A digital testing method for measurement of radial error motions of a spindle is investigated with special emphasis on developing a computer-aided in-situ inspection for machine tool manufacturing. The method utilizes three non-contact type probes and an optical encoder, based on a special computational algorithm to eliminate undesirable offset and roundness errors of the master spindle. Details of the design of hardware and software required to realize the testing method are described. Finally, advantages and limitations of the method are discussed with several test results.
Deformation twinning, one of the major deformation modes in a crystalline material, has typically been analyzed using generalized planar fault energy (GPFE) curves. Despite the significance of these curves in understanding the twin nucleation and its effect on the mechanical properties of crystals, their experimental validity is lacking. In this comparative study based on the first-principles calculation, molecular dynamics simulation, and quantitative in-situ tensile testing of Al nanowires inside a transmission electron microscopy system, we present both a theoretical and an experimental approach that enable the measurement of a part of the twin formation energy of the perfect Al crystal. The proposed experimental method is also regarded as an indirect but quantitative means for validating the GPFE theory.

Tungsten is the most promising plasma facing material for fusion reactors. Rolled W-Y2(Zr)O3 bulk material has been successfully produced in this study for future fusion engineering applications. The introduction of Zr is conducive to the refinement of the second phase particles. Nano-sized Y-Zr-O particles are observed in the powder and bulk samples. Related results show that the Y-Zr-O particle dispersion distribution improves the heat load resistance of W-Y2(Zr)O3 composite material. For four-point bend experiments in the same sampling direction, the DBTT of W-Y2(Zr)O3 composite materials is lower compared to the pure tungsten. For the same material, the DBTT of the material was selected for testing along the RD direction is lower compared to the material was selected for testing along the TD direction. Findings of this study provide suggestions for the subsequent industrial preparation of nanoscale particle-doped tungsten materials.
The resilient modulus which is presented mechanical properties of compacted subbase material is the design parameter on the Mechanistic - Empirical pavement design guide. The compaction control method on the Mechanistic - Empirical pavement design guide will be the way to confirm whether the in-situ elastic modulus measured after the compaction meets the resilient modulus which is applied the design. The resilient modulus in this study is calculated by the neural network suggested by Korea Pavement Research Program, and degree of compaction as the existing compaction control test and plate bearing capacity test(PBT) was performed to confirm whether the in-situ elastic modulus is measured. The Light Falling Weight Deflectometer(LFWD) is additionally tested for correlation analysis between each in-situ elastic modulus and resilient modulus, and is proposed correlation equation and test interval which can reduced overall testing cost. Also, the subbase compaction control procedure based on the in-situ elastic modulus is proposed using the in-situ PBT and LFWD test result.

We employed UV-Ozone treatment method for the fabrication of dense and highly conductive nanoparticle thin films. We demonstrated the UV-Ozone treatment effect on the silver nanoparticle thin films as a function of time and temperature. The capping layers of nanoparticles were decomposed after UV-Ozone treatment and dense nanoparticle thin films were obtained. Moreover, electrical and mechanical properties of the thin films after UV-Ozone treatment were measured by using resistance measurements under tension in an in-situ tensile tester. The initial resistance of nanoparticle thin films was decreased by 82.6% with optimized UV-Ozone treatment condition of $150^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes.

Three-cup anemometers are popular devices for measuring wind speeds in automated weather stations, environmental monitoring systems, and wind turbines. Cup anemometers usually suffer from lack of long-term stability owing to the wear of the bearing systems that support the rotational parts. The bearing systems are susceptible to external pollutants, vibrations, and gusts. Therefore, these anemometers have to be calibrated regularly to maintain the desired characteristics for measuring wind speed. In the present study, a new in-situ calibration system to help reduce cost and save time by calibrating the cup anemometers at the installation site is proposed. A portable in-situ calibrator was fabricated. After the characteristics of this calibrator were verified, it was used to calibrate cup anemometers. Some of the calibration results were compared with the data obtained by wind tunnel testing.
In this paper the possibility of using different regression models to predict the mechanical properties of limestone concrete after exposure to high temperatures, based on the results of non-destructive techniques, that could be easily used in-situ, is discussed. Extensive experimental work was carried out on limestone concrete mixtures, that differed in the water to cement (w/c) ratio, the type of cement and the quantity of superplasticizer added. After standard curing, the specimens were exposed to various high temperature levels, i.e., 200℃, 400℃, 600℃ or 800℃. Before heating, the reference mechanical properties of the concrete were determined at ambient temperature. After the heating process, the specimens were cooled naturally to ambient temperature and tested using non-destructive techniques. Among the mechanical properties of the specimens after heating, known also as the residual mechanical properties, the residual modulus of elasticity, compressive and flexural strengths were determined. The results show that residual modulus of elasticity, compressive and flexural strengths can be reliably predicted using an artificial neural network approach based on ultrasonic pulse velocity, residual surface strength, some mixture parameters and maximal temperature reached in concrete during heating.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted an increasing attention due to their superior mechanical properties and potential application in industries. The strength of CNT has been predicted or calculated through several simulation techniques but actual experiments on stress-strain behavior are rare due to its dimensional limit, nanoscale positioning/manipulation, and instrumental resolution. We have attempted to observe straining responses of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) with different growth methods by performing an in-situ tensile testing in a scanning electron microscope. Linear deformation and fracture behaviors of MWNT were successfully observed and its force-displacement curve was also measured from the bending stiffness and displacement of the force sensor and manipulator. We also obtained different tensile load of carbon nanotube with different growth methods.

Understanding the strength characteristics of model ice is an important issue for model testing in an ice model basin to estimate the ship performance in ice. In particular, the mechanical properties of the model ice including elastic modulus, flexural strength and compressive strength are key consideration factors. In order to understand the characteristics of the model ice during warm-up phase at KRISO's ice model basin, the strength properties are tested in this study. The infinite plate-bending method, in-situ cantilever beam test and ex-situ uniaxial compressive test are conducted to determine the strength properties of model ice. The strength characteristics of the model ice are then analyzed in terms of the warm-up phase and seasonality. These results could be valuable to quality control of the model ice characteristics in KRISO's ice model basin and to better understand the variations in strength properties during the ice model tests.

Breath analysis using a portable device is better than the classical breath analysis system in terms of installation and operation. There is an increasing need to develop cost-effective equipment for testing gas sensors from the viewpoint of functionalities that can be applied applicable to portable devices. In the present study, an economical gas chamber for in-situ gas measurement is implemented with a single gas chamber without using expensive gas storage and control equipment; the gas response characteristics are analyzed using the above-described chamber. The main features of the implemented gas chamber are simple injection procedure, improved gas diffusion, easy measurement and cleaning, support for low-power mode measurement function for portable devices, and open source platform. Moreover, an analysis of gas response characteristics based on changes in sensor voltage show that the sensitivity and 90% response time are affected by the sensor voltage. Furthermore, the sensitivity graph has an inflection point in a specific range. The gas sensor applied in this study showed fast response speed and high sensitivity for sensor voltages of 3.0-3.5 V, regardless of the concentration of acetone gas, the target gas used in this study.
