  • This study investigates the saturation level of surface dryness, quantity of adhesive mortar, and the alien substance content of recycled aggregates for concrete to develop an adequate quality testing method for understanding the properties of recycled aggregates, which differ greatly from preexisting aggregates. For tests that measure the saturation level of surface dryness, where detail methods are applied differently according to the tester, various testing methods from across world were compared and analyzed. This study revealed that when measuring the saturation level of surface dryness of a certain sample, aggregates must be supplemented immediately whenever the height of the sample becomes lower than the measuring mold, and allowing the tamper to free fall on the sample will provide the most accurate results. When measuring the quantity of adhesive mortar of recycled aggregates for concrete, an acid solution was used, and since the quantity of adhesive mortar increases as the particle sizes gets smaller, the sample for testing should represent the entire granularity. Sulfuric acid solution is adequate for immersion, and the concentration should be 20% for best results. According to the alien substance content measurement, which was examined by the naked eye, the error range caused by the difference in particle size was neglectable, and therefore the sample should be $2.5{\sim}5.0mm$ in size concerning the accuracy and measuring time. Also, for coarse recycled aggregates, the sample should amount to 1kg for measuring alien substance content by the naked eye, which proves that assortment by the naked eye is the most adequate method for measuring the alien substance content of a recycled aggregate.

  • Spot welding has wide used with a high work efficiency in the automotive and aerospace industries. Up to the present, the technique mainly used to test spot welds on production lines has been entirely depended upon destructive chisel or peel testing. Therefore, it's being very important assignment to secure the NDE technique which can be evaluate spot weld quality with more efficiency and high reliability. This paper discusses the feasibility of UNDE techniques to evaluate spot weld quality. For the sake of the approach to the quantitative measurement of nugget diameter and the discrimination of a the corona bond from nugget, ultrasonic c-scan image and distribution of reflective echo amplitude was measured by immersion method with the mechanical and the electronic scanning of point-focussed ultrasonic beam(25 MHz). As the results of this study, corona bond which is the most dangerous types of interface defects can be successfully detected, as well as expulsion and voids. Ultrasonic testing results were confirmed and compared by optical microscope and SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope) observation of the spot-weld cross section. The results show that the nugget diameter can be successfully measured with the accuracy of 0.8 mm.

  • Traditional ultrasonic evaluation to detect micro/small surface cracks is the pulse-echo technique using the normal immersion transducer with high frequency, or the angle beam transducer with surface wave. It is difficult to make the automatic ultrasonic system that is to detect micro and small surface crack and position on the large structure like steel and ceramic rolls, because of the huge data of inspection and the ambiguous position data of transducer. The aim of this study using the high precision scanning acoustic microscope with 10MHz large aperture transducer was to display the real time A, B, C-scan for the automatic ultrasonic system in order to detect the existence and position of surface crack. The ultrasonic method with large aperture transducer was improved the scanning time and speed over 10times faster than traditional methods.

  • Conventional ultrasonic examination to detect micro and small surface cracks is based on the pulse-echo technique using a normal immersion focused transducer with high frequency, or an angle-beam transducer generating surface waves. It is difficult to make an automatic ultrasonic system that can detect micro and small surface cracks and position in a large structure like steel and ceramic rolls, because of the huge data of inspection and the ambiguous position data of the transducer. In this study, a high-precision scanning acoustic microscope with a 10MHz large-aperture transducer has been used to assess the existence, position and depth of a surface crack from the real-time A, B, C scans obtained by exploiting the ultrasonic diffraction. The ultrasonic method with large aperture transducer has improved the accuracy of the crack depth assessment and also the scanning speed by ten times, compared with the conventional ultrasonic methods.

  • Recently high frequency ultrasonic transducers to employ polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) or polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene P(VDF-TrFE) have been used to detect small flaws in immersion testing. The detection field depending on the water path between the transducer and a specimen and the path in a tested specimen was measured using a PVDF transducer with nominal frequency 80MHz. Also, C-scan and B-scan were performed for the specimens made of Cr-Ni steel with the artificial flaws, the flat-bottom holes with diameter ranging from $50{\mu}m$ to $560{\mu}m$ at 12mm depth. As the result, the flaws with diameter larger than $280{\mu}m$ were detected, but the flaws with the ratio of diameter to wavelength smaller than about 0.48 were not detected. That the smaller flaws could not be detected was attributed to the attenuation of high frequency components in the steel specimens.

  • Two different methods were used for the scattering analysis of side-drilled holes(SDH). The scattering models include an explicit model based on the Kirchhoff approximation and the solution of the exact separation of variables. The far-field scattering amplitude was calculated and their time-domain results were compared for the case of shear vertical wave. The exact solution predicts the existence of the creeping wave. The Kirchhoff approximation agreed to the exact solution, except the case of the creeping wave. Two measurement models were introduced to predict the response from the SDHs for the case of immersion, pulse-echo testing. The received voltage was calculated for the case of the shear vertical waves with the incident angle of $45^{\circ}$ to the SDH with the diameter of 1mm, and compared with the experimental results.

  • Ultrasonic transducers with high resolution and resonant frequency are required to detect small defects (less than hundreds of ${\mu}m$) by ultrasonic testing. The resonance frequency and resolution of an ultrasonic transducer are closely related to the thickness of piezo-electric materials, backing materials, and the electric impedance matching technique. Among these factors, electrical impedance matching plays an important role because it can reduce the loss and reflection of ultrasonic energy differences in electrical impedance between an ultrasonic transducer and an ultrasonic defects detecting system. An LC matching circuit is the most frequently used electric matching method. It is necessary for the electrical impedance of an ultrasonic transducer to correspond to approximately $50{\Omega}$ to compensate the difference in electrical impedance between both connections. In this study, a 15 MHz immersion ultrasonic transducer was fabricated and an LC electrical impedance circuit was applied to that for having broad-band frequency characteristic.

  • The durability of two kinds of CFRP plates, carbon/UP and carbon/V, was studied under severe environmental conditions. Immersion into the chemical solutions and accelerated weathering were executed on the CFRP plates and the weight change under each condition was measured. After those treatments, the plates were tested by tensile testing machine to measure the mechanical properties and observed by SEM to find the damage behaviour of the surface. Comparing the virgin plates and the chemically exposed plates, both plates show severe deterioration of the mechanical properties. But, the plates subjected to alkali solution show much larger reduction than those of acidic solution and carbon/V has better chemical resistance than carbon/UP. The material properties of CFRP plate exposed to the weathering were deteriorated linearly proportional to the exposure time.

  • This paper is results on Chemisorption of organic compound for the sea water fire fighting line of naval vessels. The quantitative analysis of Chemisorption has been investigated in seawater after immersion in 0.1 % of NaDDTC solutions for 43 hours. The morphology and topography were investigated by FE-SEM and AFM. The chemical elements were analyzed by SEM-EDS, XPS and the depth of chemical elements was measured by depth profiles. The effect of NaDDTC comes from Chemisorption between Copper and Sulfur of NaDDTC. As a result, test results showed that sulfur is helpful to protect a corrosion of seawater line.

  • A two-dimensional boundary element method was used for the scattering analysis of side-drilled hole(SDH). The far-field scattering amplitude was calculated for shear vertical(SV) wave, and their frequency and time-domain results were presented. The time-domain scattering amplitude showed the directly reflected wave from the SDH leading edge as well as the creeping wave. In an immersion, pulse-echo testing, two measurement models were introduced to predict the response from SDHs. The 2-D boundary element scattering amplitude was converted to the 3-D amplitude to be used in the measurement model. The receiver voltage was calculated fer SV wave incidence at 45$^{\circ}C$ on the 1 m diameter SDH, and the result was compared with experiment.
