Signalized intersection analysis using lane groups often generalizes distinct characteristics of individual lanes. An individual lane level analysis procedure is proposed. The method can assess individual lane LOS without additional data collection efforts. Analysis results of the proposed method were compared with the current HCM analysis results and outputs of aaSIDRA, which can calculate intersection performance lane-by-lane. The results showed individual lane analysis mostly produces similar results with HCM and aaSIDRA. However, lane analysis results for permitted left lanes showed some differences with aaSIRDRA due to the different method of assessing saturation flow rate of the permitted left turn movement. It is expected that the proposed method could complement the weaknesses of current HCM signalized intersection analysis.
PURPOSES : This study analyzed the lane-by-lane traffic flow characteristics in Korea by using real-world data, including congestion levels, for 2-, 3-, and 4-lane freeways. METHODS : On the basis of a literature review, lane flow and speed characteristics were analyzed using flow measurements and speed ratios. In addition, the effect of congestion levels on traffic flow were visualized using rescaled cumulative plots. RESULTS : Driver behavior varied depending on the congestion level. During free-flow conditions, the lane-use ratio of individual lanes varied largely, whereas during congestion, the ratio was nearly the same for all lanes (i.e., equilibrium). During maximum-flow and congestion conditions, the median lane was used more than the shoulder lane, whereas during all other conditions, the shoulder lane had a higher lane-use ratio. In 3- or 4-lane freeways, the lane-use ratio of the median lane always exceeded 1 and was the highest during free-flow conditions. CONCLUSIONS : The results of the present analysis can be used as an index to predict congestion before a lane is overcapacitated. Moreover, the results can be applied in variable lane guidance systems, such as car navigation systems and variable message displays, to control traffic flow.
The lane-change behavior usually consists of discretionary lane-change and mandatory lane-change types. For the first type, drivers change lanes selectively to maintain their own driving condition and the second type is the case that the drivers must change the current lane, which can occur in recurrent congestion sections like merging and weaving sections. The mandatory lane-change behavior have a great effect on the operation condition of freeway. In this paper, we first generate data such as traffic volumes, speeds, densities, and the number of lane-change within the merging and weaving sections using the data of individual vehicle collected from time-lapse aerial photography. And then, the data is divided into the stable and congested flow by analyzing the speed variation pattern of individual vehicles. In addition, the number of lane-changing from ramp to mainline within every 30-meter interval is investigated before and after traffic congestion at study sites and the distribution of lane-changing at each 30-meter point is analyzed to identify the variation of lane-changing ratio depending on the stable and congested flows. To recognize the effect of mainline flow influenced by ramp flow, this study also analyzes the characteristics of the lane-changing distributions within the lanes of mainline. The purpose of this paper is to present the basic theory to be used in developing a lane-changing model at the merging and weaving sections on freeways.
PURPOSES : This study aims to analyze how the installation of advanced warning devices affects individual drivers' driving behaviors with operating record data collected from 100 vehicles. METHODS : With collected data, the changes in individual drivers' driving behaviors, such as Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW), were investigated with respect to the cumulative distance traveled and driving time. For the analysis, operating record data collected from 100 vehicles for seven months were used. RESULTS : The results showed that individual drivers' driving behaviors could be categorized into six different types. In addition, most of the drivers showed unstable warning patterns in the initial stage after installation of an advanced warning device. Approximately 40% of vehicles equipped with advanced warning systems were found to have positive effects, indicating that the frequencies of both FCW and LDW had been continuously decreasing after installation of the system. CONCLUSIONS : The warning device might be helpful for making drivers' driving behaviors safer. Driving behaviors during the initial stage of the system installation, which might be regarded as an adaptation phase, were found to be very unstable compared with normal situations, indicating that adequate education and training should be provided to all the drivers to prevent operator disruption at the initial installation of the system.

The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of the shoulder-use lane, which is a representative traffic management technique that increases the road capacity. The operation of the shoulder-use lane has been actively used as a countermeasure to improve traffic congestion, because it has the effect of improving traffic flow during rush hour. In Korea, the shoulder-use lanes are available at Gyeongbu, Yeongdong, and on the Seoul Outer Ring expressway, and their use is gradually increasing. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis was conducted to analyze the effects of the shoulder-use lane; including 1) analysis of individual shoulder lanes based on a time space diagram, and 2) analysis of shoulder lanes by road axis. These findings can contribute to the efficient installation and operation of shoulder-use lanes on expressways.

At the initial design stage of a new vehicle, the chassis layout has the most important influence on the overall vehicle performance. Most chassis designers have achieved the target performances by trial and error method as well as individual knowhow. Accordingly, a general procedure for determining the optimum location of suspension hard points with respect to the kinematic characteristics needs to be developed. In this paper, a method to optimize the toe angle in the double wishbone type front suspension of the four-wheel-drive vehicle is presented using the design of experiment, multibody dynamic simulation, and optimum design program. The handling performances of two full vehicle models having the initial and optimized toe angle are compared through the single lane change simulation. The sensitive design variables with respect to the kinematic characteristics are selected through the experimental design sensitivity analysis using the perturbation method. An object function is defined in terms of the toe angle among those kinematic characteristics. By the design of experiment and regression analysis, the regression model function of toe angle is obtained. The design variables which make the toe angle optimized ae extracted using the optimum design program DOT. The single lane change simulation and test of the full vehicle model are carried out to survey the handling performances of vehicle with toe angle optimized. The results of the single lane change simulation show that the optimized vehicle has the more improved understeer tendency than the initial vehicle.
The purpose of this paper is to perform a basic study on the interaction between lanes, which can be achieved through analyzing traffic breakdown at the microscopic level. Using aerial photographic data for the microscopic analysis, this study analyzed the characteristics of traffic flow at a merging area. This research produced aggregated traffic data such as flows, speeds, and densities in 30 second intervals by lane for the macroscopic analysis and individual headway data by lane for the microscopic analysis. The paper contains an analysis of lane characteristics through flows, speeds, densities, and headway variations and also investigates the influence of ramp flows on mainline flows with space-time diagrams. Firstly, the merging area in this study is divided into three sections: before-merging, during-merging, and after-merging. The transition process was analyzed at each lane. Secondly, the breakdown was observed in detail with data divided in 50-foot units. The breakdown was checked through the relationships between ramp and freeway mainline flows, various techniques were proposed to analyze the breakdown, and the formation of breakdown was introduced as three stages in this study. In the near future, the findings of this study could contribute to determining the dynamic capacity on freeways by easily understanding changeable traffic breakdown patterns over time and space.

PCE(Passenger Car Equivalents) is used to analysis of road capacity and LOS(Level of Service). In this study calculates PCE by number of lane and 12 vehicle type by MOLIT(Minister of Land, Infra Structure and Transport) using individual vehicle data. The results of the calculation, PCEs are increased when high vehicle classification level, many number of lanes and weekend. Heavy vehicle factors are smaller than KHCM on 4, 6 lane. Also, In this study estimates of PCE variation model by heavy vehicle percentage. Impact of Heavy vehicles on PCEs is the most sensitive on 2 lane. The results of the study, heavy vehicles low impact on PCE on multi-lane and business trips are a little in weekend.
Interest in freeway truck traffic has increased largely due to greater safety concerns regarding truck-related crashes. The negative interactions between slow-moving trucks and other vehicles are a primary cause of hazardous conditions, which lead to crashes with larger speed variations. To improve operational efficiency and safety, providing a climbing lane that separates slow-moving trucks from higher performance vehicles is frequently considered when upgrading geometrics. This study developed an operations strategy for freeway climbing lanes based on traffic conditions in real time. To consider traffic safety when designing a dynamic strategy to determine whether a climbing lane is closed or open, various factors, including the level of service (LOS) and the percentage of trucks, are investigated through microscopic simulations. A microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM, was used to simulate freeway traffic streams and collect vehicle-maneuvering data. Additionally, an external application program interface, VISSIM's COM-interface, was used to implement the proposed climbing lane operations strategies. Surrogate safety measures (SSM), including the frequency of rear-end conflicts and, were used to quantitatively evaluate the traffic safety using an analysis of individual vehicle trajectories obtained from VISSIM simulations with various operations scenarios. It is expected that the proposed algorithm can be the backbone for operating the climbing lane in real time for safer traffic management.

In the present highway design guidelines suggest that the capacity of one-lane hi-pass lanes is 2,000 veh/h for mainline toll plaza and 1,700 veh/h for interchange toll plaza. However, in a study conducted in early 2010, capacity of the mainline toll plaza was presented with 1,476 veh/h/ln to 1,665 veh/h/ln, and capacity of the interchange toll plaza was presented as 1,443 veh/h/ln. Accordingly, this study examined the feasibility of the capacity of the currently proposed highway one-lane hi-pass lane. Based on the 2021 individual vehicle passing data collected from the one-lane hi-pass gantry, the speed-traffic volume relationship graph and headway were used to calculate and compare capacity. In addition, the bootstrapping technique was introduced to utilize the headway and new processing methods for collected data were reviewed. As a result of the analysis, the one-lane hi-pass capacity could be estimated at 1,700 veh/h/ln for the interchange toll plaza, and at least 1,700 veh/h/ln for the mainline toll plaza. In addition, by using the bootstrap technique when using headway data, it was possible to present an estimated capacity similar to the observed capacity.
