Modified Seam Finding Algorithm based on Saliency Map to Generate 360 VR Image (360 VR 영상 제작을 위한 Saliency Map 기반 Seam Finding 알고리즘)

  • The cameras generating 360 VR image are too expensive to be used publically. To overcome this problem, we propose a way to use smart phones instead of VR camera, where more than 100 pictures are taken by smart phone and are stitched into a 360 VR image. In this scenario, when moving objects are in some of the pictures, the stitched 360 VR image has various degradations, for example, ghost effect and mis-aligning. In this paper, we proposed an algorithm to modify the seam finding algorithms, where the saliency map in ROI is generated to check whether the pixel belongs to visually salient objects or not. Various simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is effective to increase the quality of the generated 360 VR image.

  • We propose a new saliency map model for selecting an attended location in an arbitrary visual scene, which is one of the most important characteristics of human vision system. In selecting an attended location, an edge information can be considered as a feature basis to construct the saliency map. Edge filters are obtained from the independent component analysis(ICA) that is the best way to find independent edges in natural gray scenes. In order to reflect the non-uniform density in our retina, we use a multi-scaled pyramid input image instead of using an original input image. Computer simulation results show that the proposed saliency map model with multi-scale property successfully generates the plausible attended locations.

A Saliency Map based on Color Boosting and Maximum Symmetric Surround

  • Nowadays, the saliency region detection has become a popular research topic because of its uses for many applications like object recognition and object segmentation. Some of recent methods apply color distinctiveness based on an analysis of statistics of color image derivatives in order to boosting color saliency can produce the good saliency maps. However, if the salient regions comprise more than half the pixels of the image or the background is complex, it may cause bad results. In this paper, we introduce the method to handle these problems by using maximum symmetric surround. The results show that our method outperforms the previous algorithms. We also show the segmentation results by using Otsu's method.

  • This paper presents a new saliency map which is constructed by providing dynamic weights on individual features in an input image to search ROI(Region Of Interest) or FOA(Focus Of Attention). To construct a saliency map on there is no a priori information, three feature-maps are constructed first which emphasize orientation, color, and intensity of individual pixels, respectively. From feature-maps, conspicuity maps are generated by using the It's algorithm and their information quantities are measured in terms of entropy. Final saliency map is constructed by summing the conspicuity maps weighted with their individual entropies. The prominency of the proposed algorithm has been proved by showing that the ROIs detected by the proposed algorithm in ten different images are similar with those selected by one-hundred person's naked eyes.

  • This paper presents a salient region detection algorithm for auto-focusing based on the characteristics of a human's visual attention. To describe the saliency at the local, regional, and global levels, this paper proposes a set of novel features including multi-scale local contrast, variance, center-surround entropy, and closeness to the center. Those features are then prioritized to produce a saliency map. The major advantage of the proposed approach is twofold; i) robustness to changes in focus and ii) low computational complexity. The experimental results showed that the proposed method outperforms the existing low-level feature-based methods in the sense of both robustness and accuracy for auto-focusing.

The Method to Measure Saliency Values for Salient Region Detection from an Image

  • In this paper we introduce an improved method to measure saliency values of pixels from an image. The proposed saliency measure is formulated using local features of color and a statistical framework. In the preprocessing step, rough salient pixels are determined as the local contrast of an image region with respect to its neighborhood at various scales. Then, the saliency value of each pixel is calculated by Bayes' rule using rough salient pixels. The experiments show that our approach outperforms the current Bayes' rule based method.

Image saliency detection based on geodesic-like and boundary contrast maps

  • Image saliency detection is the basis of perceptual image processing, which is significant to subsequent image processing methods. Most saliency detection methods can detect only a single object with a high-contrast background, but they have no effect on the extraction of a salient object from images with complex low-contrast backgrounds. With the prior knowledge, this paper proposes a method for detecting salient objects by combining the boundary contrast map and the geodesics-like maps. This method can highlight the foreground uniformly and extract the salient objects efficiently in images with low-contrast backgrounds. The classical receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, which compares the salient map with the ground truth map, does not reflect the human perception. An ROC curve with distance (distance receiver operating characteristic, DROC) is proposed in this paper, which takes the ROC curve closer to the human subjective perception. Experiments on three benchmark datasets and three low-contrast image datasets, with four evaluation methods including DROC, show that on comparing the eight state-of-the-art approaches, the proposed approach performs well.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for generating improved saliency map by learning multiple features to improve the accuracy and reliability of saliency map which has similar result to human visual perception type. In order to overcome the inaccurate result of reverse selection or partial loss in color based salient area estimation in existing salience map generation, the proposed method generates multi feature data based on learning. The features to be considered in the image are analyzed through the process of distinguishing the color pattern and the region having the specificity in the original image, and the learning data is composed by the combination of the similar protrusion area definition and the specificity area using the LAB color space based color analysis. After combining the training data with the extrinsic information obtained from low level features such as frequency, color, and focus information, we reconstructed the final saliency map to minimize the inaccurate saliency area. For the experiment, we compared the ground truth image with the experimental results and obtained the precision-recall value.

Automatic Change Detection Using Unsupervised Saliency Guided Method with UAV and Aerial Images

  • In this paper, an unsupervised saliency guided change detection method using UAV and aerial imagery is proposed. Regions that are more different from other areas are salient, which make them more distinct. The existence of the substantial difference between two images makes saliency proper for guiding the change detection process. Change Vector Analysis (CVA), which has the capability of extracting of overall magnitude and direction of change from multi-spectral and temporal remote sensing data, is used for generating an initial difference image. Combined with an unsupervised CVA and the saliency, Principal Component Analysis(PCA), which is possible to implemented as the guide for change detection method, is proposed for UAV and aerial images. By implementing the saliency generation on the difference map extracted via the CVA, potentially changed areas obtained, and by thresholding the saliency map, most of the interest areas correctly extracted. Finally, the PCA method is implemented to extract features, and K-means clustering is applied to detect changed and unchanged map on the extracted areas. This proposed method is applied to the image sets over the flooded and typhoon-damaged area and is resulted in 95 percent better than the PCA approach compared with manually extracted ground truth for all the data sets. Finally, we compared our approach with the PCA K-means method to show the effectiveness of the method.

Ship Detection Using Visual Saliency Map and Mean Shift Algorithm (시각집중과 평균이동 알고리즘을 이용한 선박 검출)

  • In this paper, a video based ship detection method is proposed to monitor port efficiently. Visual saliency map algorithm and mean shift algorithm is applied to detect moving ships don't include background information which is difficult to track moving ships. It is easy to detect ships at the port using saliency map algorithm, because it is very effective to extract saliency object from background. To remove background information in the saliency region, image segmentation and clustering using mean shift algorithm is used. As results of detecting simulation with images of a camera installed at the harbor, it is shown that the proposed method is effective to detect ships.
