  • We made a laser induced grating spectrometer(LIGS) and measured the thermal grating signal generated in a $C_3$ $H_{8}$ flame. The thermal grating was formed in the C7Ha flame with two second-harmonic Nd:YAG pulse laser beams, and an LIGS signal was generated by Bragg scattering of a probe laser beam A $r^+.laser(488 nm). We found the modulation period of the signal depends linearly on the spacing of the grating set in the flame. We determined flame temperature by fitting the modulated signal and soot concentration with signal strength. Using this technique, we also obtained temperature profile and soot-particle distribution in a $C_3$ $H_{8}$ flame .e .

  • This paper is to grasp the use of impact-echo response signal induced from impacting an object for the assessment of compressive strength of construction materials nondestructively and to propose the test results. For this study, an impact device was devised and used for impacting an object by an initial rotating free falling impact and following repetitive impacts from the rebound action which eventually disappears. Concrete test specimens which had been mixed for different strengths were tested and the impact echo response signal was measured for each test specimen. The total sound signal energy which is assessed from integrating the impact-echo response signal was compared with the directly measured compressive strength for each specimen. The comparison showed that the total sound signal energy has a direct relationship with the directly measured compressive strength and the results clearly indicated that the compressive strength of construction materials can be assessed nondestructively using total sound signal energy which is assessed from integrating the impact-echo response signal induced from impacting an object.

  • Hydrogen is in the world limelight for future energy source, and it has been already used in various industry fields including aerospace. The extremely fine molecule of the hydrogen can be easily leaked from tiny size of the crack on the surface of transporting pipes or storage tanks, and it could bring on awfully terrible disaster. In this study, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) was employed to develope a reliable detection scheme for a small quantity of hydrogen leakage. Effect of three different metal substrates (i.e. Al, Cu, SUS) on plasma generation and the intensity of the hydrogen atomic signal was investigated, and the surface damage of the substrates due to repetitive laser shots was observed using Scanning electron microscope. It was also evaluated how the surface damage could distort the atomic signal. The intensity of the atomic signal was found to be the strongest, and the signal distortion due to the surface damage was approximately $100W/m^2$ lower when Al was used for the substrate.

  • This paper is to provide the results of a pilot study of the usability and possibility of impact force response signal induced from impacting an object for the assessment of compressive strength of various materials (rock, concrete, wood, etc.) nondestructively. For this study, a device was devised for impacting an object and measuring the impact force. The impact was carried out by an initial rotating free falling impact and following repetitive impacts from the rebound action which eventually disappears. Wood and rock test specimens for different strengths were tested and an impact force response signal was measured for each test specimen. The total impact force signal energy which is assessed from integrating the impact force response signal was compared with the directly measured compressive strength for each specimen. • In our previous study, glucose deprivation was reported to induce the potentiated death and ATP loss in immunostimulated astroglia. And this vulnerability to glucose deprivation was due to overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H$_2$O$_2$). In the present study, the role of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) in the glucose deprivation-induced death of immunostimulated astroglia was examined. We showed that immunostimulation with LPS+IFN-ν activated the ERKl/2 signal pathway and produced a large amount of NO and H$_2$O$_2$. Generation of NO and H$_2$O$_2$ in immunostimulated astroglia was mediated via ERK1/2 signal pathways, since addition of the ERK kinase (MEKl) inhibitor PD98059 reduced NO and H$_2$O$_2$production. ERK1/2 activation-mediated NO and H$_2$O$_2$ production is due to an activation of iNOS and NADPH oxidase, respectively. Finally, we found that glucose deprivation caused ATP depletion and the augmented death in immunostimulated astroglia, which was also prevented by PD98059 treatment. These results demonstrate that the ERK1/2 signal pathways play an important role in glucose deprivation induced the death in immunostimulated astroglia by regulating the generation of NO and H$_2$O$_2$.

  • To quantify the LII signals from soot particle of flames in diesel engine cylinder, a new method has been proposed for correcting LII signal attenuated by soot particles between the measuring point and the detector. It has been verified by an experiment on a laminar jet ethylene-air diffusion flame. Being proportional to the attenuation, the ratio of LII signal at two different detection wavelengths can be used to correct the measured LIIsignal and obtain the unattenuated LII signal, from which the soot volume fraction in the flame can be estimated. Both the 1064-nm and frequency-doubled 532-nm beams from the Nd : YAG laser are used. Single-shot, one-dimensional(1-D) line images are recorded on the intensified CCD camera, with the rectangular-profile laser beam using 1-mm-diameter pinhole. Two broadband optical interference filters having the center wavelengths of 647 nm and 400 nm respectively and a bandwidth of 10 nm are used. This two-wavelength correction has been applied to the ethylene-air coannular laminar diffusion flame, previously studied on soot formation by the laser extinction method in this laboratory. The results by the LII measurement technique and the conventional laser extinction method at the height of 40 nm above the jet exit agreed well with each other except around outside of the peaks of soot concentration, where the soot concentration was relatively high and resulting attenuation of the LII signal was large. The radial profile shape of soot concentration was not changed a lot, but the absolute value of the soot volume fraction around outside edge changed from 4ppm to 6.5 ppm at r=2.8mm after correction. This means that the attenuation of LII signal was approximately 40% at this point, which is higher than the average attenuation rate of this flame, 10~15%.

  • The distribution of oil film thickness in piston were measured by induced fluorescence method. A Xe lamp was used as light source. Coumarine-6 was mixed with oil as the fluorescent dye. Fluorescent signal which is proportional to the oil film thickness was acquired by CCD camera and transmitted to the personal computer as video signal. In order to solve the problem of measurement system, irregular distribution and unstability of light intensity, as well as to know the relationship between the oil film thickness and output signal, three different calibration techniques were used. Motoring and firing tests were performed in a single cylinder research engine with transparent liner. By analyzing the oil film thickness converted from the photographed image, it was observed that each of three piston rings scrapes the oil both upward and downward and oil film thickness is not uniform horizontally at a given piston land. The amount of oil in each land was considerably affected by the engine load. It is thought that the blow-by gas blows the oil down to the crankcase.

  • The wind-induced vibrations of the mast arm of cantilever traffic signal structures can lead to the fatigue failure of these structures. Wind tunnel tests were conducted on an aeroelastic model of this type of structure. Results of these experiments indicated that when the signals have backplates, vortex shedding causes large-amplitude vibrations that could lead to fatigue failure. Vibrations caused by galloping were only observed for one particular angle of attack with the signals having backplates. No evidence for galloping, previously thought to be the dominant cause of fatigue failures in these structures, was observed.

  • The relationship between selenium and signal molecules is not well elucidated yet. It was found that physiological concentration of selenite, less than 3 $\mu$M, reduced ASKl activity and induced of PI3-Kinase/Akt pathways in HT1080 cells. Duration of these signal molecules by selenite was much longer than that by growth factors and other stresses. The longer duration time of these signal molecules may be important to maintain normal functions against stresses.(omitted)

  • Wind-induced vibrations of mast arms of cantilever traffic signal structures can lead to fatigue failure. Two such structures were instrumented each with a sonic anemometer and a camera that records the motions of the tip of the arm. It was observed throughout this experiment that large amplitude vertical vibrations of mast arms with signals with backplates occur for the most part at low wind speed ranges, between 2 to 7 m/s, and as the wind speed increases the amplitude of the vertical vibrations decreases. The results of these experiments contradict the generally accepted belief that vortex shedding does not cause significant vibrations of mast arms that could lead to fatigue failure, which have been attributed to galloping in the past. Two damping devices were tested with mixed results.
