  • This paper is aimed at determining the shear and impact strength of waste plastic fibre reinforced concrete. M30 grade of concrete is prepared with waste plastic door fibres cut into 5 mm width and aspect ratios of 30, 50, 70, 90 and 110. Fibres are used in a volume fraction of 0 to 1.5% with an increment of 0.25%. L shaped specimens are cast for shear strength tests and flat plates of size $250{\times}250{\times}30mm$ are used for impact tests. "Drop ball method" is used for checking the impact strength. Shear strength is checked with L shaped specimens under UTM with a special attachment. It was found that up to 1.25% of waste plastic fibres can be effectively used for better strength of concrete both in shear and impact. Shear and impact strength were found to be increasing up to a volume fraction of fibres of 1.25%.

  • The present study dealt with the relationships among the interfacial shear strength, the thickness of interfacial reaction layer and the impact value of $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites. In addition, the tensile test was conducted to evaluate the fracture strain of $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites. To change the thickness of the reaction layer, $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites alternating sintered MoSi2 layers and Nb foils were fabricated as the parameter of hot press temperature. It has been found that the growth of the reaction layer increases the interfacial shear strength and decreases the impact value by localizing a plastic deformation of Nb foil. There also exist appropriate shear strength and the thickness of the reaction layer, which are capable of maximizing the fracture energy of $Nb/MoSi_2$.

  • The present study investigates the impact shear strength of thermal aged Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu lead-free solder joints at impact speeds ranging from 0.5 m/s to 2.5 m/s. The specimens were thermal aged for 24, 100, 250 and 1000 hours at $100^{\circ}C$. The experimental results demonstrate that the shear strength of the solder joint decreases with an increase in the load speed and aging time. The shear strength of the solder joint aged averagely decreased by 43% with an increase in the strain rate. For the as-reflowed specimens, the mode II stress intensity factor ($K_{II}$) of interfacial IMC between Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu and a copper substrate also was found to decrease from $1.63MPa.m^{0.5}$ to $0.97MPa.m^{0.5}$ in the speed range tested here. The degradations in the shear strength and fracture toughness of the aged solder joints are mainly caused by the growth of IMC layers at the solder/substrate interface.

  • Soils are natural granular materials whose mechanical properties differ according to the size and composition of the particles, so soils exhibit an obvious scale effect. Traditional soil mechanics is based on continuum mechanics, which can not reflect the impact of particle size on soil mechanics. On that basis, a matrix-reinforcing-particle cell model is established in which the reinforcing particles are larger-diameter sand particles and the matrix comprises smaller-diameter bentonite particles. Since these two types of particles deform differently under shear stress, a new shear-strength theory under direct shear that considers the stress concentration and bypass phenomena of the matrix is established. In order to verify the rationality of this theory, a series of direct shear tests with different reinforcing particle diameter and volume fraction ratio are carried out. Theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that the interaction among particles of differing size and composition is the basic reason for the size effect of soils. Furthermore, the stress concentration and bypass phenomena of the matrix enhance the shear strength of a soil, and the volume ratio of reinforcing particles has an obvious impact on the shear strength. In addition, the newly proposed shear-strength theory agrees well with experimental values.

  • [ $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ ] laminate composites have been successfully fabricated by alternately stacking $MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ powder layer and Nb sheet, followed by hot pressing in a graphite mould. The fabricating parameters were selected as hot press temperatures. The instrumented Charpy impact test was carried out at the room temperature in order to investigate the relationship between impact properties and fabricating temperatures. The interfacial shear strength between $MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ and Nb, which is associated with the fabricating temperature and the growth of interfacial reaction layer, is also discussed. The plastic deformation of Nb sheet and the interfacial delamination were macroscopically observed. The $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites had the maximum impact value when fabricated at 1623K, accompanying the increase of fracture displacement and crack propagation energy. The interfacial shear strength of $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites increased with the growth of interfacial reaction layer, which resulted from the increase of fabricating temperature. there is an appropriate interfacial shear strength for the enhancement of impact value of $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites. A large increase of interfacial shear strength restrains the plastic deformation of Nb sheet.

  • This study proposed hybrid coupled shear wall in the steel plate insertion method, which is capable of reinforcing the shear strength of the entire wall without increasing wall thickness in the wall-slab apartment buildings. The proposed hybrid coupled shear wall was tested for its effectiveness, shear strength and seismic behavior in experiment. As a test result, the shear strength improvement by the proposed hybrid coupled shear was found effective. Integral-type of steel plate insertion was found more effective than separate-type steel plate insertion. In this case, if the stud enforcement method proposed in this study was used, the shear strength of hybrid coupled shear wall was recommended to calculate using the KBC2016 0709.4.1(3) method. The steel plate inserted in the proposed method was found to have no significant impact on the final fracture behavior and bending strength of hybrid coupled shear wall. The shear strength at the final destruction of the wall was merely about 1/50 of the entire design shear strength. Thus, it is deemed that the wall was over excessively designed regarding the shear force in the existing design method. This finding indicates further study on wall designing to ensure effective and economic designing based on appropriate strength estimation under the destruction mechanism.

  • The effect of maleinized polybutadiene (MPB) on the mechanical properties of epoxy resins including adhesion strength, elongation and impact peel resistance was investigated in this study, in which MPB is an anhydride-functionalized polybutadiene prepolymer. Different molecular weights (3.1K and 5.6K) of MPB were added to diglycidyl ether bisphenol-A (DEGBA), an epoxy resin, to increase its impact peel strength and elongation. At various loading percent (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%) of MPB in the epoxy resin, significant improvements of mechanical properties were observed. According to the comparative analysis results, the modified epoxy system with 15 wt% (3.1K) MPB exhibited the highest lap shear strength, about 40% higher than that of neat epoxy. The tensile strength and elongation steadily and simultaneously increased as the loading percent of MPB increased. The impact peel strengths at low (-40℃) and room (23℃) temperatures were substantially improved by MPB incorporation into epoxy resins. Reactive and flexible MPB prepolymer seems to construct strong nano-structured networks with rigid epoxy backbones without sacrificing the tensile and adhesion strengths while increasing impact resistance/toughness and elongation properties. For higher impact peel while maintaining adhesion and tensile strengths, approximately 10-15 wt% MPB loading in epoxy resin was suggested. Consequently, incorporation of functionalized MPB prepolymer into epoxy system is an easy and efficient way for improving some crucial mechanical properties of epoxy resins.

  • The impact value, the interfacial shear strength, the tensile strength and the fracture strain of Nb/MoSi$_2$laminate composites, which were associated with the interfacial reaction layer, have been investigated. Three types of Nb/MoSi$_2$ laminate composites alternating sintered MoSi$_2$ layers and Nb foils were fabricated as the parameter of hot press temperature. The thickness of interfacial reaction layer of Nb/MoSi$_2$ laminate composites increased with increasing the fabrication temperature. The growth of interfacial reaction layer increased the interfacial shear strength and led to the decrease of impact value in Nb/MoSi$_2$ laminate composites. It was also found that in order to maximize the fracture energy of Nb/MoSi$_2$ laminate composites, interfacial shear strength and the thickness of interfacial reaction layer must be secured appropriately.

  • The structural epoxy adhesive used in car body assembly needs the highest level of joint mechanical strength under lap shear, T-peel and impact peel conditions. In this study, the effect of nano functionalized block copolymer addition on the impact peel strength of epoxy adhesive was investigated. DSC analysis showed that the addition of nano functionalized block copolymer did not affect the curing reaction of epoxy adhesive. From single lap shear test, it was found out that the addition of nano functionalized block copolymer slightly decreased the cohesive strength of cured adhesive layer. The addition of nano functionalized block copolymer showed beneficial effect on T-peel strength by changing the adhesive failure mode to the mixed mode. However, the addition of nano functionalized block copolymer just decreased the room temperature impact peel strength. It was considered that the addition of nano functionalized block copolymer could have effect on disturbing the crack propagation only for the case of slow strain rate.

  • The drop impact reliability comes to be important for evaluation of the life time of mobile electronic products such as cellular phone. The drop impact reliability of solder joint is generally affected by the kinds of pad and reflow number, therefore, the reliability evaluation is needed. Drop impact test proposed by JEDEC has been used as a standard method, however, which requires high cost and long time. The drop impact reliability can be indirectly evaluated by using high speed shear test of solder joints. Solder joints formed on 3 kinds of surface finishes OSP (Organic Solderability Preservation), ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold) and ENEPIG (Electroless Nickel Electroless Palladium Immersion Gold) was investigated. The shear strength was analysed with the morphology change of intermetallic compound (IMC) layer according to reflow number. The layer thickness of IMC was increased with the increase of reflow number, which resulted in the decrease of the high speed shear strength and impact energy. The order of the high speed shear strength and impact energy was ENEPIG > ENIG > OSP after the 1st reflow, and ENEPIG > OSP > ENIG after 8th reflow.
