  • Impact response of a vibro-impact system and its contact mechanism was studied. The vibro-impact system is composed of a small secondary system is constrained to move along a slot of fixed length in a large primary system. The contact mechanism is characterized by its coefficient of restitution. Numerical simulation analysis has been used to determine the time-history and the impact statistics of the primary and secondary systems. Input excitation of the primary system was random, and the responses obtained were the velocities of the primary and secondary system, the closing velocity in time axis and the duration time between impacts. The validity of the numerical simulation method was checked by comparing the results with those obtained by other researchers analytically. It is shown that the results obtained by the nemerical simulation analysis showed a good agreement with those for the analytical method.

  • Occupant protection in the side impact of a car became one of the most important issues of car crashworthiness due to high injury level in a side impact crash. An accurate simulation of the side impact crash is an essential tool for the reduction of development time and cost for side impact safety system. This paper describes a new test methodology that can accurately generate the crash pulses of a vehicle and a door in a very cost-effective manner, and then evaluates the injury values of the dummy for the various sled pulses. This test methodology is simple and easy to approach because the door velocity is controlled by the hydraulic actuator and brake and the seat velocity is only adjusted by the friction force of the hydraulic brake. The superiority of the proposed test methodology is proven by the evaluation of dummy's injury values according to the change of the pressure of the hydraulic brake and by the application as a tool for the development of side airbag.

  • Impact modifier reinforced polymers are frequently used. In this study, Izod impact test has been simulated to analyze the mechanism of impact reinforcement of Nylon6 which contains impact modifier. The modeling of rubber particles added to Nylon6 as an impact modifier has been attempted. Based on the modeling, simulation of Izod impact test has been performed to observe the distribution and direction of stress at the cross-section of impact specimen. Three computer simulation models for Nylon6 were investigated. Those were without impact modifier, containing impact modifier without surface treatment, and containing impact modifier with surface treatment in the Nylon6. Simulation results showed that the stress which originated at the notch surface propergated to the inside of specimen round a impact modifier. In addition to that, impact modifier reinforced Nylon6 specimen showed low stress ditribution in the cross-section specially at notch surface. Principal stress in perpendicular direction to crack was also lowered in impact modifier reinforced Nylon6. These enhanced impact resistance reduced and crack propergations. Through this study it was realized that the computer simulation can be utilized to investigate the property enhacement of composite materials.

  • Polymer has low mechanical strength than metal. In particular, the impact strength is very weak. Impact modifier reinforced polymers are frequently used. Impact strength of reinforced polymer is changed according to content and distribution of impact modifier. In this study, izod impact test has been simulated to analyze the mechanism of impact modifier reinforced Nylon 6. Computational results were compared for numbers and distributions of impact modifier. As the total volume of rubber particles decreased, the stress at the notch increased for the simulation model that the volume decreases as particle number increases. As the surface area of particle sphere increased, the stress and difference of principle stress increased for the simulation model that the total surface increases as particle number increases.

  • This paper presents a user-oriented port expansion simulation model that determines the future economic port capacity to meet the projected demand. The model consists of two parts; a physical impact simulation, and an economic impact simulation. The first part of the model simulates the effects caused by the port capacity expansion. The second part evaluates the port economics due to changes in the port capacity. The model was validated by applying it to the actual port expansion followed at the Port of Mobile, Alabama. A case study is then presented to demonstrate the capacity of the model with a coal handling port, the McDuffie Terminals at the Port of Mobile.

  • It is requested that the interior compartment of a passenger vehicle must be satisfied with the FMVSS201U regulation, FMH impact test. It is needed the design methodology to find the appropriate structure about the FMH impact. When designing the impact-absorbing structure for the FMH impact test, it is to be noted that the impact absorber must have different performance considering the stiffness of the vehicle as the impact position and approach angle of FMH. In this study, an efficient design methodology was developed by using subcomponent collapse simulation instead of conducting full-vehicle simulation, thereby reducing the time and resources spent. Further, this unit-model simulation helps optimize the impact absorbing structure.

  • We described the impact ionization rates of electron in GaAs/AlGaAs MQH(multi- quantum well) using EMC(ensenble Monte Carlo) simulation. Hot electron energy of injected into quantum well is increasing nearly liearly due to the applied electric field to the barrier of MQM inspite of various Al mole fraction in AlGaAs or barrier width. Impact ionization rates are decreasing exponentially by increasing Al mole fraction, and they have peak vague due to the barrier width.

  • We present the numerical implementation, simulation, and validation of the high-velocity impact experiments that have been described in the companion article. In this part, numerical investigations and simulations performed to mimic the tests are presented. The experiments were analyzed by the explicit integration-based software ABAQUS for improved simulations. Targets were modeled with a damaged plasticity model for concrete. Computational results of residual velocity and crater dimensions yielded acceptable results.

  • A study was performed to investigate the dynamic behaviors of fiber-reinforced composite materials subjected to transversely low-velocity impact. For this purpose, the simulation of modified beam finite element based on higher order beam theory for two(isotropic and anisotropic) materials is carried out according to the changes of material property, stacking sequence, geometric dimension and impact velocity of steel ball, etc. Main composite materials for simulation are composed of $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/-90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]_{2s}$, $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/-90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]_s$ and $[0^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]_{2s}$, $[0^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]_s$ stacking sequences. The effectiveness of this simulation for qualitative and quantitative evaluations in composite materials subjected to foreign object impact was established.
