The purpose of this study is to build and to manage environment models with line segments from the sonar range data on obstacles in unknown and varied environments. The proposed method subsequently employs a two-stage data-transform process in order to extract environmental line segments from the range data on obstacles. In the first stage, the occupancy grid extracted from the range data is accumulated to a two-dimensional local histogram grid. In the second stage, a line histogram extracted from an local histogram gird is based on a Hough transform, and matching is a process of comparing each of the segments in the global line segments map against the line segments to detect similarity in overlap, orientation, and arrangement. Each of these tests is made by comparing one of the parameters in the segment representation. After the tests, new line segments are composed to the global line segments map. The proposed technique is illustrated by experiments in an indoor environment.

We present a simple artificial landmark model and robust landmark tracking algorithm for mobile robot localization. The landmark model, consisting of symmetric and repetitive color patches, produces color histograms that are invariant under the geometric and photometric distortions. A stochastic approach based on the CONDENSATION tracks the landmark model robustly even under the varying illumination conditions. After the landmark detection, relative position of the mobile robot to the landmark is calculated. Experimental results show that the proposed landmark model is effective and can be detected and tracked in a clustered scene robustly. With the tracked single landmark, we extract geometrical information than achieve accurate localization.
Object recognition of service robots is very important for most of services such as delivery, and errand. Conventional methods are based on the geometric models in static industrial environments, but they have limitations in indoor environments where the condition is changable and the movement of service robots occur because the interesting object can be occluded or small in the image according to their location. For solving these uncertain situations, in this paper, we propose the method that exploits observed objects as context information for predicting interesting one. For this, we propose the method for modeling domain knowledge in probabilistic frame by adopting Bayesian networks and ontology together, and creating knowledge model dynamically to extend reasoning models. We verify the performance of our method through the experiments and show the merit of inductive reasoning in the probabilistic model

Alternative radio-navigation technologies aim at providing continuous navigation solution even if one cannot use GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). In shadowing region such as indoor environment, GNSS signal is no longer available and the alternative navigation system should be used together with GNSS to provide seamless positioning. For soldiers in battlefield where GNSS signal is jammed or in street battle, the alternative navigation system should work without positioning infrastructure. Moreover, the radio-navigation system should have scalability as well as high accuracy performance. This paper presents a TWR (Two-Way-Ranging)-based cooperative positioning system (CPS) that does not require location infrastructure. It is assumed that some members of CPS can obtain GNSS-based position and they are called mobile anchors. Other members unable to receive GNSS signal compute their position using TWR measurements with mobile anchors and neighboring members. Error propagation in CPS is analytically studied in this paper. Error budget for TWR measurements is modeled first. Next, location error propagation in CPS is derived in terms of range errors. To represent the location error propagation in the CPS, Location Error Propagation Indicator (LEPI) is proposed in this paper. Simulation results show that location error of tags in CPS is mainly influenced by the number of hops from anchors to the tag to be positioned as well as the network geometry of CPS.

As mobile robot applications increase in real life, the need of low cost autonomous driving are gradually increasing. We propose a novel vision-based real-time lane detection and tracking system that supports autonomous driving of mobile robots in constrained tracks which are designed considering indoor driving conditions of mobile robots. Considering the processing of lanes with various shapes and the pre-adjustment of operation parameters, the system structure with multi-operation modes are designed. In parameter tuning mode, thresholds of the color filter is dynamically adjusted based on the geometric property of the lane thickness. And in the unstable input mode of curved tracks and the stable input mode of straight tracks, lane feature pixels are adaptively extracted based on the geometric and temporal characteristics of the lanes and the lane model is fitted using the least-squared method. The track centerline is calculated using lane models and the motion model is simplified and tracked by a linear Kalman filter. In the driving experiments, it was confirmed that even in low-performance robot configurations, real-time processing produces the accurate autonomous driving in the constrained track.

In Korea, the absence of BIM use in existing civil structures and buildings is driving a demand for as-built BIM. As-built BIMs are often created using laser scanners that provide dense 3D point cloud data. Conventional static laser scanning approaches often suffer from limitations in their operability due to the difficulties in moving the equipment, the selection of scanning location, and the requirement of placing targets or extracting tie points for registration of each scanned point cloud. This paper aims at reducing the manual effort using a kinematic 3D laser scanning system based on graph-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for continuous indoor mapping. The robotic platform carries three 2D laser scanners: the front scanner is mounted horizontally to compute the robot's trajectory and to build the SLAM graph; the other two scanners are mounted vertically to scan the profiles of surrounding environments. To reduce the accumulated error in the trajectory of the platform through loop closures, the graph-based SLAM system incorporates AdaBoost loop closure approach, which is particularly suitable for the developed multi-scanner system providing more features than the single-scanner system for training. We implemented the proposed method and evaluated it in two indoor test sites. Our experimental results show that the false positive rate was reduced by 13.6% and 7.9% for the two dataset. Finally, the 2D and 3D mapping results of the two test sites confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed graph-based SLAM.

The landmark selection is crucial to successful perform in SLAM(Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) with a mono camera. Especially, in unknown environment, automatic landmark selection is needed since there is no advance information about landmark. In this paper, proposed visual attention system which modeled human's vision system will be used in order to select landmark automatically. The edge feature is one of the most important element for attention in previous visual attention system. However, when the edge feature is used in complicated indoor area, the response of complicated area disappears, and between flat surfaces are getting higher. Also, computation cost increases occurs due to the growth of the dimensionality since it uses the responses for 4 directions. This paper suggests to use a corner feature in order to solve or prevent the problems mentioned above. Using a corner feature can also increase the accuracy of data association by concentrating on area which is more complicated and informative in indoor environments. Finally, this paper will prove that visual attention system based on corner feature can be more effective in SLAM compared to previous method by experiment.

Intelligent homes consist of ubiquitous sensors, home networks, and a context-aware computing system. These homes are expected to offer many services such as intelligent air-conditioning, lighting control, health monitoring, and home security. In order to realize these services, many researchers have worked on various research topics including smart sensors with low power consumption, home network protocols, resident and location detection, context-awareness, and scenario and service control. This paper presents the real-time metabolic rate estimation method that is based on measured heart rate for human adaptive appliance (air-conditioner, lighting etc.). This estimation results can provide valuable information to control smart appliances so that they can adjust themselves according to the status of residents. The heart rate based method has been experimentally compared with the location-based method on a test bed.
The loop closure problem is one of the most challenging issues in the vision-based simultaneous localization and mapping community. It requires the robot to recognize a previously visited place from current camera measurements. While the loop closure often relies on visual bag-of-words based on point features in the previous works, however, in this paper we propose a line-based method to solve the loop closure in the corridor environments. We used both the floor line and the anchored vanishing point as the loop closing feature, and a two-step loop closure algorithm was devised to detect a known place and perform the global pose correction. We propose an anchored vanishing point as a novel loop closure feature, as it includes position information and represents the vanishing points in bi-direction. In our system, the accumulated heading error is reduced using an observation of a previously registered anchored vanishing points firstly, and the observation of known floor lines allows for further pose correction. Experimental results show that our method is very efficient in a structured indoor environment as a suitable loop closure solution.

A door can serve as a feature for place classification and localization for navigation of a mobile robot in indoor environments. This paper proposes a door detection method based on the recognition of various door handles using the general Hough transform (GHT) and support vector machine (SVM). The contour and color histogram of a door handle extracted from the database are used in GHT and SVM, respectively. The door recognition scheme consists of four steps. The first step determines the region of interest (ROI) images defined by the color information and the environment around the door handle for stable recognition. In the second step, the door handle is recognized using the GHT method from the ROI image and the image patches are extracted from the position of the recognized door handle. In the third step, the extracted patch is classified whether it is the image patch of a door handle or not using the SVM classifier. The door position is probabilistically determined by the recognized door handle. Experimental results show that the proposed method can recognize various door handles and detect doors in a robust manner.
