As the structure of broken rock mass is complex, with obvious discontinuity and anisotropy, it is generally necessary to reinforce broken rock mass using grouting in underground construction. The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the mechanical properties of broken rock mass after grouting reinforcement with consideration of the characteristics of broken rock mass (i.e., degree of fragmentation and shape) and a range of reinforcement methods such as relative strength ratio between the broken rock mass and cement-based grout stone body (λ), and volumetric block proportion (VBP) representing the volumetric ratio of broken rock mass and the overall cement grout-broken rock mass mixture after the reinforcement. The experimental results show that the strength and deformation of the reinforced broken rock mass is largely determined by relative strength ratio (λ) and VBP. In addition, the enhancement in compressive strength by grouting is more obvious for broken rock mass with spherical shape under a relatively high strength ratio (e.g., λ=2.0), whereas the shape of rock mass has little influence when the strength ratio is low (e.g., λ=0.1). Importantly, the results indicate that columnar splitting failure and inclined shear failure are two typical failure modes of broken rock mass with grouting reinforcement.
A reinforcement is required to ensure the structural safety in case of railway embankment excavation under railway load. A large diameter soil nailing with concrete wall is applied as the reinforcement method instead of the conventional soil nailing system. In this study, a series of 3 dimensional numerical analyses are performed to investigate the optimum reinforcement considering 15 different conditions based on the length, lateral spacing, diameter, and inclination of the reinforcement. The interface between soil nail and perimetric grout is considered by means of cohesion, stiffness and perimeter of the grout. 0.3 m of reinforcement diameter is assessed as the most appropriate based on the economical viewpoint though ground displacement decreases with the increase of diameter, however the difference of displacement is negligible between 0.4 m and 0.3 m of diameter. Surface settlement, lateral displacement of wall, and stress of reinforcement are calculated and economic viewpoint to reinforce embankment considered. Consequently, the optimum reinforcement conditions considering those factors are evaluated as 3 m in length, 0.3 m in diameter, 1.5 m in lateral spacing, and 10 degree of inclination angle in the case of 3 m of excavation depth. Additionally, inclined potential failure surface occurs with approximately 60 degrees from the end of nails and the surface settlement and wall lateral displacement are restrained successfully by the large diameter soil nailing, based on the result of shear strain rate.
Deep coupling beams are more prone to suffer brittle shear failure. The addition of steel fibers to seismic members such as coupling beams can improve their shear performance and ductility. Based on the test results of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) coupling beams with span-to-depth ratio between 1.5 and 2.5 under lateral reverse cyclic load, the shear mechanism were analyzed by using strut-and-tie model theory, and the effects of the span-to-depth ratio, compressive strength and volume fraction of steel fiber on shear strengths were also discussed. A simplified calculation method to predict the shear capacity of SFRC deep coupling beams was proposed. The results show that the shear force is mainly transmitted by a strut-and-tie mechanism composed of three types of inclined concrete struts, vertical reinforcement ties and nodes. The influence of span-to-depth ratio on shear capacity is mainly due to the change of inclination angle of main inclined struts. The increasing of concrete compressive strength or volume fraction of steel fiber can improve the shear capacity of SFRC deep coupling beams mainly by enhancing the bearing capacity of compressive struts or tensile strength of the vertical tie. The proposed calculation method is verified using experimental data, and comparative results show that the prediction values agree well with the test ones.

An aircraft fuel hose is a kind of high pressure hose, and generally consists of a nipple, a socket, an inner tube, and a reinforcement layer to increase the tensile strength. Especially the nipple supports the other components in manufacturing stages such as the swaging or crimping processes however, the nipple also serves to prevent leakage in cases of hose engagement with a hydraulic system. To ensure the seal of the hose assembly, a beam seal fitting with metal-to-metal contact is usually adopted at the end of a nipple. Therefore, the geometry of the beam is an important parameter to be determined to make sure there is sufficient contact force. This study aims to investigate the effects of beam seal geometry on the contact force by changing the inclined angle and the thickness of the beam. The results reveal that the proper thickness and inclined angle of the beam seal are 0.45 mm and $8.5^{\circ}$, respectively.

In order to know the range of install possibles of the horizontal stay without general stay, strength characteristic tests were performed for the Vertical and 80[$^{\circ}$] inclined concrete poles. From the results of one cycle strength tests, the safety factors were 2.8, 2.5 and 2.1 for the poles of general load, heavy load and high strength load, respectively. However, the crack was occurred when the bending bounds of upper part of pole was above 2[$^{\circ}$], and working load was similar to the rated load of pole at this time. Therefore, it could be concluded that the reinforcement by the installation of the stay and the support was necessary certainly, if the bending bounds of pole, which was installed on a solid foundation, are above 2[$^{\circ}$].
As recently, there have been two earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater in Korea and the number of smaller earthquakes has increased, a lot of research and interest in earthquake-resistant design are increasing. Especially, the Pohang earthquake has also raised interest in earthquake-resistant design of port facilities. In this study, experiments and analysis were conducted on the dynamic behavior of upright and inclined breakwaters during earthquakes among port structures through the 1g shaking table test. To this end, three seismic waves were applied to the model to which the similarity law (scale effect) was applied: long period (Hachinohe), short period (Ofunato) and artificial seismic waves. The acceleration and displacement of the upright and inclined breakwaters were analyzed according to whether the DCM method was reinforced during earthquakes based on the results of shaking table test. As the result, the dynamic behavior of the upright and inclined breakwater shows a tendency to suppress the amplification of acceleration as bearing capacity and rigidity increase when DCM method is reinforced.

In this study, the large scale test was performed to investigate the behavior of failure on the embankment and spillway transitional zone by overtopping. The pore water pressure, earth pressure, settlement and failure behaviors according to several reinforcing method were compared and analyzed. The pore water pressure showed a small change in the spillway transition zone and core, indicating that the riprap and geotextile efficiently reinforced the embankment, but non-reinforcement showed a largely change in pore water pressure. The earth pressure by riprap and geotextile at upstream slope and bottom core increased rapidly with the infiltration of the pore water by overtopping. And the earth pressure at crest showed a smally change due to effect of the inclined core. A settlement by riprap showed a small change and the geotextile decreased a rapidly due to failure of crest. The width of failure by riprap at intermediate stage (50 min) showed a largely due to sliding of crest. But, the width and depth of the seepage erosion after the intermediate overtopping period (100 min) were very small due to the effect of riprap than geotextile and non-reinforcement which delayed failure. It has the effect that protect reservoir embankment from erosion in the central part. The pore water pressure at the spillway transition zone due to overtopping increased a rapidly in the case of non-reinforcement, but the reinforced methods by geotextile and riprap showed a smally change. Therefore, the reinforced method by riprap and geotextile was a very effective method to protect permanently and the emergency an embankment due to overtopping, respectively.
In the present study, an improved design method was developed for the punching shear strength of interior slabcolumn connections and column footings with and without shear reinforcement. In the evaluation of the punching shear strength, the possible failure mechanisms of the connections and column footings were considered. The considered failures modes were inclined tensile cracking of concrete, yielding of shear re-bars, and concrete crushing of compression zone/strut. The punching shear applied to the concrete critical section was assumed to be resisted mainly by the compression zone. The punching shear strength of the concrete compression zone was evaluated based on the material failure criteria of the concrete subjected to the compressive normal stress and shear stress. For verification of the proposed design method, its prediction was compared with the existing test results. The result showed that the proposed method predicted the strengths of the test specimens better than the current design methods of the KCI code for both the shear reinforced and unreinforced cases.

The shear failure modes of reinforced concrete members using high-strength materials (high-strength concrete and high-strength steel) are different to those of reinforced concrete members using normal-strength materials. The reinforced concrete members using high-strength materials are inclined to fail due to concrete crushing before the shear reinforcing bar reaches its yield strength. This paper presents an evaluation equation to calculate the maximum shear reinforcement ratio based on the material stresses and strains when the reinforced concrete members fail in shear. The maximum shear reinforcement ratio calculated by the proposed equation increases as the compressive strength of concrete increases. Test results of 97 reinforced concrete members reported in the technical literatures are used to check the validity of the proposed equation. The comparison between the test results and the ratio calculated using the proposed equation indicated that the shear failure modes depended on the interaction between the amount of shear reinforcement and the compressive strength of concrete.
The objective of the present study is to evaluate the shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement at the concrete interfaces with smooth construction joint. The transverse reinforcing bars were classified into two groups: V-type for the arrangement perpendicular to the interface and X-type for inclined-crossing arrangement. The transverse reinforcement ratio at the interface varied from 0.0045 to 0.0135 for V-type and 0.0064 to 0.0045 for X-type. The mechanism analysis proposed for monolithic concrete interface, derived based on the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity, was modified to evaluate the shear friction capacity of concrete interfaces with smooth construction joint. Test results showed that the specimens with X-type reinforcement had lower amount of relative slippage at the interface and higher shear friction capacity than the companion specimens with V-type reinforcement. This observation was independent of the unit weight of concrete. The mean and standard deviation of the ratios between the experimental shear friction strength of smooth construction joints and predictions obtained from the proposed model are 1.07 and 0.14, respectively.
