Direct Numerical Simulation was carried out to predict mass transfer in turbulent flow around a rotating stepped cylinder. This investigation is a follow-up study of DNS of turbulent flow in Nesic et al. [Corrosion, Vol. 56, No. 10, pp. 1005 - 1014] The original motivation of this work stemmed from the efforts to design a simple device which can generate flows of high turbulence intensity at low cost for corrosion researchers. Two cases were considered; Sc=1 and 10 both at Re=335. Here, Sc and Re stand for Schmidt number and Reynolds number, respectively, based on the step height and the surface speed of the cylinder upstream of the step. Main focus was placed on the correlation between turbulence and mass transfer. The spatio-temporal evolution of concentration field is discussed. The numerical results are qualitatively compared with those of the experiment conducted with a similar flow configuration.
In this research, the simulation method for acoustic sounds by a uniform flow around a two-dimensional circular cylinder by using the finite difference lattice Boltzmann model is explained. To begin with, we examine the boundary condition which determined with the distribution function $f_i^{(0)}$ concerning with density, velocity and internal energy at boundary node. Very small acoustic pressure fluctuation, with same frequency as that of Karman vortex street, is compared with the pressure fluctuation around a circular cylinder. The acoustic sound' propagation velocity shows that acoustic approa ching the upstream, due to the Doppler effect in the uniform flow, slowly propagated. For the do wnstream, on the other hand, it quickly propagates. It is also apparently the size of sound pressure was proportional to the central distance $r^{-1/2}$ of the circular cylinder. The lattice BGK model for compressible fluids is shown to be one of powerful tool for simulation of gas flows.

The present experimental and numerical investigations are performed for the characteristics of transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin- friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of water and glycerine-water solution (44%) with the inner cylinder rotating at speed of 0∼600 nm, respectively. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficient due to the rotation is uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, it is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime.
A rich phenomenon in the dynamics of azimuthal vortices in a circular cylinder caused by the inertial oscillation is investigated numerically at high Reynolds numbers and moderate Rossby numbers. In the actual spin-up flow where both the Ekman circulation and the bottom friction effects are included, the first appearance of a seed vortex is generated by the Ekman boundary-layer on the bottom wall and the subsequent roll-up near the corner bounded by the side wall. The existence of the small vortex then rapidly propagates toward the inviscid region and induces a complicated pattern in the distribution of azimuthal vorticity, i.e. inertial oscillation. The inertial oscillation however does not deteriorate the classical Ekman-pumping model in the time scale larger than that of the oscillatory motion. Motions of single vortex and a pair of vortices are further investigated under a slip boundary-condition on the solid walls. For the case of single vortex, repeated change of the vorticity sign is observed together with typical propagation of inertial waves. For the case of a pair of vortices with a two-step profile in the initial azimuthal velocity, the vortices' movement toward the outer region is resisted by the crescent-shape vortices surrounding the pair. After touching the border between the core and outer regions, the pair vortices weaken very fast.
Vortex methods were originally conceived as a tool to model the evolution of unsteady, incompressible, high Reynolds number flows of engineering interest. Recently various methods have been proposed for simulating the diffusion in vortex methods for two-dimensional incompressible flows. We test the diffusion schemes of vortex methods. In this paper we directly compare the particle strength exchange scheme with the vorticity redistribution scheme in tenus of their accuracy and computational efficiency. Comparisons between both viscous models described are presented for short-time runs of impulsively started flows past a circular cylinder for Reynolds number of 60. The particle strength exchange scheme has been shown more accurate and efficient than the vorticity redistribution scheme.
This study investigates turbulent flow around a square cylinder mounted on a flat surface at high Reynolds number using a large-eddy simulation (LES) model, particularly focusing on vortex streets behind the square cylinder. Total 9 simulation cases with different inflow wind directions, inflow wind speeds, and cylinder widths in the x- and y-directions are considered to examine the effects of inflow wind direction, speed, and cylinder widths on turbulent flow and vortex streets. In the control case, the inflow wind parallel to the x-direction has a maximum speed of $5m\;s^{-1}$ and the width and height of the cylinder are 50 m and 200 m, respectively. In all cases, down-drafts in front of the cylinder and updrafts, wakes, and vortex streets behind the cylinder appear. Low-speed flow below the cylinder height and high-speed flow above it are mixed behind the cylinder, resulting in strong negative vertical turbulent momentum flux at the boundary. Accordingly, the magnitude of the vertical turbulent momentum flux is the largest near the cylinder top. In the case of an inflow wind direction of $45^{\circ}$, the height of the boundary is lower than in other cases. As the inflow wind speed increases, the magnitude of the peak in the vertical profile of mean turbulent momentum flux increases due to the increase in speed difference between the low-speed and high-speed flows. As the cylinder width in the y-direction increases, the height of the boundary increases due to the enhanced updrafts near the top of the cylinder. In addition, the magnitude of the peak of the mean turbulent momentum flux increases because the low-speed flow region expands. Spectral analysis shows that the non-dimensional vortex generation frequency in the control case is 0.2 and that the cylinder width in the y-direction and the inflow wind direction affect the non-dimensional vortex generation frequency. The non-dimensional vortex generation frequency increases as the projected width of the cylinder normal to the inflow direction increases.
Understanding particle-laden flow around cylindrical bodies is essential for the better design of various applications such as filters. In this study, laminar flows around two tandem cylinders and the motions of particles in the flow are numerically investigated at low Reynolds numbers. We aim to reveal the effects of the spacing between cylinders, Reynolds number and particle Stokes number on the characteristics of particle trajectories. When the cylinders are placed close, the unsteady flow inside the inter-cylinder gap at Re = 100 shows a considerable modification. However, the steady recirculation flow in the wake at Re = 10 and 40 shows an insignificant change. The change in the flow structure leads to the variation of particle dispersion pattern, particularly of small Stokes number particles. However, the dispersion of particles with a large Stokes number is hardly affected by the flow structure. As a result, few particles are observed in the cylinder gap regardless of the cylinder spacing and the Reynolds number. The deposition efficiency of the upstream cylinder shows no difference from that of a single cylinder, increasing as the Stokes number increases. However, the deposition on the downstream cylinder is found only at Re = 100 with large spacing. At this time, the deposition efficiency is generally small compared to that of an upstream cylinder, and the deposition location is also changed with no deposited particles near the stagnation point.

In order to clarify the final process of oil consumption, the distribution and flow of oil through each ring were visualized by induced fluorescence method. Motoring and firing test were performed in a single cylinder research engine with transparent cylinder liner. The appropriate calibration techniques were used to solve the unstability of induced light intensity as well as to know the relation of the oil film thickness and output signal. Oil behavior was also observed at dynamic state by high speed CCD camera. By analyzing the oil film thickness converted from the photographed image, it was observed that the main route of oil transport through each ring is the end gap under the usual operating condition, low engine speed and low load condition. Oil film thickness is observed to be irregular and tend to move in a body horizontally at a given piston land. And it is also found that oil flows through oil ring gap so quickly that it can be observed in a single cycle, but it flows so slowly through top and 2nd compression rings that it takes quite a long time to detect the flow.

In this paper, effects of free surface on viscous flow is investigated. Continuity equation coupled with Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically by using an artificial compressibility method[1, 2]. The body-fitted generalized curvilinear coordinate system is employed to deal with arbitrary body shape. The IAF scheme with finite difference method is used to solve the equations, and a diagonal algorithm is applied to time-varying Jacobian matrices for the computational economics. Free surface shape is obtained by applying zero pressure condition to still water surface at each time step. A numerical test is made for larminar flow around a circular cylinder vertically piercing the free surface. Computed flow patterns are largely affected by the existance of free surface in low Reynolds number flows treated in this paper. Free surface causes viscous pressure drag to vary much in depth direction in accordance with the variations of flow pattern.

The aerodynamic characteristics of circular cylinder in a channel are studied to make clear the flow feature by solving the Navier-Stokes equation based on the finite volume method with unstructured grids. Reviews are made on with the vorticity, velocity, dynamic pressure, residual and drag, where the Reynolds numbers are 50 and 100. The flows for $Re{\succeq}50$ shows the vortex shedding in the wake, and the result is the same as the case of moving cylinder. The ground effect of flat bottom results in the growth of vortex, being generated in the upper side of the cylinder and elongated in the rear. As the cylinder approaches to wall, for example 0.6, the cylinder plays as a role of blockage to obstruct the flow between the cylinder and wall. The drag coefficients are compared with others' results to confirm the validity of the present numerical simulation.
