  • The effects of slant interface in the hybrid specimen on the dynamic crack propagation behavior have been investigated using dynamic photoelasticity. The dynamic photoelasticity with the aid of Cranz-Shardin type high speed camera system is utilized to record the dynamic stress field around the dynamically propagating inclined interface crack tip in the three point bending specimens. The dynamic load is applied by a hammer dropped from 0.08m high without initial velocity. The dynamic crack propagation velocities and dynamic stresses field around the interface crack tips are investigated. Theoretical dynamic isochromatic fringe loops are compared with the experimental reults. It is interesting to note that the crack propagating velocity becomes comparable to the Rayleigh wave speed of the soft material of a specimen when slant angle decreases.

  • Drought stress is one of the major abiotic stresses in agriculture worldwide. We report here a proteomic approach to investigate the impact of post-fertilization drought on grain quality in rice seed endosperm (Oryza sativa cv. IR-64). Plants were stressed for 4 days at 3 days before heading. Total proteins of endosperm were extracted and separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Not many protein spots showed differential accumulation in drought-stressed samples. More than 400 protein spots were reproducibly detected, including three that were up-regulated and five down-regulated. Mass spectrometry analysis and database searching helped us to identify six spots representing different proteins. Functionally, the identified proteins were related to protein synthesis and carbohydrate metabolism, such as Granule-Bound Starch Synthase (GBSS, Wx protein), which is thought to play a very important role in starch biosynthesis and quality, a very crucial factor in determining rice grain quality.

  • This paper examines the pounding problem between adjacent decks subjected to strong earthquakes. The elastomeric bearings in an isolated bridge reduce the stresses on the superstructure and cushion the impact by transferring smaller seismic forces to the substructure. On the other hand, these bearings also allow large horizontal displacement of the superstructure due to seismic forces. Bridges having various supporting soil conditions and different frequency ratios between adjacent decks are investigated by numerical analysis. In the analysis, decision making is conducted whether the collision took place or not and, the magnitude of pounding force and the duration time of collision are obtained and the results are discussed.

  • Stresses are solved for two parallel cracks in an infinite orthotropic plate during passage of incoming shock stress waves normal to their surfaces. Fourier transformations were used to reduce the boundary conditions with respect to the cracks to two pairs of dual integral equations in the Laplace domain. To solve these equations, the differences in the crack surface displacements were expanded to a series of functions that are zero outside the cracks. The unknown coefficients in the series were solved using the Schmidt method so as to satisfy the conditions inside the cracks. The stress intensity factors were defined in the Laplace domain and were inverted numerically to physical space. Dynamic stress intensity factors were calculated numerically for selected crack configurations.

  • Cast steels have been mainly in rod type couplers which connect railway vehicles. These components, as important members, are exposed to repeat to repeated stresses and impact loading during stop and departure service for a long tie. The coupler suffers fatigue crack initiations and demage that cause need to repair weldment due to these loading conditions. Therefore, the heat affected zone of cast steel couple in rod type were evaluated in view of metallurgical weld characteristics after repair welding at laboratory. The specimens with two different welding techniques were evaluated after several welding conditions and post-heat treatments. Micro-vickers hardness and tensile tests and microstructural observations were conducted on heat affected zone of the weldment according to repair weld and post-heat treatment.

  • In the past sidetracking was the means to bypass a damaged zone or to correct the direction of a wellbore. Nowadays, this method is very common and useful in relocating the bottom of a wellbore in a more productive zone and consequently enhancing the production of a reservoir by saving a significant amount of time and money. In this paper, the stability of the bend area is assessed considering varied conditions of stress regime and sidetrack orientation. In general, the stress regime and the orientation of the principal stresses have negligible effect on the stability of the sidetrack compared to sidetrack inclination. On the other hand, the sidetrack deviation angle from the vertical main well plays the major role in the stability of the bend area.

  • In this paper it is to establish a comprehensive model for predicting damping in sandwich Laminated composites on the basis of strain energy method. In this model, the effect of transverse shear on the material damping has been considered with in-plane stresses. Results showed that the viscoelastic core thickness in the sandwich beam and the Length of a beam have a high impact on the material damping. The transverse shear appears to be highly influenced by the damping behavior in $0^0$ laminated sandwiched composites. However, it is Little influenced by that in $90^0$ laminated sandwiched composites.

  • Traffic safety and vibration serviceability of a railway bridge set a limitation to the application of long-span cable supported bridges even though the design trend of the bridge becomes longer and lighter. In the case of high speed railway, it becomes more severe for the high speed of the train and resonance of the structure. Therefore, the cable supported bridge does not exist in Korea high speed railway until now. On the other hand, in recent, Italia, Japan and China do design and construct the long-span cable supported bridges for high speed railway recently with overcoming of traffic safety and passenger comforts. In the present study, prior to analysis of traffic safety and passenger comforts, a extradosed bridge for common railway is re-designed for high speed railway. The difference of member forces and displacements by design live load, the difference of impact coefficient and variable stresses of cables are investigated.

  • To investigate wall-thinning impact on axial load resistance of Zircaloy-4 cladding rods after a LOCA transient, axial tensile samples have been machined on as-received tubes with reduced thicknesses between 370 and 580 ㎛. After high temperature oxidation under steam at 1200 ℃ with measured ECR ranging from 10 to 18% and water quenching, machined samples were axially loaded until fracture. These tests were modeled using a fracture mechanics approach developed in a previous study. Fracture stresses are rather well predicted. However, the slightly lower fracture stress observed for wall-thinned samples is not anticipated by this modeling approach. The results from this study confirm that characterizing the axial load resistance using semi-integral tests including the creep and burst phases was the best option to obtain accurate axial strengths describing accurately the influence of wall-thinning at burst region.

  • In the current study, the nonlinear impact of the Von-Kármán theory on the vibrational response of nonhomogeneous structures of functionally graded (FG) nano-scale tubes is investigated according to the nonlocal theory of strain gradient theory as well as high-order Reddy beam theory. The inhomogeneous distributions of temperature-dependent material consist of ceramic and metal phases in the radial direction of the tube structure, in which the thermal stresses are applied due to the temperature change in the thickness of the pipe structure. The general motion equations are derived based on the Hamilton principle, and eventually, the acquired equations are solved and modeled by the Meshless approach as well as a computer simulation via intelligent mathematical methodology. The attained results are helpful to dissect the stability of the MEMS and NEMS.
