Buckling behavior of strengthened perforated plates under shear loading

  • This paper is dedicated to the buckling behaviors of strengthened perforated plates under edge shear loading, which is a typical load pattern of steel plates in civil engineering, especially in plate and box girders. The square plates considered each has a centric circular hole and is simply supported on four edges in the out-of-plane direction. Three types of strengthening stiffeners named ringed stiffener (RS), flat stiffener (FSA and FSB) and strip stiffener (SSA, SSB and SSC) are mainly discussed. The finite element method (FEM) has been employed to analyse the elastic and elasto-plastic buckling behavior of unstrengthened and strengthened perforated plates. Results show that most of the strengthened perforated plates behave higher buckling strengths than the unstrengthened ones, while the enhancements in elastic buckling stress and elasto-plastic ultimate strength are closely related to stiffener types as well as plate geometric parameters including plate slenderness ratio and hole diameter to plate width ratio. The critical slenderness ratios of shear loaded strengthened perforated plates, which determine the practical buckling pattern (i.e., elastic or elasto-plastic buckling) of the plates, are also studied. Based on the contrastive analyses of strengthening efficiency considering the influence of stiffener consumption, the most efficient cutout-strengthening methods for shear loaded perforated square plates with different slenderness ratios and circular hole diameter to plate width ratios are preliminarily identified.

Assessment of negative Poisson's ratio effect on thermal post-buckling of FG-GRMMC laminated cylindrical panels

  • This paper examines the thermal post-buckling behaviors of graphene-reinforced metal matrix composite (GRMMC) laminated cylindrical panels which possess in-plane negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) and rest on an elastic foundation. A panel consists of GRMMC layers of piece-wise varying graphene volume fractions to obtain functionally graded (FG) patterns. Based on the MD simulation results, the GRMMCs exhibit in-plane NPR as well as temperature-dependent material properties. The governing equations for the thermal post-buckling of panels are based on the Reddy's third order shear deformation shell theory. The von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relationship and the elastic foundation are also included. The nonlinear partial differential equations for GRMMC laminated cylindrical panels are solved by means of a singular perturbation technique in associate with a two-step perturbation approach and in the solution process the boundary layer effect is considered. The results of numerical investigations reveal that the thermal post-buckling strength for (0/90)5T GRMMC laminated cylindrical panels can be enhanced with an FG-X pattern. The thermal post-buckling load-deflection curve of 6-layer (0/90/0)S and (0/90)3T panels of FG-X pattern are higher than those of 10-layer (0/90/0/90/0)S and (0/90)5T panels of FG-X pattern.

  • 최근 몇 년 동안 파형강관의 사용이 증가하고 있다. 예전의 연구자들은 강관의 파괴모드를 찌그러짐(crushing)이나 변형(deformation)으로 간주하였다. 그러나 강관의 직경이 커지고 두께가 얇아짐에 따라 상대적으로 작은 변형에서 좌굴이 발생하게 된다. 지중 강관의 좌굴해석에서는 두 가지가 있는데, 하나는 지반을 탄성연속체로 보는 것이고, 또 하나는 강관을 탄성스프링으로 지지한다고 가정하는 Winkler 모델이다. 이 두 가지의 해석방법은 파형을 고려하지 않는 평면해석을 기본으로 하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 좌굴해석 수행시 Winkler 모델을 기본으로 하고, 파형의 효과를 고려하는 3차원해석을 수행하여 좌굴하중에 대한 식을 제안하였다.

Probabilistic Strength at Serviceability Limit State for Normal and SBHS Slender Stiffened Plates Under Uniaxial Compression

  • Stiffened plates with high slenderness parameters show large out-of-plane deflections, due to elastic buckling, which may occur before the plates reach their ultimate strength. From a serviceability point of view, restriction of out-of-plane deflections exceeding the fabrication tolerance is of primary importance. Compressive strength at the serviceability limit state (SLS) for slender stiffened plates under uniaxial stress was investigated through nonlinear elasto-plastic finite element analysis, considering both geometric and material nonlinearity. Both normal and high-performance steel were considered in the study. The SLS was defined based on a deflection limit and an elastic buckling strength. Probabilistic distributions of the SLS strengths were obtained through Monte Carlo simulations, in association with the response surface method. On the basis of the obtained statistical distributions, partial safety factors were proposed for SLS. Comparisons with the ultimate strength of different design codes e.g. Japanese Code, AASHTO, and Canadian Code indicate that AASHTO and Canadian Code provide significantly conservative design, while Japanese Code matches well with a 5% non-exceedance probability for compressive strength at SLS.

  • Numerical studies are performed to investigate the behavior of flat plates under combined in-plane and out-of-plane loads. The numerical model is verified by comparison with experiments for plates simply supported on four edges. Through study on different load combination and loading sequence, the critical load condition that governs the strength of the flat plate is determined. Parametric studies are performed to investigate the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity so that the moment magnification method is applicable to the flat plates.

선박 판부재의 개선된 좌굴평가 시스템의 개발 (The Development of Advanced Buckling Strength Estimation System)

  • 일반적으로 선박 판부재의 좌굴강도에 대한 안전성 평가는 선체구조 설계단계에서 반드시 거쳐야 할 단계로 한 척의 배는 수많은 판부재로 구성되어 선박구조 전체에 대한 이론적이며 체계적인 시스템을 이용한 좌골강도평가의 정확도 및 효율성이 강조되고 있다. 그러나 현재의 판부재 좌굴강도를 평가하는 각 선급의 규정치가 많은 영향인자를 고려치 않고 있거나 함축척으로 고려하고 있기 때문에 경우에 따라서는 좌굴강도가 상당한 안전측의 값을 제시하는 등 실제 선급규정치의 사용에 제약을 주기도 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 면내인장력의 영향등 선급들의 좌굴 규정치뿐만이 아니라 면내인장력의 효과, 경계조건, 횡하중 및 잔류응력등을 고려하면서 손쉽게 좌굴평가를 수행할 수 있는 선진 좌굴평가시스템을 개발하였다. 이들 선진 좌굴평가시스템을 이용하면 선박판부재의 보다 정도 높고 효율적인 평가가 가능하리라 생각되며 앞으로 대중적인 사용을 위해 워크스테이션 외에도 개인용 컴퓨터에서의 시스템 구축을 계획하고 있다.

  • One of the primary factors like plate structure In ship is redundancy structure that is comparable with ocean structure and frame structure. The more component material becomes buckling collapsed locally the less structure stiffness becomes accordingly. As a result, by increasing the load distribution of any other subsidiary structure continually component member collapses, therefore the structure could be in danger of collapse. So, in order to interpret this phenomenon precisely, the study on boundary condition of the ship's Plate and post-buckling analysis must be considered. In this study, the rectangular plate is compressed by the in-plane load. Buckling & Ultimate strength characteristics we applied to be the elasto-plasticity large deformation by F.E.M. On this basis, elasto-plasticity of the plain plate are investigated. This study proved elasto-plasticity behaviour of tile ship's plate In accordance with boundary condition based on the series analysis In case of the compressive load operation.

면내 조합하중과 횡압을 받는 선박 이중판의 강도 평가 (Strength Evaluation of a Doubler Plate of Ship Structure subjected to the In-plane Combined Load and Lateral Pressure Load)

  • A study for the structural strength evaluation of doubler plates subjected to the in-plane combined load and lateral pressure load has been performed through a systematic evaluation process. In order to properly estimate the static strength of doubler plate, elasto-plastic large deflection analysis is introduced including the contact effect between main plate and doubler. The characteristics of stiffness and strength variation are discussed based on the analysis results. Also, in order to compare the doubler structure with the original strength of main plate without doubler, a simple formula for the evaluation of the equivalent flat plate thickness is derived based on the additional series analysis of fiat plate structure. Using this derived equation, the thickness change of a equivalent flat plate is analyzed according to the variation of various design parameters of doubler plate and some design guides are suggested In order to maintain the original strength of main plate without doubler reinforcement. Finally, correlation between derived equivalent plate thickness formula and the developed buckling strength formulas for intact plates by author et al. is discovered and these relations are formulated for the future development of simple strength evaluation formula of doubler plate structure.

  • 본 연구는 폭이 변하는 transversely isotropic 판에서 평행한 변에 서로 크기가 다른 면내 축방향 압축력이 작용하며, 경사진면에는 면내 전단력이 작용하는 경우 판의 탄성좌굴거동에 관한 해석적 연구결과이다. 폭이 변하는 등방성판의 좌굴해석을 위해 개발된 기존의 이론적 해를 확장하여 transversely isotropic 재료의 역학적 성질을 고려한 좌굴해석을 할 수 있도록 하였다. 이론식은 power series를 사용하여 유도하였으며, 유한요소해석을 부가적으로 수행하고 그 결과를 이론식을 사용한 해석결과와 비교, 검토하였다.

Study on thermal buckling and post-buckling behaviors of FGM tubes resting on elastic foundations

  • This paper studies thermal buckling and post-buckling behaviors of functionally graded materials (FGM) tubes subjected to a uniform temperature rise and resting on elastic foundations via a refined beam model. Compared to the Timoshenko beam theory, the number of unknowns of this model are the same and no correction factors are required. The material properties of the FGM tube vary continuously in the radial direction according to a power function. Two ends of the tube are assumed to be simply supported and in-plane boundary conditions are immovable. Energy variation principle is employed to establish the governing equations. A two-step perturbation method is adopted to determine the critical thermal buckling loads and post-buckling paths of the tubes with arbitrary radial non-homogeneity. Through detailed parametric studies, it can be found that the tube has much higher buckling temperature and post-buckling strength when it is supported by an elastic foundation.
