  • Satellite orbit determination using angles only data from single ground station is carried out. The KOMPSAT-1 satellite mono-pulse angle tracking data from 9-meter S-band antenna at KARI site in Daejeon are used for the orbit determination. Various angle tracking arcs from one-day to five-day are processed and the orbit determination results are analyzed. Antenna pointing data are predicted based on the orbit determination results to check the possibility of re-acquisition and tracking of the satellite signal. Normal satellite mission operations including orbit determination, antenna prediction, satellite re-acquisition and automatic tracking from predicted antenna angle pointing data are concluded to be possible when three-day angle tracking data from single tracking station are used for the orbit determination.

  • Recently the ab initio effective valence shell Hamiltonian method $H^v$ has been extended to treat spin-orbit coupling in atoms or molecules. The quasidegenerate many-body perturbation theory based $H^v$ method has an advantage of determining the spin-orbit coupling energies of all valence states for both the neutral species and its ions with a similar accuracy from a single computation of the effective spin-orbit coupling operator. The new spin-orbit $H^v$ method is applied to calculating the fine structure splittings of the valence states of SiH, $SiH^+$, and $SiH^{2+}$ not only to assess the accuracy of the method but also to investigate the spin-orbit interaction of highly excited states of SiH species. The computed spin-orbit splittings for ground states are in good agreement with experiment and the few available ab initio computations. The ordering of fine structure levels of the bound and quasi-bound spin-orbit coupled valence states of SiH and its ions, for which neither experiment nor theory is available, is predicted.

  • In this paper, an on-board orbit propagator and compressing trajectory method based on B-spline for a lunar explorer are proposed. An explorer should recognize its own orbit for a successful mission operation. Generally, orbit determination is periodically performed at the ground station, and the computed orbit information is subsequently uploaded to the explorer, which would generate a heavy workload for the ground station and the explorer. A high-performance computer at the ground station is employed to determine the orbit required for the explorer in the parking orbit of Earth. The method not only reduces the workload of the ground station and the explorer, but also increases the orbital prediction accuracy. Then, the data was compressed into coefficients within a given tolerance using B-spline. The compressed data is then transmitted to the explorer efficiently. The data compression is maximized using the proposed methods. The methods are compared with a fifth order polynomial regression method. The results show that the proposed method has the potential for expansion to various deep space probes.

  • It was investigated that the effect of zonal harmonics to transfer orbit. Since parking orbit is located at low altitude, the zonal harmonics affects transfer orbit relatively high sense. So under the zonal harmonics, eccentricity and semi-major-axis which were related orbit altitude at the first hand, were investigated. As a result the zonal harmonics increases the altitude of apogee of transfer orbit. So if the zonal harmonics is considered in orbit transfer the fuel can be saved a little.

  • The precise prediction of future position of satellite depends on the accurate determination of orbit, which is also helpful in performing orbit maneuvers and trajectory correction maneuvers. For estimating the orbit of satellite many methods are being used. Some of the conventional methods are based on (i) Differential Correction (DC) (ii) Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). In this paper, Differential Evolution (DE) is used to determine the orbit. Orbit Determination using DC and EKF requires some initial guess of the state vector to initiate the algorithm, whereas DE does not require an initial guess since a wide range of bounds for the design unknown variables (orbital elements) is sufficient. This technique is uniformly valid for all orbits viz. circular, elliptic or hyperbolic. Simulated observations have been used to demonstrate the performance of the method. The observations are generated by including random noise. The simulation model that generates the observations includes the perturbation due to non-spherical earth up to second zonal harmonic term.

  • GEO-KOMPSAT2 shall provide higher quality of image than the COMS and uses star tracker instead of earth sensor, which requires precise onboard orbit information. This requires precise on-ground orbit determination. For COMS, orbit determination is performed using the ranging data obtained from tracking system located in DAEJON. For accurate orbit determination of GEO-KOMPSAT2, KARI is building a secondary tracking station in CHUUK Islands. In this paper, the achievable accuracy of table based onboard orbit parameter generator which interpolates orbit data obtained from on-ground orbit determination using tracking data collected from two ground stations. Two types of approaches have been applied; covariance analysis and numerical analysis. By combining two analysis results, total orbit error has been estimated.

  • This study analyzes considerations for satellite orbit elements for the national micro-satellite system to effectively perform its mission in accordance with the operational concept, and compares the conventionally used Walker method to improve the performance of the satellite constellation method of the repeating ground track orbit. In satellite orbit element analysis, altitude candidate values of micro-satellite system, use of eccentricity and argument of perigee through frozen orbit, necessity of selection of appropriate orbit inclination, and satellite phasing rules for flying the same repeating ground track orbit are proposed. Based on these analysis results, the superiority of the constellation method of the repeating ground track orbit compared to the Walker method is verified in terms of revisit performance analysis, global coverage characteristics, and orbit consistency.

  • GEO-KOMPSAT-2 which is under development by KARI to be launched in 2018 is expected to be injected into its orbit through the standard GTO(Geostationary Transfer Orbit) or SSTO(Supersynchronous Transfer Orbit). While the standard GTO mission has been applied for the most of the geostationary satellites, the SSTO mission is rare case and significantly different from the standard GTO mission in technical point of view. This paper lists the operational constraints to be applied for GEO-KOMPSAT-2 SSTO mission, and introduces a preliminary LAE burn plan for GEO-KOMPSAT-2 mission. In order to evaluate the developed plan, a simulation study has been performed considering ground station visibility.

  • The safety of electronic components used in aerospace systems against cosmic rays is one of the most important requirements in their design and construction (especially satellites). In this work, by calculating the dose caused by proton beams in geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) orbit using the MCNPX Monte Carlo code and the MULLASSIS code, the effect of different structures in the protection of cosmic rays has been evaluated. A multi-layer radiation shield composed of aluminum, water and polyethylene was designed and its performance was compared with shielding made of aluminum alone. The results show that the absorbed dose by the simulated protective layers has increased by 35.3% and 44.1% for two-layer (aluminum, polyethylene) and three-layer (aluminum, water, polyethylene) protection respectively, and it is effective in the protection of electronic components. In addition to that, by replacing the multi-layer shield instead of the conventional aluminum shield, the mass reduction percentage will be 38.88 and 39.69, respectively, for the two-layer and three-layer shield compared to the aluminum shield.

  • GPS satellite positions can be obtained from the navigation message transmitted from the GPS satellite. In this paper, the accuracy of broadcast orbit and clock are analyzed by comparing with the NGA precise ephemeris. For analyzing global and local orbit errors in 2004 to 2013, GPS satellite visibilities are calculated in Korea. Local RMS of 3D orbit error and SISRE are 4 cm and 3 cm less than global RMS of 3D orbit errors and SISRE. Orbit and clock errors are calculated for each GPS satellite Block for 10 years. SISRE of Block IIA satellites are 2.8 times greater than Block IIF satellites. The correlation between orbit errors and shadow condition is analyzed. The orbit errors in shadow is 2.1% higher than that in sunlight. Correlation analysis between the orbit errors and solar/geomagnetic index shows that orbit errors has a high correlation with from 2004 to 2008. However, the correlation became low since 2009.
