For the purpose of breeding a high-yield superior variety of Korean raisin tree (Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai), whose value as an edible and medicinal resource is increasing, tree candidates for superior individuals were selected from its 11 habitats in Korea from 1996 to 1998. A clone bank preserve was created in 1998 with 70 clones proliferated by grafting; the fruition traits (e.g., the number of fructified laterals, the average number of bunches per fructified lateral, the average number of bunches per fruiting lateral, the fruitpetiole weight per individual, and the yield per individual) of 47 clones that had bloomed and borne fruit were investigated and analyzed in 2002; five upper-ranking clones whose yield per individual exhibited a 261% improvement against the total average were picked in 2005; and three clones, including 'Poong-Sung 1', that showed a difference in their fruit petiole ripening stage, were finally selected in 2007 as high-yield new cultivars of Korean raisin tree.
The theory of creative class has shown that the creative people are the key factor of success in regional economic growth. The creative people strengthen the economic competitiveness which is crucial to attract, cultivate and mobilize the resources of that region. In order to examine the theory of creative class for regional economic growth and firm productivity in Korea, this study uses the panel data of 492 Korean firms of the industrial complex producing electic and electronic manufactured goods. They are grouped into 10 industrial complexes among 16 metropolitan areas. Our findings demonstrate that creative class and 3Ts are related to the ratio of creative population density and the regional economic growth. Specifically the creative core class is of more significance to the regional economic growth than the creative professional class or the creative artist class. In our findings the panel analysis of random effects model shows that the talent index of 3Ts as well as the regional climates arc related to the individual firm's total factor productivity. This also reflects a conglomeration of the other regional climates statistically. On the other hand, the research and development expenditure of individual firms shows positive influence for each second consecutive year for the total factor productivity. Sales volume also contributes to the total factor productivity. In conclusion, we recommend that it is important to upgrade the level of creative climates by attracting the creative minds and R&D investment of the enterprises for regional economic growth and firm's total factor productivity.

In the construction industry, a great deal of research has been focused on productivity improvement because a minor change in labor productivity can often make the difference between a profit and a loss. This study shows how productivity measurement methods can be applied in practice, step by step, to analyze and identify potential problems both in productivity and methods performance for masonry work. A work sampling technique was conducted to determine the nature and extent of an observable activity as an aid to measuring overall performance. Also, a method productivity delay model was used to identify non-productivity in individual cycle times. From the work sampling technique, it was found that the masonry crew had a Labor Utilization Factor of 47.1%, and from the videotape analysis, it was found that the material and dumpster location need to be adjusted to reduce the travelling distance. We have found that efforts to improve the productivity of masonry work should be focused almost exclusively on machine and labor delays, based on the result from the method productivity delay model.

An increasing number of hospitals are seeking for new or mixed compensation strategies to improve the productivity of their medical staff in the struggle to provide high quality medical services at low costs amid the economic hardship. To motivate physicians toward the right direction, it is necessary to effectively evaluate their performance that provides a basis for compensation. However, productivity has been historically difficult to measure, particularly for physicians in academic medical centers who are expected to engage in research, education, and patient care simultaneously. The objectives of this study were to define performance measures of physicians and clinical departments in academic medical centers. to examine correlations between the measures. and to investigate factors affecting the measures. The performance data of 212 faculty physicians in 17 clinical departments in two university teaching hospitals affiliated to one medical school during the fiscal year 1994 was used for analyses. Patient care revenue, net profit. and adjusted number of patients were defined to measure the performance in patient care. and number of articles published in academic journals and research grant were defined for research activities. Both individual physicians' performance measures and per physician measures of clinical departments were analyzed. All measures defined to evaluate individual physicians' performance were positively related to each other. Clinical department and rank of faculty position were statistically significant predictors of revenue. and hospital. clinical department. and rank were significant predictors of net profit. journal publication. and research grant. Patient care measures defined to evaluate clinical departments were related to each other. so were research measures. and no significant correlations were found between patient care measures and research measures. Also found were large differences in department. ranks when clinical departments were evaluated by absolute per physician performance measures and evaluated by annual rate of changes in performance measures. These findings suggest that departmental performance measures opposed to individual performance measures are relatively free from problems of factors affecting the performance measures that are not in control of clinical departments or individual physicians. Results from the correlation analysis of departmental performance measures indicates that measures of research performance should be included in the evaluation to promote research activities in academic medical centers.
An analysis has been performed to estimate the additional number of workers and the additional collective dose in man-cSv which would be required, nuclear industry-wide as a result of reducing individual dose limit. This analysis can be extended to the reduction in the dose limits recommended by ICRP Publ.60 and BEIR V report as well as the proposed dose limits by regulatory authorities. An industry-wide database was employed in the analysis based on a summary of industry-wide occupational radiation exposure compiled by the Korea Radioisotope Association. Correlation model was employed to compute the affects of setting specific annual individual dose limits. In this study, we have addressed worker non-productivity while in the radiation environment on a parametric or 'sensitivity analysis' basis. This alleviates the need for developing such data underlying a summation of many individual tasks at many nuclear facilities. It has the advantage that very low non-productivity assumptions can readily be defended as conservative, in that it is difficult to approach such low worker non-productivity factors even in the best of environments in any industry. On a per facility basis, for calendar year 1997, the number of workers required would be increased from 231 workers to 269 workers and collective man-cSv dose would be also increased by approximately fourteen percent if the individual dose limit was reduced to 2 cSv/y and an individual worker non-productivity fraction of 0.1 is assumed.
The production of Korean offshore fisheries has been gradually decreasing due to the severe depletion of offshore fisheries resources caused by excessive fishing efforts. The production of the offshore fisheries in 2016 was the lowest since 1975. So the federal and local governments in Korea adopted and implemented various fisheries management plans and policies in order to restore fisheries resources. However, these plans and polices have not been successful in re-establishing fisheries resources. Thus, in order to accurately diagnose the situation with regard to offshore fisheries, this study sought to estimate not only the return to scale by fishing gear of offshore fisheries, but marginal productivity of individual fishing gear based on production factors derived from offshore fisheries production functions. The study was organized in the following manner. First of all, this study estimates production functions of offshore fisheries. The Cobb-Douglas and the translog production functions are adopted as offshore fisheries production functions. Specifically, the functions are estimated by crew, vessels, and offshore resource as production factors. The offshore resource is estimated by the Clarke Yoshimoto Pooley model based on the surplus production model. Secondly, the fisheries production functions are extended to the fixed-effect model and the random-effect model with panel data. Thirdly, this study analyzes the return to scale of offshore fisheries and the marginal productivity of the production factors from the estimated offshore fisheries production function. In conclusion, this study suggests plans and countermeasures for productivity improvement by group (labor intensive or technology intensive) based on the characteristics of individual offshore fishing gear.
Following two pioneering works, Medoff and Abraham(QJE 1980; JHR 1981) and Flabbi and Ichino(LE 2001) which use performance rating of personnel data as individual worker's productivity, this study replicates their analysis using a Korean large firm's personnel data(2000, male white collar workers). According to their methods through Mincerian earnings function, and multinomial logit model that links the distribution of wages and performance ratings, we find that seniority wages appeare continuously even if individual worker's productivity is controlled. Therefore we conclude that incentive or deferred compensation theory is more suitable than human capital theory.

The notion of productivity has been extended from the quantitative change of input factors to the efficiency change meaning efficient use of resources, and to the technical change meaning the qualitative improvement of input resources. In this way, the technical change is termed as total factor productivity in the individual businesses or the manufacturing industries. They should efficiently respond to the variations of economic environment and at the same time, have to make the efforts to improve productivity by increasing managerial efficiency and rasing the level of technology change for the continuous growth. Considering the growing importance of productivity, this study closely examines the factors influctuation on the productivity, fluctuation using total factor productivity in korean manufacturing industries. For the objective this study investigates the methods of measurement about total factor productivity, establishes the hypotheses based on the preceding research and finding. The results are obtained through the examination on the outcoms of regression analysis and related data. The results can be summarized as follows, First, in the progress of korean industrialization, the qualitative growth does not depend on the total factor productivity of the technical advance, and does not lead to the industry expansion. That is, the contribution of total factor productivity turns out to be relatively low. Second, it is necessary for the manufacturing industry to improve the level of technology and to emphasize the innovation of business, since the capital investment does not completely become fixed in the growth rate of productivity. Finally, continuous R&D investment should be made to increase total factor productivity. Namely, the regulation of industrial structure with an intensive technical development is essential and should be based on scientific and technical knowledge.
