  • The stability assessment of abandoned gangway for the purpose of services was performed. Among the many factors that affect the stability of openings, the span of the opening in a given rock mass condition provides an important element of design. In this paper, the stability of gangway was assessed by the critical span curves proposed by Lang, the modified Mathews'stability graph method and using support measures of the Q system. In the evaluation of stability as a whole the gangway is considered as stable. But the rockfalls of wedge-shaped blocks were expected in the area in which the horizontal joints of low angle appear. The support measures such as local rock bolts are required to use for commercial purposes of the abandoned gangway. And entrance section may require the particular attention as unstable section. Since there are so many spalling due to bad blasting in the roof and sidewall of gangway, the scaling operations should be followed primarily.

  • We are developing a prototype underwater glider for subsea payload delivery. The idea is to use a glider to deliver payloads for subsea installations. In this type of application, the hydrodynamic forces and dynamic stability of the glider is of particular importance, as it has implications on the glider's endurance and operation. In this work, the effect of two different wing forms, rectangular and tapered, on the hydrodynamic characteristics and dynamic stability of the glider were investigated, to determine the optimal wing form. To determine the hydrodynamic characteristics, tow tank resistance tests were carried out using a model fitted alternately with a rectangular wing and tapered wing. Steady-state CFD analysis was conducted using the hydrodynamic coefficients obtained from the tests, to obtain the lift, drag and hydrodynamic derivatives at different angular velocities. The results show that the rectangular wing provides larger lift forces but with a reduced stability envelope. Conversely, the tapered wing exhibits lower lift force but improved dynamic stability.

  • This study was designed to investigate the stability of a lipase fused with a cellulosebinding domain (CBD) to cellulase. The fusion protein was derived from a gene cluster of a CBD fragment of a cellulase gene in Trichoderma hazianum and a lipase gene in Bacillus stearothermophilus L1. Due to the CBD, this lipase can be immobilized to a cellulose material. Factors affecting the lipase stability were divided into the reaction-independent factors (RIF), and the reaction-dependent factors (RDF). RIF includes the reaction conditions such as pH and temperature, whereas substrate limitation and product inhibition are examples of RDF. As pH 10 and $50^{\circ}C$ were found to be optimum reaction conditions for oil hydrolysis by this lipase, the stability of the free and the immobilized lipase was studied under these conditions. Avicel (microcrystalline cellulose) was used as a support for lipase immobilization. The effects of both RIF and RDF on the enzyme activity were less for the immobilized lipase than for the free lipase. Due to the irreversible binding of CBD to Avicel and the high stability of the immobilized lipase, the enzyme activity after five times of use was over $70\%$ of the initial activity.

  • Stability of the Korean Bayley Scale of Infant Development-II was tested in 305 infants by two measurements of varying intervals over a span of 5-36 months. Stability of K-BSID-II performance was r=.62(p<.01), r=.08(p<.18), r=.69(p<.01), r=.18(p<.01) for mental scale raw scores, mental scale index scores (MDI), psycho-motor scale raw scores and psycho-motor scale index scores(PDI), respectively. Stability was higher for the shorter test-retest interval group. Correlations between raw scores among infants with retest intervals of more than 2 years were stable on both mental and psycho-motor scales. MDI showed higher stability among high-risk infants than normal infants while PDI showed higher stability among normal infants. Testers and researchers should use both raw scores and index scores for better interpretations.

  • A thioredoxin from hyperthermophile, Methanococcus jannashii (MjTRX) was characterized by use of the differential scanning calorimetry to understand the mechanisms of thermodynamic stability. MjTRX has an unfolding transition temperature of 116.5$^{\circ}C$, although the maximum free energy of the unfolding (9.9 Kcal/mol) is similar to that of E. coli thioredoxin (ETRX, 9.0 Kcal/mol). However, the temperature of maximum stability is higher than ETRX by 20$^{\circ}C$, indicating that the unfolding transition temperature increased by shifting the temperature of maximum stability. MjTRX has lower enthalpy and entropy of the unfolding compared to ETRX maintaining a similar free energy of the unfolding. From the structure and the thermodynamic parameters of MjTRX, we showed that the unfolding transition temperature of MjTRX is increased due to the decreased entropy of the unfolding. Decreasing the unfolded state entropy and increasing the folded state entropy can decrease the entropy of the unfolding. In the case of MjTRX, the increased number of proline residues decreased the unfolded state entropy and the increased enthalpy in the folded state increased the folded state entropy.

  • In this research, the automated system for 3D modeling and stability evaluation of caisson was developed. It is possible to build a BIM model while examining the stability of the structures to improve the practical use of BIM technology. This study analyzed industry cases and guidelines for caisson stability evaluation and BIM-based modeling. As a result, the data for calculating the stability evaluation of caisson as well as the modeling parameters were derived. In particular, the automated system for 3D modeling, which reflects more than 30 parameters, allows for BIM models for various types of the caisson, such as open-cell caisson, open-cell caisson with uneven, slit caisson, slit caisson with uneven, and curved caisson. The study tested the proposed system using case studies and found that it helps not only to automate the BIM model with various caisson types as parameters but also to make partial shape changes accessible. The study also confirmed that the stability evaluation can be quickly carried out with shapes changed. Finally, the study results suggest that the proposed method should complete the task seven times as fast as the conventional work method.

  • It is essential for geotechnical engineers to conduct studies and make predictions about the stability of slopes, since collapse of a slope may result in catastrophic events. The Gaussian process regression (GPR) approach was carried out for the purpose of predicting the factor of safety (FOS) of the slopes in the study that was presented here. The model makes use of a total of 327 slope cases from Iran, each of which has a unique combination of geometric and shear strength parameters that were analyzed by PLAXIS software in order to determine their FOS. The K-fold (K = 5) technique of cross-validation (CV) was used in order to conduct an analysis of the accuracy of the models' predictions. In conclusion, the GPR model showed excellent ability in the prediction of FOS of slope stability, with an R2 value of 0.8355, RMSE value of 0.1372, and MAPE value of 6.6389%, respectively. According to the results of the sensitivity analysis, the characteristics (friction angle) and (unit weight) are, in descending order, the most effective, the next most effective, and the least effective parameters for determining slope stability.

  • This paper presents a method for determination of UPFC control quantity in order to enhance the power system transient stability energy margin using Genetic Algorithms in multi-machine system. We use the minimization of energy margin as the object function in GA. To set critical energy, we use the potential energy boundary surface(PEBS) method. PEBS is one of the transient energy function(TEF) method. And we used the series voltage compensator as the UPFC model. The proposed method is applied to 6-bus, 7-line, 4-machine model system to show its effectiveness.

  • In recent years, electric power systems have been experiencing a rapid change due to the increasing electricity market. For the effective use of power system under the deregulated environment, it is important to make a fast and accurate calculation of the maximum available transfer capability (ATC) from a supply point to a demand point. In this paper, the purpose of this research is to calculate ATC fast and accurately for securing the stability of system and raising the efficiency as a result of anticipating transmission congestion according to transmission open access progressed in the future under the regulated environment of electricity market. In this paper, a study utilized a relation of the potential energy and energy function by which calculated CCT and then utilized a relation of PEBS for transient stability ATC calculation. In this paper, ATC was calculated as RPF and Energy Function method and calculation results of each method was compared. Contingence ranking method decided the weak bus by the Eigenvalues of Jacobian matrix and overloading branches by PI-index. As a result, a study proved the fast and accurate ATC calculation method considering transient stability suggested in this paper. Through the case study using New England 39 bus system, it is confirmed that the proposed method can be used for real time operation and the planning of electric market.
