  • Soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe; SCN) is an important soybean pest and the use of resistant cultivars is the effective method to reduce or eliminate SCN damage. However, breeding for SCN resistance is difficult and expensive by the oligogenic nature of the resistance and genetic variability in the pathogen. Fortunately, SCN resistance loci, rhg1 and Rhg4 are generally accepted as a necessity for the development of resistant genotypes using any source of resistance. In this study, resistance of 44 Korean soybean cultivars to SCN was tested using two molecular markers. Seonheukkong and Pokwangkong were the homozygous to rhg1 locus. Seven cultivars were susceptible to SCN based on Satt309 marker linked rhg1 locus. All Korean cultivars estimated in this study were recessive homozygous to Rhg4 locus and were susceptible in the PCR reaction using primer 548/563 linked to the Rhg4 locus conferring resistance to SCN race 3. Among 44 cultivars estimated, seven cultivars were susceptible to SCN in both Satt309 and primer 548/563 markers. Based on both Satt309 and primer 548/563 markers, there is no resistant cultivar to SCN in Korea. Therefore, SCN resistant cultivars need to be developed in the future. These two markers can be used for improving SCN resistant cultivars.

  • $TiO_2$-Ni inverse catalysts were prepared using atomic layer deposition (ALD) process and catalytic $CO_2$ reforming of methane (CRM) reaction over catalysts (either bare Ni or $TiO_2$ coated-Ni particles) were performed using a continuous flow reactor at $800^{\circ}C$. $TiO_2$-Ni inverse catalyst showed higher catalytic reactivity at initial stage of CRM reactions at $800^{\circ}C$ comparing to bare Ni catalysts. Moreover, catalytic activity of $TiO_2$/Ni catalyst was kept high during 13 hrs of the CRM reactions at $800^{\circ}C$, whereas deactivation of bare Ni surface was started within 1hr under same conditions. The results of surface analysis using SEM, XPS, and Raman showed that deposition of graphitic carbon was effectively suppressed in a presence of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles on Ni surface, thereby improving catalytic reactivity and stability of $TiO_2$/Ni catalytic systems. We suggest that utilizing decoration effect of metal catalyst with oxide nanoaprticles is of great potential to develop metal-based catalysts with high stability and reactivity.

  • Significant improvements in the switching voltage distribution are required for the development of unipolar resistive memory devices using $MnO_x$ thin films. The $V_{set}$ of the as-grown $MnO_x$ film ranged from 1 to 6.2 V, whereas the $V_{set}$ of the oxygen-annealed film ranged from 2.3 to 3 V. An excess of oxygen in an $MnO_x$ film leads to an increase in $Mn^{4+}$ content at the $MnO_x$ film surface with a subsequent change in the $Mn^{4+}/Mn^{3+}$ ratio at the surface. This was attributed to the change in $Mn^{4+}/Mn^{3+}$ ratios at the $MnO_x$ surface and to grain growth. Oxygen annealing is a possible solution for improving the switching voltage distribution of $MnO_x$ thin films. In addition, crystalline $MnO_x$ can help stabilize the $V_{set}$ and $V_{reset}$ distribution in memory switching in a Ti/$MnO_x$/Pt structure. The improved uniformity was attributed not only to the change of the crystallinity but also to the redox reaction at the interface between Ti and $MnO_x$.

  • Modification of clay surface was attempted by treating the clay with bis[(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)tetra sulfide (TSS) to raise the hydrophobicity and to induce a chemical reaction between the clay and the high temperature vulcanization-type silicone rubber matrix with purpose of improving the compatibility between the components, and thereby Na-$MMTS_4$ and Fe-$MMTS_4$ were synthesized by treating Na-MMT and Fe-MMT with TSS, respectively. Silicone rubber/clay composites were prepared by compounding the clays with silicone rubber. Thermal stability and mechanical properties were evaluated as a function of the clay types and the surface modification.

  • In the wet master batch process, process oil is used to improve the workability of silica-SBR. The process oil expands the polymer and provides lubrication to soften the stiff rubber chain. However, addition of excess process oil can interfere in the crosslinking reaction between rubber molecules and reduce the crosslinking density of silica-SBR. Controlling the amount of process oil is an important aspect for properly controlling the workability and crosslinking density of silica-SBR. In this study, silica-SBR was prepared by adjusting the amount of process oil to confirm its effect on silicaSBR. Vulcanization characteristics of silica-SBR were examined using a moving die rheometer. Dynamic viscoelasticity was measured using a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer, and the mechanical properties were investigated using the universal testing machine according to ASTM D412. As a result, all silica-SBR compounds with 10 to 40 phr of process oil have effects of improving the processability and the silica dispersibility. Also, the optimum condition was determined when 10 phr of processed oil was added because the abrasion resistance was improved 65% compared to that at 40 phr.

  • Orthorhombic LiMnO$_2$ was synthesized by solid-state reaction using LiOH$.$H$_2$O and Mn$_2$O$_3$ as starting material. Its electrochemical properties as cathode in lithium batteries were examined. X-ray diffraction revealed that the LiMnO$_2$ compound showed a well-defined orthorhombic phase of a space group with Pmnm. The capacity of LiMnO$_2$ agreed well with its specific surface area and grinding treatment was effective in improving cycling performance. For lithium polymer battery applications, the LiMnO$_2$ cell was characterized electrochemically by charge-discharge experiments. And the relationship between the characteristics of powder and electrochemical properties was studied in this research. A maximum discharge capacity of 160-170mAhg$^{-1}$ for LiMnO$_2$/Li cell was achieved

  • The electrical and physical charateristics of aluminum oxide and Pt thin films on it, deposited by reactive sputtering and DC magnetron sputtering, respectively, were analysed with increasing annealing temperature(400~80$0^{\circ}C$) by four point probe, SEM and XRD. Under $600^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature, aluminum oxide had the properties of improving Pt adhesion to SiO$_2$and insulation without chemical reaction to Pt thin films and the resistivity of Pt thin finns was improved. But these properties of aluminum oxide and Pt thin finns on it were degraded over $700^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature because aluminum oxide was changed into metal aluminum and then reacted to Pt thin films deposited on it. The thermal characteristics of Pt micro heater were analysed with Pt-RTD integrated on the same substrate. In the analysis of properties of Pt micro heater. active area was smaller size, Pt micro heater had better thermal characteristics. Temperature of Pt micro heater fabricated on membrane was up to 34$0^{\circ}C$ with 1.2watts of the heating power due to reduction of the external thermal loss.

  • PCR(Polymerase chain reaction) is a technique to replicate and amplify a desired part of DNA. It is used in various aspects such as DNA fingerprint analysis and rare DNA amplification of an extinct animal. Especially in the medical diagnosis field, it provides various measurement methods at the molecular level such as genetic diagnosis, and is a basic tool for molecular diagnostics. The internal shape of the plastic vial tube for PCR analysis used in the DNA detection process, and the surface roughness and internal cleanliness can affect detection and discrimination results. The plastic vial tube demanded by the developer of the PCR analysis equipment should be changed to a structure that eliminates the residual washing solution in the washing process to ensure the internal cleanliness. Thus the internal structure and the internal surface design for improving the PCR amplification efficiency are key issues to develop the plastic vial tube for the DNA detection process.

  • Silicon addition in titanium alloys generally results in solid solution hardening by silicon itself and precipitation hardening by titanium silicides. The morphology and distribution of the titanium silicides depend upon the alloy chemistry or the heat treatment condition, and play an important role in improving the mechanical properties of the alloys. In this study, the morphology and crystallographic characteristics of the titanium silicides in the Ti-Fe-Si alloy system were studied. Three types of silicides were found in the alloys; (1) interconnected chain-like silicides at grain boundary, (2) coarse silicides over im, (3) fine silicides smaller than 0.2m. Ti3Si was dominant in cast + HIP condition while Ti5Si3 was dominant in as-cast state. It is recognized that $Ti_5Si_3$$\rightarrow$$Ti_3Si$ transition occurred by the peritectoid reaction and it may be promoted by the pressure during HIP. However, in the case of the fine silicides, $Ti_3Si$ and $Ti_5Si_3$ were found simultaneously even after HIP. Such a fine silicide was found to have a crystallographic orientation relationship with matrix.
