Effects of Temperature and Dormancy Breaking on Germination of Newly Developed Rice Varieties (온도 및 휴면타파가 수도신품종의 발아에 미치는 영향)

  • Germination ability of a japonica and 15 indica$\times$japonica varieties was tested at day/night tempuratures of 25/2$0^{\circ}C$ and 12/12$^{\circ}C$. Germination ability of a japonica variety, "Jinheung" and two indican$\times$japonica varieties. Studies on the Effect of Temperature During the Reduction Division and the Grain Filling Stage in Rice Plants II. Effect of Air Temperature at the Grain Filling Stage in Indica-Japonica Crosses (수도의 감수분열기 및 등숙기에 있어서 온도반응에 관한 연구 제2보 수도 Indica$\times$Japonica 품종의 등숙기에 있어서의 온도반응)

  • The effects of air temperature on the grain filling stage of indica-japonica crosses were studied in artificial temperature-controlled cabinets, using Indica-Japonica crosses (Suweon 264, Suweon 258 and Milyang 29), Indica IR 36 and Lengkwang) and a Japonica rice (Jinheung). The optimum temperature to achieve maximum grain weight during the grain-filling stage was $26/18^{\circ}C$ for all varieties. Within the temperature range of 13 to $28^{\circ}C$, the grain filling period was shorter as the temperature was increased. At the highest temperature $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ the upper-position grains ("special spikelets") of IR 36 required 13days after flowering to reach the maximum weight, in Jinheung 23 days, in indica-japonica varieties (Suweon 264, Suweon 258, and MiIyang 29) 18 days, and in Lengkwang, 23 days. In the case of Lengkwang, at $32/24, \;29/21^{\circ}C$ and $26/18^{\circ}C$temperature range the upper-position grain also required same 23 days after flowering to reach the maximum weight. At the lowest temperature range of $17/9^{\circ}C$, Jinheung required 68 days and Lengkwang 53 days after flowering to reach maximum grain weight. The whole panicle took 10 to 15 days later than the special spikelets to reach the maximum weight. At lower-than-optimum temperature range $(l7/9^{\circ}C\;and\;20/12^{\circ}C)$, all IR 36 plant died within 15 days after flowering. In the case of indica-japonica varieties all plants died within 15 days only at $17/9^{\circ}C$. There were more chalky grains when the temperature was higher and lower than optimum. The highest and lowest temperature range produced dead rice (black and dark red rice). Lower than optimum temperature ranges $(17/9^{\circ}C\;and\;20/12^{\circ}C)$ affected grain quality (length, width and depth) at these temperature ranges, grains were shorter, narrower, and thinner than grains at the optimum temperature of $26/18^{\circ}C$. With regared and the effects of temperature on frequency of grain weight at grain filling stage of indica variety IR 36, the highest $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ and lowest $(23/15^{\circ}C)$ temperature ranges matched the frequency of grain weight curves. In Japonica variety Jinheung, at the three temperature ranges, that is, lowest $(17/9^{\circ}C)$ highest $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ and optimum $(26/18^{\circ}C)$, the frequency of grain weight curve showed very different patterns, In the case of indica-japonica variety Suweon 258, the frequency of grain weight curve was midway between that of IR 36 and Jinheung.   • In order to test cold tolerance of rice plants 16 varieties were treated at day/night temperature of 10/5$^{\circ}C$ at the 2nd, 4th, and 6th leaf stages. Indica$\times$japonica varieties were more sensitive to low temperature than a japonica variety. Among indica$\times$japonica varieties, "Tongil", "Suweon #251", and "Suweon #277" were less sensitive to low temperature compared to other indica$\times$japonica varieties tested. The 4th leaf stage was more sensitive to low temperature than 2nd and 6th leaf stages. than 2nd and 6th leaf stages.

  • The mechanical and rheological properties of agricultural materials are important for engineering design and analysis of their mechanical harvesting, handling, transporting and processing systems. Agricultural materials, which composed of structural members and fluids do not react in a purely elastic manner, and their response when subjected to stress and strain is a combination of elastic and viscous behavior so called viscoelastic behavior. Many researchers have conducted studies on the mechanical and rheological properties of the various agricultural products, but a few researcher has studied those properties of rice plant, and also those data are available only for foreign varieties of rice plant. This study are conducted to experimentally determine the mechanical and the rheological properties such as axial compressive strength, tensile strength, bending and shear strength, stress relaxation and creep behavior of rice stems, and grain detachment strength. The rheological models for the rice stem were developed from the test data. The shearing characteristics were examined at some different levels of portion, cross-sectional area, moisture content of rice stem and shearing angle. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows 1. The mechanical properties of the stems of the J aponica types were greater than those of the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid in compression, tension, bendingand shearing. 2. The mean value of the compressive force was 80.5 N in the Japonica types and 55.5 N in the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid which was about 70 percent to that of the Japonica types, and then the value increased progressively at the lower portion of the stems generally. 3. The average tensile force was about 226.6 N in the Japonica types and 123.6 N in the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid which was about 55 percent to that of the Japonica types. 4. The bending moment was $0.19N{\cdot}m$ in the Japonica types and $0.13N{\cdot}m$ in the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid which was 68 percent to that of the Japonica types and the bending strength was 7.7 MPa in the Japonica types and 6.5 MPa in the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid respectively. 5. The shearing force was 141.1 N in Jinju, the Japonica type and 101.4 N in Taebaeg, the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid which was 72 percent to that of Jinju, and the shearing strength of Taebaeg was 63 percent to that of Jinju. 6. The shearing force and the shearing energy along the stem portion in Jinju increased progressively together at the lower portions, meanwhile in Taebaeg the shearing force showed the maximum value at the intermediate portion and the shearing energy was the greatest at the portion of 21 cm from the ground level, and also the shearing strength and the shearing energy per unit cross-sectional area of the stem were the greater values at the intermediate portion than at any other portions. 7. The shearing force and the shearing energy increased with increase of the cross-sectional area of the rice stem and with decrease of the shearing angie from $90^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$. 8. The shearing forces showed the minimum values of 110 N at Jinju and of 60 N at Taebaeg, the shearing energy at the moisture content decreased about 15 percent point from initial moisture content showed value of 50 mJ in Jinju and of 30 mJ in Taebaeg, respectively. 9. The stress relaxation behavior could be described by the generalized Maxwell model and also the compression creep behavior by Burger's model, respectively in the rice stem. 10. With increase of loading rate, the stress relaxation intensity increased, meanwhile the relaxation time and residual stress decreased. 11. In the compression creep test, the logarithmic creep occured at the stress less than 2.0 MPa and the steady-state creep at the stress larger than 2.0 MPa. 12. The stress level had not a significant effect on the relaxation time, while the relaxation intensity and residual stress increased with increase of the stress level. 13. In the compression creep test of the rice stem, the instantaneous elastic modulus of Burger's model showed the range of 60 to 80 MPa and the viscosities of the free dashpot were very large numerical value which was well explained that the rice stem was viscoelastic material. 14. The tensile detachment forces were about 1.7 to 2.3 N in the Japonica types while about 1.0 to 1.3 N in Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid corresponding to 58 percent of Japonica types, and the bending detachment forces were about 0.6 to 1.1 N corresponding to 30 to 50 percent of the tensile detachment forces, and the bending detachment of the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid was 0.1 to 0.3 N which was 7 to 21 percent of Japonica types. 15. The detachment force of the lower portion was little bigger than that of the upper portion in a penicle and was not significantly affected by the harvesting period from September 28 to October 20. 16. The tensile and bending detachment forces decreased with decrease of the moisture content from 23 to 13 percent (w.b.) by the natural drying, and the decreasing rate of detachment forces along the moisture content was the greater in the bending detachment force than the tensile detachment force.

Effect of Seeding Seasons on the Ecological Variation of Heading Date of Indica × Japonica Rice Varieties/Pedigrees (파종기이동(播種期移動)이 Indica친수도품종(親水稻品種)/계통(系統)의 출수기(出穗期)의 생태적(生態的) 변이(變異)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This experiment was carried out to obtain some imformations about the ecological variations of the heading time of the newly breeded Indica x Japonica varieties/pedigrees according to the seasonal changes of the seeding date. day length and temperature. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1) At all varieties. days to heading showed a straight reduction according as the seeding time was delayed. 2) At the group of Japonica varieties. the days to heading of early maturing varieties were much shortened and that of medium or late maturing varieties were little or not shortened under high temperature condition but at the group of Indica ${\times}$ Japonica va rieties/pedigrees. days to heading were significantly elongated under high temerature condition. 3) At the group of Japonica varieties. the effect of the short day condition on the days to heading was significantly high at the medium and the late maturing varieties than at the early maturing varieties. however. the short day effect on the reduction of days to heading was not related with the earlyness of each varieties at the group of Indica ${\times}$ Japonica varieties/pedigrees. 4) Days to heading of all varieties under the high temperature condition were longer than that under the ordinary culture. On the other hand, the days to heading of Japonica varieties under the short day treatment were shorter than the days to heading of ordinary culture but at the group of Indica x Japonica varieties/pedigrees. the days to heading under the short day treatment were longer than ordinary culture. 5) At both varieties groups. the days to heading at each seeding time were significantly correlated with days to heading at ordinary cultivation. fl) At the group of Japonica varieties. relatively high correlation(p=0.1) was recognized between the days to heading by delay of seeding time, but at the group of Indica ${\times}$ Japonicava rieties/pedigrees, correlation between the ordinary heading date and the shortening rate of days to heading was very low.

  • A field study was conducted at Miryang in 2011 to evaluate differential sensitivity of six rice cultivars, three Indica${\times}$Japonica rice (long grain, cv. Hanareumbyeo, Hanareum2, Dasanbyeo) and three Japonica rice (short grain, Nampyung, Ilpumbyeo and Junamjosaeng) cultivars, to benzobicyclon, mesotrione+pretilachlor (MP) and butachlor (control) in transplanting rice and their treatment influences on rice yield. All Indica${\times}$Japonica rice cultivars exhibited susceptible to both benzobicyclon and MP as reflected by higher visual injury and carotenoid biosynthesis inhibition when compared with Japonica rice cutlivars. The percentage of foliar chlorosis of Indica${\times}$Japonica rice was only 0.9~4.7% for benzobicyclon at 13 days after treatment (DAT) and 30.3~64.4% for MP at 5DAT but it increased rapidly to 88.4~91.2% at 12~20DAT. However, most of the Japonica cultivars are tolerant to bezobicyclon and MP. There was no visible leaf chlorosis but carotenoid biosynthesis was slightly inhibited. Based on relative carotenoid content reduction of benzobicyclon and MP to butachlor, the Indica${\times}$Japonica rice showed 4.6~15.6 fold higher compared with the Japonica rice. The heading date of the injured rice plant was delayed by 3 days and panicle number per square meter and ripened grain ratio were reduced as compared with the control treatment of butachlor. Rice yield of the Indica${\times}$Japonica rice cultivars treated with benzobicyclon and MP was reduced by 7~10%, 3~5%. respectively. The result indicates that rice cultivars vary in tolerance to HPPD-Inhibiting herbicides and Indica${\times}$Japonica rices were more susceptible than the Japonica rices to MP and benzobicyclon. Rice yield of the Indica${\times}$Japonica rices was also significantly reduced by the those herbicide treatments.

Studies on Low Temperature Injury at each Growth Stage in Rice Plant (수도 생육과정별 저온장해에 관한 연구)

  • To abtain basic information in process developing cold tolerance rice variety, used 8 varieties which are the close crossing and the remote crossing in order to clarify how is being the differences of low temperature injury in same variety and the varietal difference at each growth stage under the low temperature treatment, 18$^{\circ}C$-12$^{\circ}C$ (day-night), and to establish the effective testing method for low temperature injury in rice plant. In this experiment, the varietal ifferences of low temperature injury were significant in rice plant, and found out that low temperature injury at the each growth stage from sowing to heading in same variety was not horizontal.

Identification of Heterosis QTLs for Yield and Yield-Related Traits in Indica-Japonica Recombinant Inbred Lines of Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

  • Supplying sufficient rice to growing populations is a global challenge. Hybrid indica rice varieties exploiting heterosis have increased yields, but inter-subspecific crosses between indica and japonica varieties are hampered by sterility. Examination and genetic understanding of yield heterosis in indica/japonica crosses addressing yield barriers are basic requirements. In this study, QTLs for heterosis of yield traits were identified in indica-japonica recombinant inbred lines (RILs) using a total of 178 RILs originating from Dasanbyeo (indica) ${\times}$ TR22183 (japonica) (DT-RILs) and their backcrossed populations. Nine of sixty-six major quantitative trait loci (QTLs) identified in DT-RILs exhibited heterosis. Heterosis QTLs clustered with other traits on chromosomes 1, 4, and 8, and clusters were conserved between different RILs. The clusters contained several known yield enhancement genes/QTLs. Specific heterotic allele combinations contributed to four major heterosis QTLs, particularly for panicle and spikelet number traits. Heterosis for yield and yield-related traits was explained by the harmonized effects of overdominance, dominance, and epistatic interactions in inter-subspecific breeding populations.
