The purpose of this study is to research and analyze the distribution of night illumination level at urban neighborhood parks and to show its characteristics. And this is used basic data ensuring safety and satisfying aesthetic and psychological desires of people who use urban neighborhood parks at night. To research and analyze the distribution of illumination level at urban neighborhood parks at night. To research and analyze the distribution of illumination level at urban neighborhood parks, I selected 8 urban neighborhood parks as the subject of research in this study, set the measuring standard of illumination level, and measured the illumination level by the measuring standard. The results of this study are as follows; 1. Currently, total average illumination level of urban neighborhood parks was lower than the minimum standard of illumination level I KS A 3011-1993. 2. Average illumination level of each place in urban neighborhood parks appeared variously from low level to high level. But this was lower than the minimum standard illumination level in KS A3011-1993 like total average illumination level. 3. The higher was total average illumination level of urban neighborhood parks, the more various was brightness of places. Although users' aesthetic and mental desire or behavioral aspect relate with safety cannot be found by only survey and analyses of illumination level, it is judged that first, illumination level of the standard of the lightness should be analyzed to find user's mental states and behaviors in external space at night. Therefore, it is considered that this study, which analyzed characteristics illumination level as basic data, has a significance. The study continuing for other illuminative environmental factors suitable in the place is required because the brightness of places may not be measured by only illumination level. And the proper illumination level in outdoor places should be showed in considering psychological and behavioral aspects of human as people may have their own sense of brightness.
In this paper, an easy-to-use measurement device for illumination distribution is developed. The device consists of a sensor array module, a control module, and a PC interface. The sensor array module incorporates CIE 1931 color sensors and the ARM-based 96 MHz microcontroller in the control module for measurement and data processing. The sensor array module contains 64 color sensors arranged in a $16{\times}4$ array. The sensitivity of the sensor array module can be adjusted depending on the illumination level to be measured. The measurement data and control signals are exchanged via USB 2.0 standard. To demonstrate the performance of the device, the illumination distribution is measured for colors of red, green, and blue and is graphically shown. The device can be used for measurement of the illumination distribution, design and adjustment of LED illumination.
This paper gives a review on three illumination issues of face tracking on smart phones: dark scenes, sudden lighting change and backlit effect. First, we propose a fast and robust face tracking method utilizing continuous adaptive mean shift algorithm (CAMSHIFT) and CbCr skin locus. Initially, the skin locus obtained from training video data. After that, a modified CAMSHIFT version based on the skin locus is accordingly provided. Second, we suggest an enhancement method to increase the chance of detecting faces, an important initialization step for face tracking, under dark illumination. The proposed method works comparably with traditional CAMSHIFT or particle filter, and outperforms these methods when dealing with our public video data with the three illumination issues mentioned above.
In this study, we employed Manchester code for illumination control and flicker prevention of the light-emitting diode (LED) used in a visible light communication (VLC) system. In the VLC transmitter, the duty factor of the Manchester code was utilized for illumination control; in the VLC receiver, the spike signal from an RC-high pass filter was utilized to recover the transmitted signal whilst suppressing the 120-Hz noise arising from adjacent lighting lamps. Instead of the clock being transmitted in a separate channel, a syncmark signal was transmitted in front of each data byte and used as the reference time for transforming the Manchester code to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data in the receiver. In experiments, the LED illumination was controlled in the range of approximately 12-84% of the constant wave (CW) light via changing of the duty factor from 10% to 90%. This scheme is useful for constructing indoor wireless sensor networks using LED light that is flicker-free and presents capability for illumination control.

In this study, we review the ground-based whole-sky camera (WSC), which is developed to continuously capture day and night cloud images using the illumination data from a precision Lightmeter with a high temporal resolution. The WSC is combined with a precision Lightmeter developed in IYA (International Year of Astronomy) for analysis of an artificial light pollution at night and a DSLR camera equipped with a fish-eye lens widely applied in observational astronomy. The WSC is designed to adjust the shutter speed and ISO of the equipped camera according to illumination data in order to stably capture cloud images. And Raspberry Pi is applied to control automatically the related process of taking cloud and sky images every minute under various conditions depending on illumination data from Lightmeter for 24 hours. In addition, it is utilized to post-process and store the cloud images and to upload the data to web page in real time. Finally, we check the technical possibility of the method to observe the cloud distribution (cover, type, height) quantitatively and objectively by the optical system, through analysis of the captured cloud images from the developed device.
In this paper, surface defects and typical illumination mechanisms for steel plates are analyzed, and then optimum illumination mechanism is selected using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) synthetic images and discriminant measure (DM). The DWT synthetic images are generated using component images decomposed by Haar wavelet transform filter. The best synthetic image according to surface defects is determined using signal to noise ratio (SNR). The optimum illumination mechanism is selected by applying discriminant measure (DM) to the best synthetic images. The DM is applied using the tenengrad-euclidian function. The DM is evaluated as the degree of contrast using the defect boundary information. The performance of the optimum illumination mechanism is verified by quantitative data and intuitive image looks.

Face recognition technique is very popular for a personal information security and user identification in recent years. However, the face recognition system is very hard to be implemented due to the difficulty where change in illumination, pose and facial expression. In this paper, we consider that an illumination change causing the variety of face appearance, virtual image data is generated and added to the D-LDA which was selected as the most suitable feature extractor. A less sensitive recognition system in illumination is represented in this paper. This way that consider nature of several illumination directions generate the virtual training image data that considered an illumination effect of the directions and the change of illumination density. As result of experiences, D-LDA has a less sensitive property in an illumination through ORL, Yale University and Pohang University face database.
This study examined the changes in the walking pattern during level walking under low illumination conditions. Fourteen male subjects ($22.1{\pm}2.21$ years, $174{\pm}3.74\;cm$, $68.86{\pm}10.81\;kg$) with normal vision and no disabilities were enrolled in this study. All experiments were performed on a level walkway with three conditions: normal walking (preferred & low speed) and walking with low illumination. 3D motion capturing system was used for acquisition and analysis of the walking motion data with a sampling frequency of 120Hz. The walking speed, normalized jerk(NJ) at the center of mass(COM), wrist and heel, knee and elbow joint angle, ratio of the knee joint angle to elbow joint angle and the toe clearance on stance phase were used to compare the differences in walking pattern between the two illumination conditions, The results showed that the walking speed and joint angles decreased in low illumination, whereas the NJ and toe minimum clearance increased. In low illumination, most variables were similar to effects of low speed walking, but toe clearance was different from the effects of low speed. These results can be used as primary data for examining the changes in the level walking pattern of young adults under low illumination. Further study will be needed to compare these results in young adults with those in the elderly.
In this study, we utilized the duty factor of the transition frequency modulation (TFM) for the illumination control of the light emitting diode (LED) light in visible light communication (VLC). The average optical power is linearly proportional to the duty factor in TFM waveforms. We used the transition frequencies of Na=5 and Nb=1 for the high and the low bits, respectively, of the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data in the VLC transmitter. A resistor and capacitor high-pass filter (HPF) was used in the VLC receiver to eliminate the 120 Hz optical noise from adjacent lighting lamps and the spikes at the HPF output were used to recover NRZ data from the TFM waveform. In experiments, the illumination of the LED light was controlled in the range of 25-90% of the constant-wave optical power by changing the duty factor of the TFM waveforms.
