The Relative Importance of Indoor and Outdoor Sources for Determining Indoor Pollution Concentrations in Homes in Seoul, South Korea

  • This study measured indoor and outdoor levels of hydrocarbon volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (collectively referred to as BTEX), as well as 13 carbonyl compounds, at 20 homes in Seoul, South Korea. Along with the sampling of BTEX and carbonyls, indoor concentrations of the air pollutants nitrogen oxide (NO) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) were also measured at each home. These measurements were used to understand the characteristics of BTEX and carbonyls by calculating the various ratios and correlation coefficients between measured contaminant levels. We found that carbonyls were mostly originated from indoor sources, while BTEX were originated from both indoor and outdoor sources. A high correlation between indoor levels of NO and BTEX indicated that traffic emissions were also an important sources of BTEX.

오염농도 분포 해석을 통한 공동주택의 자연환기성능 향상을 위한 평면계획 (Planning of Apartment Units for Improving Natural Ventilation Performance based on the Analysis of Indoor Pollutant Concentrations)

  • Before occupation of an apartment housing, the builders are required to inform the test result of IAQ to the public. However, there is no simplified method to predict IAQ before measurement of pollutant concentration. In this study, a simplified way of predicting IAQ based on the distribution of indoor pollutant concentration is proposed. 7 different cases of air change rate have been simulated through CFD analysis to get the distribution ratio of each pollutant material and then simplified functions were used with CRIAQ1 values derived from CFD simulation to evaluate by comparing the influence of each material in the indoor pollutant concentration. Again, a lot of efforts which can improve the indoor air quality have been performed. Materials used in indoor space are labeled with their pollutant emission level. Installation of ventilation system in residential buildings will be regulated by a building codes sooner or later. But it is important to understand the fact that layout of walls, location or size of openings will influence the indoor air flow and pollutant concentration. And location of emitting material influences to indoor air pollutants distribution. But until now there is few recognition and consideration of these factors. Therefore, in this paper the effects of these factors is proved and some kind of guideline is made for designers after a comparison of typical apartment floor plan and a new type plan with their average pollutant concentration and its distribution of each room. CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) program was used to show the indoor air flow and pollutant concentration distribution. For this purpose, a typical $100m^2$ apartment floor plan was chosen as a case study model and several alternatives were reviewed to improve the IAQ performance. The simulation took place in the condition of natural ventilation through windows.

사회복지시설 종사자의 실내공기질 관리에 대한 태도와 관련 요인에 관한 탐색적 연구 (An Exploratory Research on Social Workers' Attitude and Related Factors about Indoor Air Quality Management of Social Welfare Facilities)

  • 2015년에 발표된 실내공기질관리 기본계획은 민감계층을 고려하는 실내 환경보건 강화를 주요 추진 전략중 하나로 담고 있다. 사회복지생활시설은 장애인, 노인, 아동, 노숙인 등이 주 거주지로 삼으며 실내에서 머무는 시간이 매우 긴 공간이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사회복지시설은 법정 실내공기질 관리 대상 기관이 아니다. 이에 본 연구는 사회복지생활시설 종사자들을 대상으로 실내공기질에 대한 태도와 관련 요인을 조사, 분석하였다. 실내공기질 관리의 필요성에 대해서 69.5%가 찬성하였고, 사회복지시설을 실내공기질 관리 대상 기관에 포함하는 것에 대해 80.9%가 찬성하였다. 응답자 중 90.8%가 본인이 종사하고 있는 시설의 실내공기질 분석을 받을 의향이 있다고 응답하였다. 사회복지시설의 실내공기질 관리 법정 기관화 찬성과 관련 있는 요인은 환경의식이었고, 본인이 종사하고 있는 실내공기질 분석 의사와 관련 있는 요인은 실내공기질 관리법 인지도였다. 분석결과를 기초로 사회복지시설 실내공기질 관리를 위한 환경부 다중이용시설등의 실내공기질 관리법 개정, 중앙 혹은 지방 정부의 비용부담, 사회복지시설 실내 공기질 관리에 대한 교육 및 연구의 필요성을 제안하였다.

  • Indoor particulate matter(PM) is a carcinogen and needs to be removed and managed. It is generally reduced and removed through ventilation and filtration. Owing to the recent occurrence of high-concentration fine dust and yellow dust in the atmosphere, however, it is difficult to expect the purification of indoor air through the simple introduction of the outside air. For residential buildings, in particular, they are highly dependent on natural ventilation but the lack of natural ventilation is worsening because concerns over the inflow of external pollutants are increasing. Therefore, this study designed and manufactured a window ventilation system that does not require a duct to improve the maintenance and management problems of general ventilation system, and constructed indoor PM concentration change data through performance evaluation.

  • "The guidelines on the management of indoor air quality of public transportation" was enacted in December 2006 due to the fact that the interest and demand of improving the air quality for citizen using public transportation have been increased. Thus this research has considered what has influenced on the passenger cabin HVAC as well as the improvement of customer service as we proceed the study for better indoor air quality inside of the train by developing the module of cleaning air system for pollutants of a car air.

  • Management of indoor air quality of underground subway station is an important issue since the limited natural ventilation, limited sunshine incoming, and highly moistured atmosphere. The improvement in IAQ of platform is expected because most stations were installed with platform screen door currently, however, the poor air quality in tunnel might be affecting subway cabin indoor. In this study, we developed the air quality assessment model based on computational fluid dynamics. The geometry of air ventilation unit, seat, LCD monitors, and passengers were modeled using commercial software (Design Modeler) and fluid pattern and pollutants trajectories were analyzed by using CFX. We predicted the thermal comfort by predicted mean vote (PMV), distribution of CO2 and PM10 concentration. It is expected that this model can be used for the performance test of air cleaners which are under development.

The Occupant Perception and Investigation of Indoor Air Quality at Home in Seoul

  • 최근 산업장 뿐만아니라 주택에서의 실내환경오염은 대단히 중요한 관심사이다. 특히 미국 EPA에서는 성인이 하루에 약 80 % 이상을 실내 공간에서 생활하고 있는 것으로 보고하고 있으며, 이러한 생환 방식의 변화에 인한 최근 도시화 지역에서의 실내 공기질(indoor air quality)의 문제가 새로운 환경 이슈로 부각되고 있고, 일본을 비롯한 구미 각 국에서도 21세기 환경문제 중 실내환경(indoor environment) 문제를 최우선으로 다루고 있다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 주택에서의 실내공기질을 평가하기 위하여 설문지를 통하여 인식도를 조사하고 그를 토대로 6개의 다른 주거환경을 가진 주택을 대상으로 실내공기오염도를 측정하였다. 본 연구에서 평가한 측정항목은 온도, 습도, CO, $CO_2$, 호흡성분진, 포름알데히드, 총부유세균(TBC)이었으며, 주택의 지역 및 계절별로 나누어 측정하였는데, 측정결과 호흡성분진은 주택 5,6 에서 국내의 기준을 초과하였으며, 총부유세균은 흥콩과 싱가폴의 실내기준 권고치인 $500{\;}CFU/m^3$을 초과였고, HCHO는 모든 대상 주택에서 초과하였다. 또한 통계적으로 분석한 결과 주택의 건축년도와 CO, TBC가 0.01 수준에서 유의성 관계를 나타냈으며, 습도는0.05 수준에서 유의성을 나타냈다. 또한 주택의 거주자 500인을 대상으로 조사한 설문지 결과에서는 대부분 응답자가 실내공기오염에 대하여 인식하고있으며, 실내오염으로 인해 피로>두통>눈 아픔>기침 등을 호소하고 있으며, 실내공기정화장치가 필요하다고 응답하였다. 결론적으로 본 연구의 목적은 주택에서의 실내공기질을 평가하여 실내공기질의 중요성을 인식시키고, 그에 대한 구체적인 대책방안을 제시하여 관련 기준을 준비하는데 기초적인 자료를 마련하고 주민들이 쾌적한 삶을 유지하는데 기여하고자 한다.

유치원 여교사(女敎師)와 전업주부(主婦)의 이산화질소 노출비교 및 평가 (Comparative Study on Nitrogen Dioxide Exposure of Female Teachers from Kindergarten and House Wives)

  • Since most people spend over 80% of their time indoor, indoor air quality tends to be the dominant contributor to personal exposure. In this study, indoor and outdoor $NO_2$concentrations were measured and compared with simultaneously personal exposures of 27 house-wives and female workers of kindergarten. Time activity pattern and house characteristics were used to determine the effects of these factors on personal exposure. Since house-wives student spent most their times in indoor with mean of 89.8%, their $NO_2$ exposure was associated with indoor $NO_2$ level(r= 0.92) rather than outdoor $NO_2$ level(r= 0.87). female workers were also associated with indoor $NO_2$ level(r= 0.70) though sample number were small. Using time-weighted average model, $NO_2$ exposures of house-wives were estimated by $NO_2$ measurements in indoor home and outdoor home levels. Estimated $NO_2$ personal exposures were significantly correlated with measured $NO_2$ personal exposures (r= 0.90). These results might mean that air pollutants exposure of old and feeble persons, and infants could be estimated by measuring concentrations of indoor home.

바닥재로부터 방출되는 휘발성유기화합물과 폼알데하이드 특성 (Characteristics of VOCs and Formaldehyde Emitted from Floorings)

  • Since the seventies and the oil crisis, energy-saving measures have led to a reduction in the ventilation of room. The use of synthetic materials which emit various chemical substances had led to an increase in the concentration of indoor pollutants. "Sick building syndrome (SBS)" and "Sick house syndrome (SHS)" are worldwide problems. Also, the number of complaints about indoor air pollution caused by VOCs (Volatile organic compound) and HCHO (Formaldehyde) has increased. It is important that evaluating and understanding emission of indoor air pollutant from building materials. The object of this study was to evaluate emission test method for flooring such as wood based flooring, carpet tile, rubber tile, PVC sheet and tile, and to determine emission of TVOC and form-aldehyde. The quantity of TVOC and carbonyl compounds emission were sampled and measured by Tenax TA and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MSD), 2,4-DNPH cartrige with ozone scrubber and high performance liquid from flooring. The TVOC concentration emitted from carpet tile was ($7.419\;mg/m^2 h$) the highest among 5 groups of test materials. In wood based flooring and PVC tile, the emitted concentration of toluene was high. And the dodecane emission was highest in carpet. The concentration of TVOC decreased by an increase in emission test period. After 7 days, the concentration of TVOC from floorings were about 50% below of the concentration at the first day. TVOC emission from wood based flooring, carpet tile, rubber tile, PVC sheet and tile were decreased in 28 days and remained steady after about 15 days. The concentration of formaldehyde emission from floorings showed extremely low.

A Study on the Improvement of Comfortable Living Environment by Using real-time Sensors

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify indoor air quality in various living spaces using sensors that can measure noise, vibration, fine dust, and odor in real time and to propose optimal indoor air quality maintenance management using Internet of Things(IoT). Research design, data and methodology: Using real-time sensors to monitor physical factors and environmental air pollutants that affect the comfort of the residential environment, Noise, Vibration, Atmospheric Pressure, Blue Light, Formaldehyde, Hydrogen Sulfide, Illumination, Temperature, Ozone, PM10, Aldehyde, Amine, LVOCs and TVOCs were measured. It were measured every 1 seconds from 4 offices and 4 stores on a small scale from November 2018 to January 2019. Results: The difference between illuminance and blue light for each measuring point was found to depend on lighting time, and the ratio of blue light in total illumination was 0.358 ~ 0.393. Formaldehyde and hydrogen sulphide were found to be higher than those that temporarily attract people in an indoor office space that is constantly active, requiring office air ventilation. The noise was found to be 50dB higher than the office WHO recommendation noise level of 35 ~ 40dB. The most important factors for indoor environmental quality were temperature> humidity> illumination> blue light in turn. Conclusions: Various factors that determine the comfort of indoor living space can be measured with real-time sensors. Further, it is judged that the use of IoT can help maintain indoor air quality comfortably.
