  • For a method improving fractal image segmentation which is a new application of fractal image coding, YST scheme have proposed an image segmentation scheme using labeling based on periodic points of pixel transformation and error-correction of labels by iterating fractal transformation. The scheme generates the high quality segmentation, however, it has the redundancy in the process of labeling and correction of labels. To solve this problem, we propose a labeling algorithm based on orbit of pixel transformation and restricted condition on iterating process of fractal transformation.

  • In the text classification domain, labeling the training documents is an expensive process because it requires human expertise and is a tedious, time-consuming task. Therefore, it is important to reduce the manual labeling of training documents while improving the text classifier. Selective sampling, a form of active learning, reduces the number of training documents that needs to be labeled by examining the unlabeled documents and selecting the most informative ones for manual labeling. We apply this methodology to Naive Bayes, a text classifier renowned as a successful method in text classification. One of the most important issues in selective sampling is to determine the criterion when selecting the training documents from the large pool of unlabeled documents. In this paper, we propose two measures that would determine this criterion : the Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) and the entropy measure. The experimental results, using Renters 21578 corpus, show that this proposed learning method improves Naive Bayes text classifier more than the existing ones.

  • Plagiarism detection is increasingly exploiting text alignment. Text alignment involves extracting the plagiarism passages in a pair of the suspicious document and its source document. The heuristics have achieved excellent performance in text alignment. However, the further improvements of the heuristic methods mainly depends more on the experiences of experts, which makes the heuristics lack of the abilities for continuous improvements. To address this problem, machine learning maybe a proper way. Considering the position relations and the context of text segments pairs, we formalize the text alignment task as a problem of sequence labeling, improving the current methods at the model level. Especially, this paper proposes to use the probabilistic graphical model to tag the observed sequence of pairs of text segments. Hence we present the sequence labeling approach for text alignment in plagiarism detection based on Conditional Random Fields. The proposed approach is evaluated on the PAN@CLEF 2012 artificial high obfuscation plagiarism corpus and the simulated paraphrase plagiarism corpus, and compared with the methods achieved the best performance in PAN@CLEF 2012, 2013 and 2014. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the state of the art methods.

  • In this study, we applied ENERWATER to evaluate the energy consumption labeling of wastewater treatment plants in Korea using the Korea sewerage statistics data. The results showed that the energy label status was excellent in the SBR process for small and medium-scale wastewater treatment plants and the A2O process for large-scale wastewater treatment plants. The energy labeling of wastewater treatment plants of 50,000 tons capacity was excellent. The statuses of metropolitan cities and Jeollanam-do province were excellent. We analyzed the effects of renewable energy on wastewater treatment plants' energy consumption and found out that digestion gas for large-scale plants and photovoltaic energy for small-scale plants were effective in improving energy labeling. In addition, we compared the energy labels of four wastewater treatment plants in "Z" city and wastewater treatment plant "X" had the best energy label, and the wastewater treatment plants "V" and "Y" had to be selected as priorities for the energy diagnosis and improvement project. In a comprehensive conclusion, the applicability of ENERWATER was confirmed based on sewage statistics data and labeling can be used to set priorities for the energy diagnosis and improvement project.

  • To investigate recognition and use of nutrition labeling on eating-out menus, self-recorded questionnaire was surveyed for 641 consumers who visited hamburger and pizza restaurants in Daejeon from May to July, 2010. Subjects were women of 51.3% and 92.9% aged 10s or 20s. Use frequency of hamburger and pizza restaurants was 2-3 times a month with 56.9%. Of subjects 41.0% knew nutrition labeling mandates of eating-out menus, 64.6% have seen nutrition labels of menus, and 44.5% read nutrition labels when purchasing. Among subjects who read nutrition labels, 67.0% (29.8% of total) referred to it when menu purchase and 60.4% (26.9% of total) experienced changing menu. The ratio of reading nutrition labels was different among gender, diet trial frequency and monthly eating-out cost. Reasons for not reading labels were "not interested in" or "never heard about" for 57.0%, and "not noticeable" for 28.7%. The ratio who read correctly all 3 pieces of information, such as calorie amount, daily value, and way of using daily value was 39.2%. Average number of correct reading was 2.13, which was different among gender, marital status, having children, diet trial frequency, monthly eating-out cost, the restaurants use frequency, and accompanying person. Many subjects wanted to be additionally provided with cholesterol and transfat. Therefore, practical and differentiated consumer educations considering consumer features are required for better nutrition labeling usage. Government's regulatory efforts and voluntary effort of eating-out companies, such as adding nutrients on labels and improving labeling places, are also necessary.

  • Image labeling must be preceded in order to perform object detection, and this task is considered a significant burden in building a deep learning model. Tens of thousands of images need to be trained for building a deep learning model, and human labelers have many limitations in labeling these images manually. In order to overcome these difficulties, this study proposes a method to perform object detection without significant performance degradation, even though labeling some images rather than the entire image. Specifically, in this study, low-resolution oriental painting images are converted into high-quality images using a super-resolution algorithm, and the effect of SSIM and PSNR derived in this process on the mAP of object detection is analyzed. We expect that the results of this study can contribute significantly to constructing deep learning models such as image classification, object detection, and image segmentation that require efficient image labeling.

  • This study examined consumer perception and use on labeling of cooking utensils made of plastic and glass to get information about improving the labeling. The data were collected from 505 adults in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Incheon, and Gwangju. The data were analyzed by SPSS Windows V.14.0. Frequencies, t tests, one-way analysis of variance, and Duncan's multiple range tests were carried out. Many respondents checked off 'precautions in use' more than any other notice when they purchased the cooking utensils made of plastic and glass. Respondents were dissatisfied with the letter size and intelligibility of foreign language on the labeling. Most respondents preferred 'tag' for most cooking utensils made of plastic and glass. In addition, on necessity of precautions for each category of plastic cooking utensils, frying pans, plastic baskets, plastic water buckets, plastic seasoning bottles, the frying pan showed the highest need for 'do not place close to the fire'. Plastic cups and plastic containers showed the highest in 'whether utensils could be used in the microwave oven and accompanying precautions', and plastic cutting board showed the highest in 'matters relating to washing before use.' In the case of cooking utensils made of glass, 'precaution on shock' was the highest for glass cups and mugs and 'whether utensils could be used in the microwave oven and accompanying precautions' was the highest for glass pans, dishes and containers.

  • In recent years, Korean government has focused on improving the environmental impact of products in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to achieve their energy goals. The government has been conducting the following polices such as green procurement inducement and certification system. After carbon labeling was conducted in 2009, among a total of 1,065 items, 97 building materials have been given a certification: finishing materials items have the highest weight (56%). The increase in the certification numbers shows that there has been considerable technical efforts in the building material industry. At the awareness of carbon label and purchase of low carbon product, however, customers are aware of carbon labeling but the purchasing rate of carbon product is low. In this paper, we suggest that low carbon activities must also be considered in order to create client value by adding the concept of ecological efficiency. The objective of this study to measurer the eco-efficiency of carbon labeled building materials on the basis of environmental aspects of the product with the perspective of economy for purchasing the excellent products.

  • It is hard to prepare sufficient training data for speech emotion recognition due to the difficulty of emotion labeling. In this paper, we apply transfer learning with large-scale training data for speech recognition on a transformer-based model to improve the performance of speech emotion recognition. In addition, we propose a method to utilize context information without decoding by multi-task learning with speech recognition. According to the speech emotion recognition experiments using the IEMOCAP dataset, our model achieves a weighted accuracy of 70.6 % and an unweighted accuracy of 71.6 %, which shows that the proposed method is effective in improving the performance of speech emotion recognition.

  • Listening comprehension is an integrative and creative process of interaction through which listeners receive speakers' production of linguistic or non-linguistic knowledge. Compared with reading comprehension, it may arouse difficulties and thus impose more burdens on foreign learners. The Audio-Lingual Method focused primarily on speaking. Mimicry, repetition, rote memory, and transformation drills actually interfered with listening comprehension. So learners lost interest and were not highly motivated. Improving listening comprehension requires continual attentiveness and interest. Listening skill can be extended systematically only when students are frequently exposed to a wide range of listening materials with an affective, cultural, social, and psycholinguistic approach. Therefore, teachers should help students learn how to comprehend intactly the overall meaning of intended messages. The literature on teaching listening skill suggests various useful activities: TPR, dictation, role playing, singing, picture recognition, completion, prediction, seeking specific information, summarizing, labeling, humor, jokes, cartoons, media, and so on. Practical classroom teaching necessitates a systematic procedure in which students should take part in meaningful tasks/activities. In addition to this, learners must practice listening comprehension trough a self-study process.
