  • Impedance based monitoring technique was investigated to evaluate the damage occurring in wind turbine blade. In this study, PVDF film piezo sensors were patched on the 10 kW wind turbine blade, and impedance was measured over the frequency range of 1~200 MHz under fatigue loading. With applying fatigue loads on the blade, change in maximum deflection of the blade and local strain values could be obtained from the strain gages attached on the blade, and difference of the impedance signatures was also observed. From these data, it could be found that local damage or geometrical change in the blade structure happened. To quantitatively compare the impedance signature patterns, a statistical algorithm, scalar damage metric M was used. It was calculated from the impedance signatures considering fatigue loads and location of the sensors. The metric values were compared to correlate the metrics with damage in the blade.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of a defective elliptical aluminum plate are analyzed by three different eddy current testing probes; T/R, T/T, and Impedance probes. The analysis was done by 3D finite element method, and the impedance change of real and imaginary voltage values were analyzed.

  • Human feels kinesthetic sense in response to the force acted on him. In order to represent kinesthetic sense, a force is analyzed as mechanical impedance (i.e., stiffness or damping) and implemented by active impedance control. In this research, a 3-dimensional arm motion generator is developed to present various mechanical impedance characteristics to an operator. An introduction of virtual reality provides not only a visual effect in virtual environment but also the change in force synchronized with the visual effect in real time.

  • Assessment of setting process of concrete is important as it provides useful information to schedule concreting work in construction site. Electrical impedance measurement method, which utilizes the change of electrical resistance of concrete, has been applied to assess setting process of cement-based materials. However, the applicability of the method has been demonstrated only for cement paste and mortar. The main purpose of this research is to develop the electrical impedance based setting process assessment for concrete. To this end, electrical impedance response model for concrete should be developed in advance since it is essential to estimate the electrical resistance of concrete from measured impedance response. The electrical resistance of concrete is a key parameter for the setting process assessment. In this study electrical impedance responses of the concrete in setting process are measured and analyzed. Thereby, an electrical impedance response model of the liquid state concrete is developed and schematically validated.

  • Microstructure and mechanical properties of most steels change by heat treat treatment. Such variation of stucture and properties of steel cause an impedance change on electromagnetic induction coil. The objective of this study is, by searching the relationship between the mechanical property or microstructural changes and impedance value of induction coil, to examine the applicablity of a monitoring the heat treated condition of products nondestructively.

  • To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, we applied impedance spectroscopy to analysis on OLED degradation mechanism by monitoring impedance change during constant voltage aging, and modeling OLED with lumped circuit elements. Change in each element value was used to explain charge accumulation and field redistribution in each organic layer.

  • Fluid loading of a vibrating cylindrical shell can change natural frequencies and vibration magnitudes of the shell and a vibrating cylindrical shell can also change acoustic pressure of fluid. The vibroacoustics of fluid-filled cylindrical shells need the coupled solution of Helmholtz equation and governing equation of a cylindrical shell with boundary conditions. This paper proposed the wall impedance of fluid-filled axisymmetric cylindrical shells, focusing on the inner fluid/shell interaction. To propose the impedance, shell displacements used the linear combination of in vacuo shell modes. Acoustic pressure prediction of fluid used Kirchchoff-Helmholtz Integral equation with Green function of the plane mode. For the demonstration of the proposed results, numerical applications on mufflers were conducted.

  • This study was evaluated on etcher of capacitive coupled plasmas with OES (Optical Emission Spectroscopy) and impedance by VI probe that are widely used for process control and monitoring at semiconductor industry. The experiment was operated at conventional Ar and C4F8 plasma with variable change such as pressure and addition of gas (Atmospheric Leak: N2 and O2), RF, pressure, that are highly possible to impact wafer yield during wafer process, in order to observe OES and VI Probe signals. The sensitivity change on OES and Impedance by Vi probe was analyzed by statistical method to determine healthy of process. The main goal of this study is to understand unwanted tool performance to eventually improve productive capability. It is important for process engineers to actively adjust tool parameter before any serious problem occurs.

  • One of principal causes of car accidents is low arousal level of driver. Drivers arrive their destination under an appropriate arousal level. Basic research was done to develop a portable arousal monitor and to evaluate the arousal level of drivers. An arousal monitor which can simulantaneously measure the skin impedance change and EEG was designed and tested. The relationship among three parameters was studied and was used to determine the index of skin impedance level depending on arousal level.

  • This study was conducted to measure the moisture content of soil using RF impedance in the range of 1 to 30MHz. Considering the water potential flow in the soils, two types of sensor such as parallel cylinder and perpendicular plate type were fabricated and tested. The capacitance and resistance of sonsors for soil samples having moisture content range of 2 to 27% were measured by Q-meter (HP4342). The higher soil moisture content was and the larger soil bulk density was, the more the capacitance of sensors increased. To eliminate the effect of bulk density on measuring soil moisture content using RF impedance, two kinds of model having the density independent functions such as the ratio of capacitance change to conductance change and weight of water and dry soils respectively were developed and estimated by regression analysis.
