An attempt was made to apply digital image correlation (DIC) strain analysis to in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of bending deformation to quantify local strain distribution inside a ZnMgAl-alloy coating in deformation. Interstitial-free steel sheets were hot-dipped in a Zn-3Mg-6Al (mass%) alloy melt at 400 ℃ for 2 s. The specimens were deformed using a miniature-sized 4-point bending test machine inside the SEM chamber. The observed in situ SEM images were used for DIC strain analysis. The hot-dip ZnMgAl-alloy coating exhibited a solidification microstructure composed of a three-phase eutectic of fine Al (fcc), Zn (hcp), and Zn2Mg phases surrounding the primary solidified Al phases. The relatively coarsened Zn2Mg phases were locally observed inside the ZnMgAl-alloy coating. The DIC strain analysis revealed that the strain was localized in the primary solidified Al phases and fine eutectic microstructure around the Zn2Mg phase. The results indicated high deformability of the multi-phase microstructure of the ZnMgAl-alloy coating.

The purpose of this study was to propose a new approach for quantifying in situ rock mass damage, which would include a degree-of-damage and the degraded strength of a rock mass, along with its prediction based on real-time Acoustic Emission (AE) observations. The basic approach for quantifying in-situ rock mass damage is to derive the normalized value of measured AE energy with the maximum AE energy, called the degree-of-damage in this study. With regard to estimation of the AE energy, an AE crack source location algorithm of the Wigner-Ville Distribution combined with Biot's wave dispersion model, was applied for more reliable AE crack source localization in a rock mass. In situ AE wave attenuation was also taken into account for AE energy correction in accordance with the propagation distance of an AE wave. To infer the maximum AE energy, fractal theory was used for scale-independent AE energy estimation. In addition, the Weibull model was also applied to determine statistically the AE crack size under a jointed rock mass. Subsequently, the proposed methodology was calibrated using an in situ test carried out in the Underground Research Tunnel at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. This was done under a condition of controlled incremental cyclic loading, which had been performed as part of a preceding study. It was found that the inferred degree-of-damage agreed quite well with the results from the in situ test. The methodology proposed in this study can be regarded as a reasonable approach for quantifying rock mass damage.
In situ observations from the Wind spacecraft that statistically analyzed the solar wind proton at 1 AU has indicated that the measured proton temperature anisotropies seems to be regulated by the oblique instabilities (the mirror and oblique firehose). This result is in contradiction with the prediction of linear kinetic theory that the ion-cyclotron (for ${\beta}_{\parallel}$ < 2) and parallel firehose (for ${\beta}_{\parallel}$ <10) would dominate over the oblique instabilities. Various kinds of physical mechanisms have been suggested to explain this disagreement between the observations and linear theory. All of the suggestions consider the solar wind as a unoform magnetized plasma. However the real space environment is replete with the intermediate spatio-temporal scale variations associated with various physical quantities, such as the magnetic field intensity and the solar wind density. In this paper we present that the pervasive intermediate-scale temporal variation of the local magnetic field intensity can lead to the modification of the proton temperature anisotropy versus beta inverse correlation for temperature-anisotropy-driven instabilities. By means of quasilinear kinetic theory involving such temporal variation, we construct the simulated solar wind proton data distribution associated the magnetic fluctuations in (${\beta}_{\parallel}$, $T_{\perp}/T_{\parallel}$) space. It is shown that the theoretically simulated proton distribution and a general trend of the enhanced fluctuations bounded by the oblique instabilities are consistent with in situ observations. Furthermore, the measure magnetic compressibility can be accounted for by the magnetic spectral signatures of the unstable modes.
In order to elucidate the machinability of lead brass, orthogonal machining experiment was conducted in SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) equipped with a micro-machining device at a cutting speed of $7{\mu}m/s$ for brass containing 0.2 to 3wt% Pb. The microfactors (i.e., shear angle, contact length between chip and tool) were determined by in-situ observations. Machinability of brass containing lead is discussed in terms of the microfactors and the cutting resistant force tested by lathe cutting. The dynamic behavior of the chip formation of lead brass during the machining process was examined: The chips of lead brass form as a shear angle type. The shear angle increases with the content of lead in (6:4) brass. The pronounced effect of lead on the contact length between chip and tool was observed above 1% Pb. The cutting resistant force tested by lathe decreases remarkably with the lead content in brass. The observed microfactors are in close relation to the tested resistant force in macromachining.
Reliable estimation of compressive as well as tensile in-situ stresses is critical in the design and analysis of underground structures and openings in rocks. Kaiser effect technique, which uses acoustic emission from rock specimens under cyclic load, is well established for the estimation of in-situ compressive stresses. This paper investigates the Kaiser effect on marble specimens under cyclic uniaxial compressive as well as cyclic uniaxial tensile conditions. The tensile behavior was studied by means of Brazilian tests. Each specimen was tested by applying the load in four loading cycles having magnitudes of 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of the peak stress. The experimental results confirm the presence of Kaiser effect in marble specimens under both compressive and tensile loading conditions. Kaiser effect was found to be more dominant in the first two loading cycles and started disappearing as the applied stress approached the peak stress, where felicity effect became dominant instead. This behavior was observed to be consistent under both compressive and tensile loading conditions and can be applied for the estimation of in-situ rock stresses as a function of peak rock stress. At a micromechanical level, Kaiser effect is evident when the pre-existing stress is smaller than the crack damage stress and ambiguous when pre-existing stress exceeds the crack damage stress. Upon reaching the crack damage stress, the cracks begin to propagate and coalesce in an unstable manner. Hence acoustic emission observations through Kaiser effect analysis can help to estimate the crack damage stresses reliably thereby improving the efficiency of design parameters.
Soil nailing technique is being widely used for stabilization of vertical cuts because of its economic, environment friendly and speedy construction. Global stability and lateral displacement are the two important stability criteria for the soil nail walls. The primary objective of the present study is to evaluate soil nail wall stability criteria under the influence of in-situ soil variability. Finite element based numerical experiments are performed in accordance with the methodology of $2^3$ factorial design of experiments. Based on the analysis of the observations from numerical experiments, two regression models are developed, and used for reliability analyses of global stability and lateral displacement of the soil nail wall. A 10 m high prototype soil nail wall is considered for better understanding and to highlight the practical implications of the present study. Based on the study, lateral displacements beyond 0.10% of vertical wall height and variability of in-situ soil parameters are found to be critical from the stability criteria considerations of the soil nail wall.

Pulsed Current Sintering (PCS) process possesses some problems that need to be resolved. We, therefore aims at understanding phenomena of PCS process by presenting some basic data on in situ sintering behavior of PCS. Special graphite mold equipped with thermo couple and electrodes were designed to measure the temperature, electric current and voltage inside the powder during PCS process. We apply three types of raw materials, especially for ZnO as semiconductor, $Al_2O_3$ as non-conductor and WC as good conductor. The electric current and voltage were measured for each powder during PCS process. In addition, their electric resistance properties were calculated.
Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process occurring in a wide range of astrophysical, heliospheric and laboratory plasmas. This process alters magnetic topology and triggers rapid conversion of magnetic energy into thermal heating and nonthermal particle acceleration. Efforts to understand the physics of magnetic reconnection have been made across multiple disciplines using remote observations of solar flares and in-situ measurements of geomagnetic storms and substorms as well as laboratory and numerical experiments. This review focuses on the progress achieved with solar flare observations in which most reconnection-related signatures could be resolved in both space and time. The emphasis is on various observable emission features in the low solar atmosphere which manifest the coronal magnetic reconnection because these two regions are magnetically connected to each other. The research and application perspectives of solar magnetic reconnection are briefly discussed and compared with those in other plasma environments.
Traditionally, surface energy fluxes are obtained by model simulations or empirical equations with auxiliary meteorological data. These methods may not effectively represent the surface heat fluxes in a regional scale due to scene variability. On the other hand, remote sensing has the advantage to acquire data of a large area in an instantaneous view. The remotely sensed data can be further used to retrieve surface radiation and heat fluxes over a large area. In this study, the airborne and satellite images in conjunction with meteorological data and ground observations were used to estimate the surface heat fluxes over Taiwan's Chaiyi Plain. The results indicate that surface heat fluxes can be properly determined from both airborne and satellite images. The correlation coefficient of surface heat fluxes with in situ corresponding observations is over 0.60. We also observe that the remotely sensed data can efficiently provide a long term monitoring of surface heat fluxes over Taiwan's Chaiyi Plain.
Ground subsidence in urban areas is mainly caused by anthropogenic factors such as excessive groundwater extraction and underground infrastructure development in the subsurface composed of soft materials. Global Navigation Satellite System data with high temporal resolution have been widely used to measure surface displacements accurately. However, these point-based terrestrial measurements with the low spatial resolution are somewhat limited in observing two-dimensional continuous surface displacements over large areas. The synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) technique can construct relatively high spatial resolution surface displacement information with accuracy ranging from millimeters to centimeters. Although constellation operations of SAR satellites have improved the revisit cycle, the temporal resolution of space-based observations is still low compared to in-situ observations. In this study, we evaluate the extraction of a time-series of surface displacement in Incheon Metropolitan City, South Korea, using the small baseline subset technique implemented using the commercial software, Gamma. For this purpose, 24 COSMO-SkyMed X-band SAR observations were collected from July 12, 2011, to August 27, 2012. The time-series surface displacement results were improved by reducing random phase noise, correcting residual phase due to satellite orbit errors, and mitigating nonlinear atmospheric phase artifacts. The perpendicular baseline of the collected COSMO-SkyMed SAR images was set to approximately 2-300 m. The surface displacement related to the ground subsidence was detected approximately 1 cm annually around a few Incheon Subway Line 2 route stations. The sufficient coherence indicates that the satellite orbit has been precisely managed for the interferometric processing.
