  • The design flexibility and robustness have become key factors to handle various sources of uncertainties at the early phase of design. Even though designers are uncertain about which single values to specify, they usually have a preference for certain values over others. In the first and second reports of a four-part paper, a set-based design approach has been proposed for achieving design flexibility and robustness while capturing designer's preference, and its effectiveness has been illustrated with a simple vehicle side-door impact beam design problem. This report presents the applicability of the proposed design approach to the large-scale multi-objective design optimization with a successful implementation of real vehicle side-door structure design.

Energy Absorbing Characteristics of Thin-Walled Members for Vehicles Having Various Section Shapes (차체구조용 박육부재의 단면형상변화에 따른 에너지흡수 특성)

  • The front-end side members of automobiles absorb most of the energy in a case of front-end collision. The front-end side members are required to have a high stiffness together with easiness to collapse sequentially to absorb more impact energy. The axial static collapse test (5mm/min) was conducted by using UTM for form different types of members which have different cross section shapes; single hat, single cap, double cap, and double hat. The single hat shaped section member has the typical standard section, which the double hat shape section has a symmetry in the center to have more stiffness. As a result of the test, the energy absorbing characteristic was analyzed for different section shapes. It turned out that the change of section shape influence the absorbing energy, the mean collapse load and the maximum collapse load, and the relation between the change of section shape and the collapse mode.

  • 미국 등 선진국에서는 복합재료 자동차 차체 및 부품에 관한 연구를 활발히 수행하고 있다. 그러나, 국내 자동차 업계의 역사가 짧고, 보수성으로 인하여 복합재료 차체와 부품에 대한 연구와 응용이 부족한 형편이다. 따라서 본 고에서는 복합재료의 성질을 고찰한후에, 드라이브 샤프트와 Door Side Impact Beam을 복합재료로 설계하는 예를 설명하고자 한다.

  • Measuring similarity between two signals is a key element of the location template matching (LTM) method which is one of impact source localization technique. As a measure of similarity, the correlation coefficient is most widely used, and the group delay based method is recently proposed to improve the accuracy of finding the impact source. In practice, the LTM method assumes that the similarity between two signals decreases as the distance between two corresponding impact points increases, where the distance between two neighboring impact points defines the grid spacing. In this paper, it is shown that this assumption is not always true but the correlation coefficients fluctuate forming a main robe and many side robes as the distance between two neighboring impact points increases. On the other hand, the standard deviation of group delay sharply increases with a small increase of the grid spacing. These are demonstrated by using a simple cantilever beam. Based on these findings, an optimal way of implementing the LTM method may be suggested by combining the correlation coefficient and the group delay based approaches.

Investigation on Vibration Characteristics and Structural Reciprocity of Heunginjimun (흥인지문의 진동특성 및 상반성 분석)

  • Heunginjimun designated as a Treasure No.1 is a two-story wooden structure with 5 bay and 2 bay in its front and side views, respectively. This paper presents an investigation on vibration characteristics of Heunginjimun through both ambient vibration and impact hammer tests. Ambient vibration test was performed to identify the natural frequency of Heunginjimun from the spectrum analysis of time history. Impact hammer test was undertaken to find the frequency of Heunginjimun which is affected by the surrounding traffics and to verify the reciprocal principle for the wooden structural system. Ambient vibration test results of Heunginjimun showed that the natural frequencies in two principal axes 1.5 Hz and 1.1 Hz, respectively. It was confirmed from impact hammer tests for a ground that the frequency of 4.2 Hz is caused by the traffics surrounding Heunginjimun. It was also observed that from the impact hammer test results between two locations in Heunginjimun that the transfer functions measured from two corresponding locations coincided well with each other. This result shows that the wooden structural system is globally linear, and the reciprocal principle is established.

  • In this paper, numerical and experimental studies are performed to investigate the liquid impact on a free falling wedge. In the numerical simulation, the structure is assumed to be rigid and the elastic response is ignored. The fully nonlinear coupling between wedge and water is considered by an auxiliary function method based on the Boundary Element Method (BEM). At the intersection of the wedge surface and liquid surface, two coincident nodes are used to decouple the boundary conditions. The Eulerian free surface conditions in the local coordinate system are adopted to update the deformed free surface. In the experiments, five pressure sensors are fixed on each side of the wedge which is released from an experimental installation. Steel and aluminum wedges that have different structural elasticity are used in the experiments to investigate the influence of structural elasticity on the impact force. Numerical results are compared with experimental data and they agree very well. The influence of fluid gravity, body mass, initial entry speed and deadrise angle on the impact pressure are further investigated.

  • This study was investigated the nondestructive characteristics of the damage caused by low-velocity impact on symmetric cross-ply laminates. These laminates were $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]{_{16s,}}\;{_{24s,}}\;{_{32s,}}\;{_{48s}}$, that is, the thickness was 2, 3, 4 and 6 mm. The impact machine, model 8250 Dynatup Instron, was used a drop-weight type with gravity. The impact velocities used in experiment were 0.75, 0.90, 1.05, 1.20 and 1.35 m/sec. The load and deformation were increased as impact velocity increase. Even if the load increased with laminates thickness in same impact velocity, the deformation decreased. The extensional velocity was a quick as laminate thickness increase in same impact velocity and as impact velocity increase in same laminate thickness. In ultrasonic scans, damaged area was represented an dimmed zone. This is due to the fact that the wave, after having been partially reflected by the defects, has not enough energy to tough the oposite side or to come back from it. The damaged laminate areas were different according to the laminate thickness and the impact velocity. The extensional velocities became lower in if direction and higher in $0^{\circ}$ direction when the size of the defects increases. But, it was difficult to draw any conclusion for the extensional velocities in $45^{\circ}$ direction.

  • The study investigated the nondestructive characteristics of damage, caused by law-velocity impact, on symmetric cross-ply laminates, composed of [0o/90o]16s, 24s, 32s, 48s. The thickness of the laminates was 2, 3, 4 and 6 mm, respectively. The impact machine used, Model 8250 Dynatup Instron, was a drop-weight type that employed gravity. The impact velocities used in this experiment were 0.75, 0.90, 1.05, 1.20 and 1.35 m/sec, respectively. Both the load and the deformation increased when the impact velocity was increased. Further, when the load increased with the laminate thickness in the same impact velocity, the deformation still decreased. The extensional velocity was quick, as the laminate thickness increased in the same impact velocity and the impact velocity increased in the same laminate thickness.   • The impact evaluation of a DSM program is a very important issue since the results are used to determine the sustainability of a program. In general. to estimate the impacts of a DSM program it is required to measure the electricity usage changes before and after a program. Since the measurement-based approaches cost highly, most of the conventional evaluations are based on the average figures. However estimation of the average-based impacts can lead to both distorted results of over/under estimation of kW and kWh savings and non-optimal DSM planning. In this paper, we have developed a new multi-point measurement approach which can evaluate kW and kWh savings of a DSM program more exactly. To do this, the saving rate and operating rate are defined and set as the function of load factor of a customer, and these rates are incorporated with the conventional diffusion function of Bass to project the future impacts of a DSM program. The case study is performed on the inverter program of Korea by using the suggested approach.
