  • The purpose of this study is to develop an observation program for obtaining effective flat images that are necessary for photometric observation. The development of the program was achieved by improving the existing method for obtaining twilight flat images. The existing method for obtaining twilight flat images acquires flat images by observing the sky light after sunset or light before sunrise. The decision of when to observe flat images at each night is solely dependent on the judgment of an observer, and thus the obtained flat images for particular nights may not be clean. Especially, in the case of the observatories where an automated observation system is in operation, there is a difficulty that an observer should pay attention during sunrise and sunset in order to obtain flat images. In this study, a computer program is developed to improve this inconvenience and to efficiently perform photometric observation in the observatories where an automated observation system is applied. This program can obtain flat images by calculating the time for obtaining flat images automatically and the exposure time using a numerically calculated function. When obtaining twilight flat images at dusk and at dawn, the developed program performs automated observation and provides effective flat images by acquiring appropriate exposure time considering the sunrise and sunset times that vary depending on the day of observation. The code for performing this task was added to Obs Tool II (Yoon et al. 2006), which is the automated observation system of the Chungbuk National University Observatory, and the usefulness of the developed program was examined by performing an actual automated observation. If this program is applied to other observatories where automated observation is in operation, it is expected that stable and high-quality flat images could be obtained, which can be used for the pre-processing of photometric observation data.

  • In this paper, a practical image security system using SA algorithm and 4-f optical correlator system is proposed. The encrypted image and key image with binary phase components are generated using an iterative SA algorithm. a decrypted image is found through the correlation of the encrypted and key images using 4-f optical correlator system. The encrypted and key images are consisted of binary phase components. So, it is easy to implement the optical security system using the proposed technique. And if we fix the encrypted image in the optical security system and change the key images, we get different images, so it is possible to apply to the distinguished authorization system using different key images. Computer simulations show that despite the binary phase components of the two images(encrypted and key image), decrypted images are generated.

  • In this paper, we propose a synthesis method of elemental images from Kinect images for 3D integral imaging display. Since RGB images and depth image obtained from Kinect are not able to display 3D images in integral imaging system, we need transform the elemental images in integral imaging display. To do so, we synthesize the elemental images based on the geometric optics mapping from the depth plane images obtained from RGB image and depth image. To show the usefulness of the proposed system, we carry out the preliminary experiments using the two person object and present the experimental results.

  • Many applications using satellite data from high-resolution multispectral sensors require an image fusion step, known as pansharpening, before processing and analyzing the multispectral images when spatial fidelity is crucial. Image fusion methods are to improve images with higher spatial and spectral resolutions by reducing spectral distortion, which occurs on image fusion processing. The image fusion methods can be classified into MRA (Multi-Resolution Analysis) and CSA (Component Substitution Analysis) approaches. To suggest the efficient image fusion method for Pleiades and KOMPSAT (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) 3 satellites, this study will evaluate image fusion methods for multispectral and panchromatic images. HPF (High-Pass Filtering), SFIM (Smoothing Filter-based Intensity Modulation), GS (Gram Schmidt), and GSA (Adoptive GS) were selected for MRA and CSA based image fusion methods and applied on multispectral and panchromatic images. Their performances were evaluated using visual and quality index analysis. HPF and SFIM fusion results presented low performance of spatial details. GS and GSA fusion results had enhanced spatial information closer to panchromatic images, but GS produced more spectral distortions on urban structures. This study presented that GSA was effective to improve spatial resolution of multispectral images from Pleiades 1A and KOMPSAT 3.

  • Recently, the Korean wave has caused many foreign nations to pay attention to various fields including Korean culture, arts, fashion and beauty. Korean images so far were mainly discussed in terms of aesthetics, and there is lack of efforts to visually shape Korean images. On the contrary, Oriental images focused around Japan and China have greater global influence and better globalized fashion styles compared to Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to suggest a globalized proposal of Korean fashion styling which reflects original and unique aesthetic characteristics of Korea that can be accepted by the global market. In this study, the concept and types of fashion styling and stylists were examined, as well as the definition of Korean image and types and characteristics of Korean images shown on fashion magazines. Also, after collecting photographs having Korean images that were included in the editorial fashion styling of Vogue Korea, their characteristics were analyzed. The results of interviews with professional fashion stylists were summarized to propose an editorial fashion styling with Korean image for overseas consumers who long for and wish to imitate Korean fashion styling.

  • Color images from various application areas have their own characteristics. Practical segmentation systems need specialized methods to death with the characteristics. In this paper. we propose a distributed genetic algorithm based segmentation method for color breast carcinoma cell images. To extract positive nuclei and negative nuclei from the cell images, a distributed genetic algorithm with improved genetic operations and an evaluation function is used. As initial values, representative colors from images are introduced to work well with the cell images. A test to verify the validity of the proposed method shows well-segmented images. This result suggests that the method is pertinent to be but into practical use for the images haying limited objects with limited colors.

  • In this paper, we present an algorithm for synthesizing intermediate views from a stereoscopic pair of images. Syntheses of intermediate images allows one to realize a more comfortable the 3D display system. The proposed method is based on block matching, which is not ordinarily used. The contour information is used for a block decision. In order to find an equivalent (or corresponding) block, there are two steps: "matching of contour-to-original image" and "matching of contour-to-contour image" methods. "Matching of contour-to-contour image" uses both left and right contour images. This block matching method allows us to find the corresponding block in spite of different block sizes. Experimental results illustrate the performance of the proposed technique and we obtained a high quality image of more than 31 dB PSNR.image of more than 31 dB PSNR.

  • In order to apply three-dimensional images to industries, the possibility of realizing three-dimensional images should be ensured and when operating a task using three-dimensional images, the intention of the observer and the result of operation should be precisely related. The aim of this paper is to investigate the task performance of a human operator during operating a robot manipulator using three-dimensional and two-dimensional image displays. From the result of this research, it was found that the accuracy of robot operation in the case of using three-dimensional displays is much higher than in the case of using two-dimensional displays and the adapting time to the operating task using three-dimensional displays is shorter than that using two-dimensional displays. From such results, we concluded that the application of three-dimensional displays, which can closely reflect real environment, to industries is desirable.

  • As applications of spaceborne SAR imagery are extended, there are increased demands for accurate registrations for better understanding and fusion of radar images. It becomes common to adopt multi-resolution SAR images to apply for wide area reconnaissance. Geometric correction of the SAR images can be performed by using satellite orbit and attitude information. However, the inherent errors of the SAR sensor's attitude and ground geographical data tend to cause geometric errors in the produced SAR image. These errors should be corrected when the SAR images are applied for multi-temporal analysis, change detection applications and image fusion with other sensor images. The undesirable ground registration errors can be corrected with respect to the true ground control points in order to produce complete SAR products. Speeded Up Robust Feature (SURF) technique is an efficient algorithm to extract ground control points from images but is considered to be inappropriate to apply to SAR images due to high speckle noises. In this paper, an attempt is made to apply SURF algorithm to SAR images for image registration and fusion. Matched points are extracted with respect to the varying parameters of Hessian and SURF matching thresholds, and the performance is analyzed by measuring the imaging matching accuracies. A number of performance measures concerning image registration are suggested to validate the use of SURF for spaceborne SAR images. Various simulations methodologies are suggested the validate the use of SURF for the geometric correction and image registrations and it is shown that a good choice of input parameters to the SURF algorithm should be made to apply for the spaceborne SAR images of moderate resolutions.

  • The accurate error size and discrimination region in the perception of depth amount from 3-dimensional images by the human visual system will be the basic data for the utilization and application of the binocular 3- eimensional image system. This paper is focused on studying the accuracy of the depth amount perceived from 3- dimensional images by the human visual system. From the performed experiment, the following results have been obtained: (1) The depth amount perceived from the binocular 3- dimensional images has been displayed by a proper scale of distance, and found to be imprecise and also have a large variance. (2) In utilizing the binocular 3-dimensional image system, it seems more appropriate to make the images viewed outward rather than inward from the screen in the regard of error and variance. (3) The binocular 3-dimensional image system can be effectively applied to displaying unreal space, for example, the layout of room in design, from the viewpoint of perception characteristics of depth amount.
