  • Optimum design of bumper beam is investigated using nonlinear CAE structural analysis techniques. In order to minimize its weight, while enhancing structural performances, bumper beam structural analyses were carried out to produce optimum section. Model is composed of bumper beam and stay. First, considering FMVSS safety standard, static strength and energy absorbing capability were estimated for several competitive bumpers through pendulum static analysis, and most promising section was chosen. Next, to ensure dynamic crashworthinesss performance for center pole impact was evaluated for the bumper beam with chosen section through pendulum static analysis, referring to DHS bumper dynamic impact standard. Finally, 2.5 mph bumper beam was designed and its structural performance was estimated. Through this investigation, an optimized bumper beam section with less weight of 20% while maintaining almost equal carshworthiness, compared with a conventional bumper beam section which proved its impact crashworthiness by experiments, was developed.

  • The fracture toughness of three different kinds of epoxy-matrix composites containing the same volume fraction of reinforcement and the variation of fracture toughness of glass-carbon fiber/epoxy hybrid composites due to the change of test temperature and different glass fiber content were investigated in this study. Glass fiber/epoxy composite provided much higher fracture toughness than that of other composites because of the high strain at failure of glass fiber. Particularly the carbon fiber/epoxy composite exhibited the low fracture toughness caused by the low strain energy absorbing capacity of carbon fiber. And it was found that the strain at failure of reinforcement and interfacial delamination absorbing a significant amount of impact energy played an important role to increase fracture toughness of composites. The fracture toughness of the glass-carbon fiber hybrid composites increased with increasing the glass fiber content and decreased with raising the test temperature. The residual stress arising from the different thermal expansion between the matrix and reinforcement influenced the fracture toughness of composites.

  • The front-end side members of automobiles absorb most of the energy in a front-end collision. The front-end side members are required to have a high stiffness together with easiness to collapse sequentially to absorb more impact energy. The axial static collapse test (5mm/mim) was conducted by using UTM with respect to the single hat shaped section members which are the standard section shape of the spot welded section members, to the single cap shaped section members, to the double cap shaped section members and to the double hat shaped section members whose section shape are changed in order to give more stiffness. As a result of test, the energy absorbing characteristic was analyzed for different section shapes. That is, it was analyzed that the change of section shape influenced the absorbing energy, the mean collapse load and the maximum collapse load, and that the relation between the change of section shape and the collapse mode.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the ground reaction force of arm landing on arm and leg during sports aerobics. Subjects of this study were total 10 players of 5 males and 5 females who have are domain sports aerobics medalists more than the third place in national tournaments. The subjects jumped between the two ground reaction force analyzers, while landing their right hand on the front platform(#1) and their right leg on the rear platform(#2), and the data frequency was set to 200Hz. Findings of this study are as follows; More than 3 times of impact peak force of vertical reaction force acted on arm joint than on leg joint. And, when ground reaction force on foot increased, ground reaction force on hand decreased. 3 impact peaks of curve of ground reaction force were found - Impact Peak 1 incurred on the time the palm lands on the ground, Impact Peak 2 absorbing shock secondarily on wrist joint, and Active Peak incurred on the time of holding the weight while pushing out the severly bent elbow joint.

  • In the frontal collision the spot welded hat-shaped section side member is the fundamental structure for automobiles and has a great amount of absorbing capacity. For this reason LS-DYNA3D has been used for analyzing impact collapse characteristics on hat shaped section member with respect to the valuables; thickness, width ratio and spot weld potch on impact load(7.19m/sec, 1034J). By comparing the results from simulation and the experimental results, the utilization of simulation has been certified.

  • Generally the ceiling frame of apartment house is made of wood. But the wood frame has several problems due to the natural properties such as distortion by shrink, low fire resistance and material loss in the construction field. And it has some defections in sound insulation performance. Therefore it is necessary to develop a new method that can be used as a ceiling frame. This study aims to analyze and to compare the sound insulation characteristics against the floor impact sound between wood ceiling frame and M-bar frame which is made of steel. The results of this study are like these. M-bar frame is more effective than wood ceiling frame in sound insulation. And sound absorbing or sound insulation materials which can be Put on gypsum board are helpful to improve floor impact sound insulation performance.

  • Most protection systems such as seat belts and airbags are not effective means for side structure. There has been significant effort in the automobile industries in seeking other protective methods, such as stiffer structure and padding on the door inner panel. Therefore, a car-to-car side impact model has been developed using ATB occupant simulation program and validated for test data of the vehicle. Compared to the existing side impact models, the developed model has a more detailed vehicle side structure representation for the more realistic impact response of the door. This model include impact bar which effectively increases the side structure stiffness without reduction of space between the occupant and the door and padding for absorbing impact energy. The established model is applied to a 4-door vehicle. The parameter study indicated that a stiffer impact bar would reduce both the acceleration-based criteria, such as thoracic trauma index: TTI(d), and deformation-based criteria, such as viscous criterion(VC). Padding on the door inner panel would reduce TTI(d) while VC gives the opposite indication in a specified thickness range. For a 4-door vehicle, the stiffness enhancement of B-pillar is more beneficial than that of A-pillar for occupant injury severity indices.

  • According to the advanced study, Increase of ceiling air space could cause increase of floor impact sound by air-spring effect. So in this research, we studied the increase of floor impact sound caused by ceiling air space in apartment buildings. At first, we evaluated the change of floor impact noise in the condition of with or without ceiling air-space. And then we installed perforated ceiling systems and glass wool at ceiling area. we expected that perforated ceiling systems could prevent air-spring effect in ceiling space. As a result, ceiling air space caused increasement of floor heavy impact noise about 2~4dB. But perforated ceiling & sound-absorbing materials system could give us reduction of heavy floor impact noise about 3dB. So this systems could be a good alternative to obey national regulations, because it can reduce heavy impact noise additional to floating floor systems.

  • The best method to evaluate crashworthiness of a trainset as a whole is to analyse one dimensional dynamic model composed of nonlinear dampers, springs and bars, and masses. In this study, crashworthiness of KHST was evaluated by analysing a nonlinear spring/bar-damper-mass model. The numerical results show that the KHST can easily absorb kinetic energy at lower impact force and acceleration in a heavy collision, when compared with KTX. Also, the KHST can be protected from any damage in its carbody and components except the prepared energy absorbing tube in a light collision, like a traint-to-train accident at speed under 8 kph. However, the KTX can be much damaged in the a light collision because there is no energy absorbing tube.

In conclusion, the crashworthy performance of KHST has been much improved than that of KTX, although there are something to be improved for a better crashworthy performance
