One of the fascinating prospects is the possibility of new hydrodynamics technology on micro-scale system since oscillations of micro-droplets are of practical and scientific importance. It has been widely conceived that the lowest oscillation mode of a pendant droplet is the longitudinal vibration, i.e. periodic elongation and contraction along the longitudinal direction. Nonlinear and forced oscillations of supported viscous droplet were focused in the present study. The droplet has a free contact line with solid plate and inviscid fluid. Natural frequencies of a pendant droplet have been investigated experimentally by imposing the acoustic wave while the frequency is being increased at a fixed amplitude. It is found that a pendant droplet shows the resonant behaviors at each mode similar to the theoretical analysis. The rotation of the droplet about the longitudinal axis is the oscillation mode of the lowest resonance frequency. This rotational mode can be invoked by periodic acoustic forcing and is analogous to the pendulum rotation. It is also found that the natural frequency of a pendant droplet is independent of the drop density and surface tension but inversely proportional to the square root of the droplet size.
A Variable Structure Model Reference Adaptive Controller (VS-MRAC) using state Variables is proposed for single input multi output systems. . The structure of the switching functions is designed based on stability requirements, and global exponential stability is proved. Transient behavior is analyzed using sliding mode control and shows perfect model following at a finite time. The effect of input disturbances on stability and transients is investigated and shows preference to the conventional MRAC schemes with integral adaptation law. Sliding surfaces are independent of system parameters and therefore VS-MRAC is insensitive to system parameter variations. Simulation is presented to clear the theoretical results.
An improved NDIF method is introduced to efficiently extract eigenvalues and eigenmodes of two-dimensional, arbitrarily shaped acoustic cavities. The NDIF method, which was developed by the authors for the eigen-mode analysis of arbitrarily shaped acoustic cavities, membranes, and plates, has the feature that it yields highly accurate eigenvalues compared with other analytical methods or numerical methods(FEM and BEM). However, the NDIF method has the weak point that the system matrix of the NDIF method depends on the frequency parameter and, as a result, a final system equation doesn's take the form of an algebra eigenvalue problem. The system matrix of the improved NDIF method developed in the paper is independent of the frequency parameter and eigenvalues and mode shapes can be efficiently obtained by solving a typical algebraic eigenvalue problem. Finally, the validity and accuracy of the proposed method is verified in two case studies, which indicate that eigenvalues and mode shapes obtained by the proposed method are very accurate compared to the exact method, the NDIF method or FEM(ANSYS).

Device-to-Device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks is a promising add-on component for future radio communication systems. It provides more access opportunities for local device pairs and enhances system throughput (ST), especially when mobile relays (MR) are further enabled to facilitate D2D links when the channel condition of their desired links is unfavorable. However, mutual interference is inevitable due to spectral reuse, and moreover, selecting a suitable transmission mode to benefit the correlated resource allocation (RA) is another difficult problem. We aim to optimize ST of the hybrid system via joint consideration of mode selection (MS) and RA, which includes admission control (AC), power control (PC), channel assignment (CA) and relay selection (RS). However, the original problem is generally NP-hard; therefore, we decompose it into two parts where a hierarchical structure exists: (i) PC is mode-dependent, but its optimality can be perfectly addressed for any given mode with additional AC design to achieve individual quality-of-service requirements. (ii) Based on that optimality, the joint design of MS, CA and RS can be viewed from the graph perspective and transferred into the maximum weighted independent set problem, which is then approximated by our greedy algorithm in polynomial-time. Thanks to the numerical results, we elucidate the efficacy of our mechanism and observe a resulting gain in MR-aided D2D communication.
This paper presents a new stand-alone wind-based induction generator system with constant frequency and adjustable output voltage. The proposed generator consists of a six-phase cage-rotor induction machine with two separate three-phase balanced stator windings and a three-phase space vector pulse width modulation inverter that operates as a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). The first stator winding is fed by the STATCOM and used to excite the machine while the second stator winding is connected to the generator external load. The main frequency of the STATCOM is determined to be constant and equal to the load-requested frequency. The generator output frequency is independent of the load power demand and its prime mover speed because the frequency of the induced emf in the second stator winding is the same as this constant frequency. A sliding mode control (SMC) is developed to regulate the generator output voltage. A second SMC is used to force the zero active power exchanged between the machine and the STATCOM. Some simulation and experimental results are presented to prove the validity and effectiveness of the proposed generator system.
Generally, fuel cell has characteristics of low voltage, large current and voltage variation under load change. Therefore, DC output voltage of fuel cell is too low to convert into AC with high efficiency and good performance. For this reason, fuel cell generating system is composed of DC-DC converter and inverter in cascade. This paper used 2-phase boost DC-DC converter to obtain low distortion waveform and reduce input-output current ripple, and discussed inverter which can be operated in independent drive mode and utility line interface drive mode. Then, the change of modes can be achived smoothly.
Three-dimensional panels are one of the modern construction systems which can be placed in the category of industrial buildings. There have always been a lot of studies and efforts to identify the behavior of these panels and improve their capacity due to their earthquake resistance and high speed of performance. This study will provide a comparative evaluation of behavior of updated three-dimensional panel's structural components under lateral load in both independent and dependent modes. In fact, this study tries to simultaneously evaluate strengthening effect of three-dimensional panels and the effects of system state (independent, L-shaped and BOX shaped Walls) with reinforcement armatures with different angles on the three-dimensional panels. Overall, six independent wall model, L-shaped, roofed L-shaped, BOX-shaped walls with symmetric loading, BOX -shaped wall with asymmetrical loading and roofed BOX-shaped wall were built. Then the models are strengthened without strengthened reinforcement and with strengthened reinforcements with an angle of 30, 45 and 60 degrees. The applied lateral loading, is exerted by changing the location on the end wall. In BOX-shaped wall, in symmetric and asymmetric loading, the load bearing capacity will be increased about 200 and 50% respectively. Now, if strengthened, the load bearing capacity in symmetric and asymmetric loading will be increased 3.5 and 2 times respectively. The effective angle of placement of strengthened reinforcement in the independent wall is 45 and 60 degrees. But in BOX-shaped and L-shaped walls, the use of strengthened reinforcement 45 degrees is recommended.

ABSTRACT This paper presents results of parametric studies of the seismic responses of a reactor containment structure on layered base soil. Among the numerous parameters, this study concentrates on the effects of embedment of structure to the base soil, thickness of the soil layers, stiffness of the base soil, and the definition point of the input motion. For the analysis, a substructure method using frequency independent impedances is adopted. The method is based on the mode superposition method in time domain using the composite modal damping values of the SSI system computed from the ratio of dissipated energy to the strain energy for each mode. From the study results, the sensitives of each parameter on the earthquake responses have been suggested for the practical application of the substructure method of SSI analysis.
Objective: The objective of this study was to examine multi-modal interaction effects of input-mode switching on the use of smart phones. Background: Multi-modal is considered as an efficient alternative for input and output of information in mobile environments. However, there are various limitations in current mobile UI (User Interface) system that overlooks the transition between different modes or the usability of a combination of multi modal uses. Method: A pre-survey determined five representative tasks from smart phone tasks by their functions. The first experiment involved the use of a uni-mode for five single tasks; the second experiment involved the use of a multi-mode for three dual tasks. The dependent variables were user preference and task completion time. The independent variable in the first experiment was the type of modes (i.e., Touch, Pen, or Voice) while the variable in the second experiment was the type of tasks (i.e., internet searching, subway map, memo, gallery, and application store). Results: In the first experiment, there was no difference between the uses of pen and touch devices. However, a specific mode type was preferred depending on the functional characteristics of the tasks. In the second experiment, analysis of results showed that user preference depended on the order and combination of modes. Even with the transition of modes, users preferred the use of multi-modes including voice. Conclusion: The order of combination of modes may affect the usability of multi-modes. Therefore, when designing a multi-modal system, the fact that there are frequent transitions between various mobile contents in different modes should be properly considered. Application: It may be utilized as a user-centered design guideline for mobile multi modal UI system.
In recent years, some converter structures and analyzing methods for the voltage regulation of stand-alone self-excited induction generators (SEIGs) have been introduced. However, all of them are concerned with the three-phase voltage control of three-phase SEIGs or the single-phase voltage control of single-phase SEIGs for the operation of these machines under balanced load conditions. In this paper, each phase voltage is controlled separately through separated converters, which consist of a full-bridge diode rectifier and one-IGBT. For this purpose, the principle of the electronic load controllers supported by fuzzy logic is employed in the two-different proposed converter structures. While changing single phase consumer loads that are independent from each other, the output voltages of the generator are controlled independently by three-number of separated electronic load controllers (SELCs) in two different mode operations. The aim is to obtain a rated power from the SEIG via the switching of the dump loads to be the complement of consumer load variations. The transient and steady state behaviors of the whole system are investigated by simulation studies from the point of getting the design parameters, and experiments are carried out for validation of the results. The results illustrate that the proposed SELC system is capable of coping with independent consumer load variations to keep output voltage at a desired value for each phase. It is also available for unbalanced consumer load conditions. In addition, it is concluded that the proposed converter without a filter capacitor has less harmonics on the currents.
