The aerodynamic damping is an essential factor that can considerably affect the dynamic response of the cable-stayed bridge induced by crosswind load. However, developing an accurate and efficient aerodynamic damping model is crucial for evaluating the crosswind load-induced response on cable-stayed bridges. Therefore, this study proposes a new method for identifying aerodynamic damping of the bridge structures under crosswind load using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the particle filter (PF) algorithm. The EKF algorithm is introduced to capture the aerodynamic damping ratio. PF technique is used to select the optimal spectral representation of the noise. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed solution were investigated through full-scale vibration measurement data of the crosswind-induced on the bridge's girder. The results show that the proposed solution can generate an efficient and robust estimation. The errors between the target and extracted values are around 0.01mm and 0.003^o, respectively, for the vertical and torsional motion. The relationship between the amplitude and the aerodynamic damping ratio is linear for small reduced wind velocity and nonlinear with the increasing value of the reduced wind velocity. Finally, the results show the influence of the level of noise.
For many industrial problems originating from aerodynamic noise, noise prediction techniques, reliable and easy to apply, would be of great value to engineers and manufacturers. General algorithm is presented for the prediction of internal flow-induced noise from quick opening throttle valve in an automotive engine. This algorithm is based on the integral formula derived by using the General Green Function, Lighthill's acoustic analogy and Curle's extension of Lighthill's. Novel approach of this algorithm is that the integral formula is so arranged as to predict frequency-domain acoustic signal at any location in a duct by using unsteady flow data in space and time, which can be provided by the Computational Fluid Dynamics Techniques. This semi-analytic model is applied to the prediction of internal aerodynamic noise from a throttle valve in an automotive engine. The predicted noise levels from the throttle valve show good agreement with actual measurements. The results show that the dipole noise is dominant in this phenomena and the origin of noise sources is attributed to the anti-vortex lines formed in the down-stream from a throttle valve. This illustrative computation shows that the current method permits generalized predictions of flow noise generated by bluff bodies and turbulence in flow ducts.
Developed is a computer program for the prediction of the aero-acoustic performance characteristics such as discharge pressure, efficiency, power and noise level in the basic design step of axial flow fan. The flow field and the aerodynamic performance of fan are analyzed by using the streamline curvature computing scheme with total pressure loss and flow deviation models. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuations induced by wake vortices of fan blades and to radiate via dipole distribution. The vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by combining thin airfoil theory and the predicted flow field data. The predicted aerodynamic performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present computer program are favorably compared with the test data of actual fan. Furthermore, the present computer program is shown to be very useful in optimizing design variables of fan with high efficiency and low noise level and in analyzing their design sensitivities.
Automotive turbochargers have become common in gasoline engines as well as diesel engines. They are excellent devices to effectively increase fuel efficiency and power of the engines, but they unfortunately cause several noise problems. The noises are classified into mechanical noises induced from movement of a rotating shaft and aerodynamic noises by air flow in turbochargers. The mechanical noises are whine and howling noises, and the aerodynamic noises are BPF (blade-passing frequency), pulsation, surge, some special frequency noises. These noises are bothering passengers because their levels are higher or their frequencies are clearly separated from engine or vehicle noises. The noise investigated in this paper is a BPF noise induced by compressor wheels, whose frequency is the multiplication of the number of compressor wheel blades and its rotational speed. The noise is strongly dependent upon the geometry of wheels and the number of blades. This study tried to apply a groove close to the inlet side of compressor wheels in order to reduce the BPF noise. The groove has successfully reduced the noise of narrow band frequency of a turbocharger. It shows that the groove could reduce the wide band frequency noise, the compressor BPF noise with a best shape of the groove.
The analytical and experimental studies on aerodynamic flutter instability of rotating disks in information storage devices are investigated. The theoretical analysis uses a fluid-structure model where the aerodynamic force on the rotating disk is represented in terms of lift and damping forces. Based on the analytical approach, it is shown that the backward natural frequency of the disk is equal to that of the case without aerodynamic effect at the flutter onset speed. In post-flutter regions, the natural frequencies are larger than those in vacuum conditions without aerodynamic effect. The analytical predictions on the natural frequencies of rotating disks with/without aerodynamic effect are experimentally verified using a vacuum chamber and ASMO optical disks.
Nonlinear flow-induced vibration characteristics of a generic missile wing (or control surface) are investigated in this study. The wing model has freeplay structural nonlinearity at its pitch axis. Nonlinear aerodynamic flows with unsteady shock waves are considered in the transonic flow region. To practically consider the effects of freeplay structural nonlinearity, the fictitious mass method (FMM) is applied to structural vibration analysis based on a finite element method (FEM). A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique is used for computing the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics of all-movable wings. The aerodynamic analysis is based on the efficient transonic small-disturbance aerodynamic equations of motion using the potential-flow theory. To solve the nonlinear aeroelastic governing equations including the freeplay effect, a modal-based computational structural dynamic (CSD) analysis technique based on fictitious mass method (FMM) is used in time-domain. In addition, CSD and unsteady CFD techniques are simultaneously coupled to give accurate computational results. Various aeroelastic computations have been performed for a generic missile wing model. Linear and nonlinear aeroelastic computations have been conducted and the characteristics of flow-induced vibration are introduced.

The paper deals with the computational approach in analysis and design of pantograph panhead strips of high-speed railway in aerodynamic and aeroacoustic concerns. Pantograph is an equipment such that the electric power is supplied from catenary system to train. Due to the nature of complexity in high-speed fluid flow, turbulence and downstream vortices result in the instability in the aerodynamic contact between panhead strips and catenary system, and consequently generate the considerable levels of flow-induced sound. In this paper, based on the preceding low speed wind-tunnel test and simulations, the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics in low speed are analyzed.
Aerodynamic characteristics, such as drag and lift, play an important role in automobile design under certain speed conditions. Such characteristics are essential to design an automobile since they are directly related to automobile's performance such as passenger safety and fuel consumption. There is a huge demand for the automobile to have safe performance at high speed. Reduction in drag is also important and it could lead to the solution of air flow induced noise and dust problems. The objective of this research is to find out the aerodynamic differences between conventional side mirror and a modified one using CFD. Although drag generated around a side mirror is only about 7% of the total drag when a car runs, it is very closely related to driver's field of vision and noise generation. CFD simulation of the flowfield around a car side-view mirror was performed using a commercial code; Gambit and FLUENT.
