The problem of a semi-infinite magneto-electro-elastically impermeable mode-III crack in a magneto-electro-elastic material is considered under the action of impact loads. For the case when a pair of concentrated anti-plane shear impacts, electric displacement and magnetic induction impacts are exerted symmetrically on the upper and lower surfaces of the crack, the magneto-electro-elastic field ahead of the crack tip is determined in explicit form. The dynamic intensity factors and dynamic energy density factor are obtained. The method adopted is to reduce the mixed initial-boundary value problem, by using the Laplace and Fourier transforms, into three simultaneous dual integral equations, one of which is converted into an Abel's integral equation and the others into a singular integral equation with Cauchy kernel. Based on the obtained fundamental solutions of point impact loads, the solutions of two kinds of different loading cases are evaluated by integration. For some particular cases, the present results reduce to the previous results.
The stress patterns of vertical stiffener of plate girder bridge were examined by existing data of actual measurement stress for steel bridges and the structural details of vertical stiffener of plate girder bridge having seeked rationalization and abbreviation were investigated by 1/2 bridge model. As the results, the out-of-plane stress occur in the upper parts of vertical stiffner and fatigue cracks by the action of alternative stress is apt to occur in web plate of lower parts vertical stiffener. Also, the gap between lower parts of vertical stiffner and lower flange of plate girder bridge seeking rationalization and abbreviation is effective to adopt 100mm.
As one of the most versatile semiconductors, zinc oxide (ZnO) with one-dimensional (1-D) nanostructures has been significantly developed for the application of ultraviolet (UV) lasers, photochemical sensors, photocatalysts, and so on. Such 1-D nanowires could be easily achieved due to the anisotropic growth rate along the [0001] direction. However, such typical growth habit leads to decrease the surface area of the (0001) plane, which plays a central role in not only UV lasing action but also photocatalytic reaction. This fact lead us to develop ZnO crystal with enhanced polar surface area through crystal growth control. The purpose of this review is to provide readers a simple route to plate-type ZnO crystal with highly enhanced polar surfaces and their applications for UV-laser, photocatalyst, and antibacterial agents. In addition, we will highlight the recent study on pilot-scale synthesis of plate-type ZnO crystal for industrial applications.

A finite element program for material nonlinear fracture analysis of reinforced concrete shell was developed. This method can be used to trace the load-displacement response and crack propagation through the elastic and inelastic ranges. A layered isoparametric flat finite element considering the coupling effect between the in-plane and the bending action was developed. Mindlin plate theory taking account of transverse shear deformation was used. The validity of the present program was proved by comparing the numerical results with Hedgren's experimental data.
Single crystals of zinc tungstates were grown by the Czochralski method. To obtain the seed crystals various methods were employed including 4 points platinum wirse which dipped the melt and the capillary action from the melt led the 3 differently oriented seeds such as [100], [010] and [001] directions. Optimum growing conditions were observed as neck diameter 2mm rotation speed 50-60 rpm maximum diameter 15mm and pulling rate 0-10 mm/hr. Dendrites covered on the olidified surface in a platinum crucible were turned out to be [001] direction because obviously this crystal has the strong [001] preferential growth habit. The (100) and (010) planes of single crystals showed the slip planes and the (010) plane showed the perfect cleavage surface.
Conventional plate I-girders are sensitive to local buckling of the web when they are subjected mainly to shear action because the slenderness of the web in out-of-plane direction is much bigger. The local buckling of the web can also cause the distorsion of the plate flange under compression as a thin-walled plate has very low torsional stiffness due to its open section. A new I-girder consisted of corrugated web, a concrete-filled rectangular tubular flange under compression and a plate flange under tension is presented to improve its resistance to local buckling of the web and distorsion of the flat plate flange under compression. Experimental tests on a conventional plate I-girder and a new presented I-girder are conducted to study the failure process and the failure mechanisms of the two specimens. Strain developments at some critical positions, load-lateral displacement curves, and load-deflection curves of the two specimens have all be measured and analyzed. Based on these results, the failure mechanisms of the two kinds of I-girders are discussed.
Plants play important roles in human life not only as suppliers of oxygen but also as a fundamental resource to sustain the human race on this earthly plane. Plants also play a major role in our nutrition by converting energy from the sun during photosynthesis. In addition, plants have been used extensively in traditional medicine since time immemorial. Information in the biomedical literature has indicated that many natural herbs have been investigated for their efficacy against lethal irradiation. Pharmacological studies by various groups of investigators have shown that natural herbs possess significant radioprotective activity. In view of the immense medicinal importance of natural product based radioprotective agents, this review aims at compiling all currently available information on radioprotective agents from medicinal plants and herbs, especially the evaluation methods and mechanisms of action. In this review we particularly emphasize on ethnomedicinal uses, botany, phytochemistry, mechanisms of action and toxicology. We also describe modern techniques for evaluating herbal samples as radioprotective agents. The usage of herbal remedies for combating lethal irradiation is a green anti-irradiation approach for the betterment of human beings without high cost, side effects and toxicity.

Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate the changes in trunk movement and ground reaction during sit to stand motion using visual feedback. Methods : Fifteen adults (average age: 23.53±1.77 years) participated in this study. An infrared reflective marker was attached to the body each participant for motion analysis, and the participants performed sit to stand motion while wearing a hat attached with a laser pointer, which provided visual feedback. First, the sit to stand action was repeated thrice without obtaining any visual feedback, followed by a three minute break. Next, the laser pointers attached to hats were irradiated on a whiteboard, located at a distance of 5 m in front of the chairs, on which the participants sat; a baseline was set, and the participants performed stand up movements three times under this condition. A visual feedback was provided to the participants to prevent the laser pointers from crossing the set baseline. During each stand-up movement, the position of the reflective marker attached to the subject's body was recorded in real time using an infrared camera for motion analysis. The trunk movement and ground reaction force were extracted through recorded data and analyzed according to the presence or absence of visual feedback. Results : The results indicated that in the presence of a visual feedback during the sit-to-stand movements, the range of motion of the trunk and hip joints decreased, whereas that of the knee and ankle joints increased in the sagittal plane. The rotation angle of the trunk in the horizontal plane decreased. The left and right movement speed of the center of pressure increased, the pressing force decreased, and the forward and backward movement speed of the trunk decreased. Conclusion : The results suggest that the efficiency and stability of the stand up movement of a body increase when a visual feedback is provided.

Rehabilitation of historical unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings is a priority in many parts of the world, since those buildings are a living part of history and a testament of human achievement of the era of their construction. Many of these buildings are still operational; comprising brittle materials with no reinforcements, with spatially distributed mass and stiffness, they are not encompassed by current seismic assessment procedures that have been developed for other structural types. To facilitate the difficult task of selecting a proper rehabilitation strategy - often restricted by international treaties for non-invasiveness and reversibility of the intervention - and given the practical requirements for the buildings' intended reuse, this paper presents a practical procedure for assessment of seismic demands of URM buildings - mainly historical constructions that lack a well-defined diaphragm action. A key ingredient of the method is approximation of the spatial shape of lateral translation, ${\Phi}$, that the building assumes when subjected to a uniform field of lateral acceleration. Using ${\Phi}$ as a 3-D shape function, the dynamic response of the system is evaluated, using the concepts of SDOF approximation of continuous systems. This enables determination of the envelope of the developed deformations and the tendency for deformation and damage localization throughout the examined building for a given design earthquake scenario. Deformation demands are specified in terms of relative drift ratios referring to the in-plane and the out-of-plane seismic response of the building's structural elements. Drift ratio demands are compared with drift capacities associated with predefined performance limits. The accuracy of the introduced procedure is evaluated through (a) comparison of the response profiles with those obtained from detailed time-history dynamic analysis using a suite of ten strong ground motion records, five of which with near-field characteristics, and (b) evaluation of the performance assessment results with observations reported in reconnaissance reports of the field performance of two neoclassical torsionally-sensitive historical buildings, located in Thessaloniki, Greece, which survived a major earthquake in the past.
Commonly in steel frames, steel beam and concrete slab are connected together by shear keys to work as a unit member which is called composite beam. When a composite beam is subjected to positive bending, flexural strength and stiffness of the beam can be increased due to "composite action". At the same time despite these advantages, composite action increases the strain at the beam bottom flange and it might affect beam plastic rotation capacity. This paper presents results of study on the rotation capacity of composite beam connected to Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) column in the steel moment resisting frame buildings. Due to out-of-plane deformation of column flange, moment transfer efficiency of web connection is reduced and this results in reduction of beam plastic rotation capacity. In order to investigate the effects of width-to-thickness ratio (B/t) of RHS column on the rotation capacity of composite beam, cyclic loading tests were conducted on three full scale beam-to-column subassemblies. Detailed study on the different steel beam damages and concrete slab damages are presented. Experimental data showed the importance of this parameter of RHS column on the seismic behavior of composite beams. It is found that occurrence of severe concrete bearing crush at the face of RHS column of specimen with smaller width-to-thickness ratio resulted in considerable reduction on the rate of strain increase in the bottom flange. This behavior resulted in considerable improvement of rotation capacity of this specimen compared with composite and even bare steel beam connected to the RHS column with larger width-to-thickness ratio.
