This paper presents an active and reactive power compensator for the wind power system with squirrel-cage induction generator. The output power of a wind power system changes irregularly according to the variation of wind speed. The developed system is able to continuously compensate the active and reactive power. The 3-phase inverter operates for the compensation of reactive power, while the DC/DC converter with super-capacitors operates for the compensation of active power. The operational feasibility of the proposed model was verified by simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC and the feasibility of hardware implementation was confirmed by experimental works with a scaled hardware model. The proposed compensator can be expected that developed system may be used to compensated the abrupt power variation due to sudden change of wind speed or sudden power-drop by tower effect. It can be also applied for the distributed generation and the Micro-Grid.

This paper proposes a new configuration of bidirectional intelligent semiconductor transformer with rating of 1.9kV/127V, 2kVA. The proposed transformer consists of high-voltage high-frequency AC-DC rectifier, and low-voltage DC-DC and DC-AC converters. The operational feasibility of proposed transformer was verified by computer simulation with PSCAD/EMTDC software. Based on the simulation results, a hardware prototype with rating of 1.9kV/127V, 2kVA was built and tested in the lab to confirm the feasibility of hardware implementation. Using three units of this transformer, a 3-phase transformer with rating of 3.3kV/220V, 6kVA can be built.
Demand side management (DSM) is the planning and implementation of those utility designed to influence customer use of electricity in ways that will produce desired changes in the utility's load shape. It is conspicuous that the peak load control of DSM is efficiently adopted. In this paper, the package type air conditioner(A/C) mounted radio controlled switch. During the summer of 1990 KEPCO conducted tests in Seoul areas to determine the economic feasibility of interrupting A/C units for short periods of time during peak load periods. These tests were performed between July 30 and September 20 and were limited to the hours of between 1 and 6 p.m. These tests indicated that each A/C contributes approximately 4.5kW to the system peak and can be switched off 10 minutes out of each 1/2 hour without causing the customer any discomfort. Switching each A/C off for 10 minutes out of each 1/2 hour results in a peak load demand reduction of one kW per unit.

There are two types of expensive measuring instruments currently on the market shape measurement and roundness measurement instruments. As they are very expensive, from tens of millions to more than 200 million won, buying them is economically burdensome for small companies or individuals. Therefore, in order to integrate the shape and roundness measurements into a single transfer device, this study aimed to reduce the trial and error by 3D modeling and simulation, and we confirmed the feasibility of operation. Based on these outcomes, a prototype hybrid measuring instrument was fabricated. As a result of performance evaluation and comparative evaluation, we verified the feasibility of implementation and application of the hybrid measuring instrument.

In the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, devices communicate autonomously with applications in the Internet. A significant aspect of IoT that makes it stand apart from present-day networked devices and applications is a) the very large number of devices, produced by diverse makers and used by an even more diverse group of users; b) the applications residing and functioning in what were very private sanctums of life e.g. the car, home, and the people themselves. Since these diverse devices require high-level security, an operational model for an IoT system is required, which has built-in security. We have proposed the societal model as a simple operational model. The basic concept of the model is borrowed from human society - there will be infants, the weak and the handicapped who need to be protected by guardians. This natural security mechanism works very well for IoT networks which seem to have inherently weak security mechanisms. In this paper, we discuss the requirements of the societal model and examine its feasibility by doing a proof-of-concept implementation.

In order to make cognitive radio systems a practical technology to be deployed in real-world scenarios, the core Software Defined Radio (SDR) systems must meet the stringent requirements of the target application, especially in terms of performance and energy consumption for mobile platforms. In this paper we present a feasibility study of hardware acceleration as an energy-efficient implementation for SDR. We identified the amplifier function from the Software Communication Architecture (SCA) for hardware acceleration since it is one of the functions called for most frequently and it requires intensive floating-point computation. Then, we used the Virtex5 Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to perform a comparison between compiler floating-point support and the on-chip floating-point support. By enabling the on-chip floating-point unit (FPU), we obtained as high as a 2X speedup and 50% of the overall energy reduction. We achieved this with an increase of the power consumption by no more than 0.68%. This demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed approach.
As power system grows more complex and power demands increase, the fault current tends to gradually increase. In the near future, the fault current will exceed a circuit breaker rating for some substations, which is an especially important issue in the Seoul metropolitan area because of its highly meshed configuration. Currently, the Korean power system is regulated by changing the 154kV system configuration from a loop connection to a radial system, by splitting the bus where load balance can be achieved, and by upgrading the circuit breaker rating. A development project applying 154kV Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) to 154kV transmission systems is proceeding with implementation slated for after 2010. In this paper, the expected price of SFCL in order to assure the economic feasibility is evaluated comparing with upgrading cost of ciui.1 breakers. The results show that the SFCL should be developed under seven times of price of circuit breaker to be competitive against upgrading circuit breakers.
Despite the successful launch of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 broadcasting worldwide, broadcasters are facing obstacles in constructing void-less large-scale single-frequency networks (SFNs). The bottleneck is the absence of decent on-channel repeater (OCR) solutions necessary for SFNs. In the real world, OCRs suffer from the maleficent feedback interference (FI) problem, which overwhelms the desired input signal. Moreover, the undesired multipaths between studio-linked transmitters and the OCR deteriorate the forward signals' quality as well. These problems crucially restrict the feasibility of conventional OCR systems, arousing the strong need for cost-worthy advanced OCR solutions. This paper presents an ATSC 3.0-specific solution of advanced OCR that solves the FI problem and refines the input signal. To this end, the FI canceler and channel equalizer functionalities are carefully implemented into the OCR system. The presented OCR system is designed to be fully compliant with the ATSC 3.0 specifications and performs a fast and efficient signal processing by exploiting the specific frame structure. The real product of ATSC 3.0 OCR is fabricated as well, and its feasibility is verified via field and laboratory experiments. The implemented solution is installed at a commercial on-air site and shown to provide substantial coverage gain in practice.

In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of functional programming in the Scala language. The main issue is to what extent Scala is able to handle major properties of functional programming such as lambda expression, high-order functions, generic types, algebraic data types, and monads. For this purpose, we implement an interpreter of an imperative language. In this implementation, the same functional programming techniques are applied to both Haskell and Scala languages, and then these two versions of implementations are compared and analyzed. The abstract syntax tree of an imperative language is expressed as algebraic data types with generics and enum classes in Scala, and the state transition of imperative languages is implemented by using state monad. Extension and given, new features of Scala, are used as well.

At the present time, interest in hydrogen is increasingly growing worldwide to tackle climate change. Korea also takes an action by announcing the first hydrogen economy implementation basic plan with the import targets of 22.9 million tons of hydrogen from oversea in 2050. To achieve this plan, it is very essential to establish an overseas hydrogen supply chain. In this paper, the study estimates the import price for hydrogen into basic scenario and comprehensive scenario, and also analyses economic feasibility considering price of the each technology.
