  • In this paper we address the problem of detecting and estimating an unknown narrow band signal in a noise interference environment A new practical band estimation method, yielding good performance even in case of finite-length data, is presented. More specifically, wavelet packet transform is utilized to detect the more accurate time-variant band, then we estimate the power from wavelet filter-coefficients of the respective band. Also, third-order cumulants, and projection cross-correlation (PCC) criterion are utilized to achieve an effective SNR improvement for the time-variant band estimation. In case of time variant band estimation, the PCC method yields better performance than the correlation method.

  • We present an improved transfer matrix algorithm which can be used in solving general n-band effective-mass $Schr{\ddot{o}}dinger$ equation for quantum well structures with arbitrary shaped potential profiles(where n specifies the number of bands explicitly included in the effective-mass equation). In the proposed algorithm, specific formulas are presented for the three-band (the conduction band and the two heavy- and light-hole bands) and two-band (the heavy- and light-hole bands) effective-mass eigensystems. Advantages of the present method can be taken in its simple and unified treatment for general $n{\times}n$ matrix envelope-function equations, which requires relatively smaller computation efforts as compared with existing methods of similar kind. As an illustration of application of the method, numerical computations are performed for a single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well using both the two-band and three-band formulas. The results are compared with those obtained by the conventional variational procedure to assess the validity of the method.

  • It is widely known that the ultra high frequency (UHF) method that detects the electromagnetic wave of the PD pulses in the gas insulated space is one of the most competitive methods for its high sensitivity. From the above point of view, this paper describes the propagation characteristics of GIS PD signals measured with ultra wide band (UWB) GIS PD detecting system in which PD signals are detected into the dual UHF band. The UWB PD detection system consists of the UWB UHF coupler, the UWB low noise amplifier (LNA) and the oscilloscope. The dual bands for PD signals are 0.5-2GHz(full band) and 1-2GHz(high band). As results, propagation characteristics of GIS PD signals were measured in the mock-up GIS bus and it was found that the propagation characteristics of the high band showed a better result in accordance with the infernal configuration of the GIS bus than those of the full band.

  • In this paper Dual Band Log-Periodic Dipole Antenna(DLPDA), which can be used at the Cellular/IMT-2000 band, is proposed. The proposed antenna is composed of 2 of Log-Periodic Dipole Antenna(LPDA) and parasitic elements. To investigate the reliability of the proposed antenna, DLPDA is designed at the cellular/IMT-2000 band and analyzed by using the method of moment, Numerical results are compared with measured results. It is shown that although the antenna length is 70 cm, its radiation characteristics satisfied the design goals of gain, VSWR and beamwidth at the Cellular/IMT-2000 band. From these results, the proposed DLPDA is confirmed as the dual band antenna which can be used at the cellular/IMT-2000 band.

  • The objective of this paper is to determine the suitable spectral bands for monitoring growth status change during a long period. The long-term ground-level reflectance spectra as well as LAI and biomass were obtained in xiaotangshan area, Beijing, 2001. The narrow-band NDVI type spectral indices by all possible two bands were calculated their correlation coefficients R$^2$ with biomass and LAI. The best NDVIs must have higher R$^2$ with both biomass and LAI. The reasonable band centers and band widths were determined by a systematically increasing bandwidth centered over a wavelength. In addition, the first 19 bands of MODIS were simulated and investigated. Each developed spectral indices was then validated by the biomass and LAI time series using the generalized vector angle. It turned out that six new NDVI type indices within 750-1400nm were developed. NDVI(811_10,957_10) and NDVI(962_10,802_10) performed best. No satisfactory conventional NDVI formed by red and NIR bands were found effective. MODIS_NDVI(band19, band17) and MODIS_NDVI(band19, band2) were much better than MODIS_NDVI(band2,band1) for growth monitoring.

  • As satellite communications services are showing gradual growth, so are the needs for dual or tri-band antennas greater than performance of conventional single-band antennas. In this paper, a simultaneously operable tri-band antenna for SATCOM(Satellite Communications) is proposed. It is different from conventional methods of implementing tri-band through replaceable horns, while it is designed with a tri-band feed assembly composed of corrugated and dielectric horns and reflectors of gregorian type to transmit and receive tri-band of X, Ku and Ka band simultaneously. And simulated and measured values were compared and analyzed for characteristics of the proposed antenna. In the results, radiation patterns of the proposed tri-band antenna were close to the simulated ones and also met specifications.

  • Molecules always show broad absorption band envelopes, and this results from the vibrational properties of bonds. The width of an absorption band can have an important influence on the color of a dye. A narrow band imparts a bright, spectrally pure color to the dye, whereas a broad band can give the same hue, but with a much duller appearance. Typically, half-band widths of cyanine dyes are about 25nm compared to value of over 50nm for typical merocyanine dyes. Thus, cyanine dyes are exceptionally bright. The factors influencing the width of an absorption band can be understood with reference to the Morse curves. The width of the absorption band depends on how closely the bond order of the molecules in the first excited state resembles that in the ground state. We have quantitatively evaluated the "molecular structure-absorption band shape" relationship of dye molecules by means of Pariser-Parr-Pople Molecular Orbital Method(PPP-MO).

  • In this paper, we propose a new method for artificial bandwidth extension of narrow-band signal in frequency domain. In the proposed method, a narrow-band signal is decomposed into excitation signal and spectral envelope, which are extended independently in frequency domain. The excitation signal is extended such that low-band harmonic structure is maintained in high band, and the spectral envelope is extended based on sub-band energy using NMF. Finally, the spectral phase is determined based on signal correlation between frames in time domain, resulting in the final wide-band signal. The subjective evaluation verified that the wide-band signal generated by the proposed method has a higher quality than the original narrow-band signal.

  • Although radar target signatures(RTS), such as range profiles have played an important role for target recognition in the X-band radar, they would be less effective when a target is designed to have low radar cross section(RCS). Recently, a number of research groups have conducted the studies on the RTS in the VHF-band where such targets can be better detected than in the X-band. However, there is a lack of work carried out on the mathematical description of the VHF-band RTS. In this paper, chirplet decomposition is employed for modeling of the VHF-band RTS and its performance is compared with that of existing scattering center model generally used for the X-band. In addition, the discriminative signal analysis is performed by chirplet parameterization of range profiles from in an ISAR image. Because the chirplet decomposition takes long computation time, its fast form is further proposed for enhanced practicality.
