The success of coarse-mesh nodal solution methods provides strong motivation for finding homogenized parameters which, when used in global nodal calculation, will reproduce exactly all average nodal reaction rates for large nodes. Two approximate theories for finding these ideal parameters, namely, simplified equivalence theory and approximate node equivalence theory, are described herein and then applied to the PWR benchmark problem. Nodal code, ANM, is used for the global calculation as well as for the homogenization calculation. From the comparative analysis, it is recommended that homogenization be carried out only for the unique type of fuel assemblies and for core boundary color-sets. The use of approximate homogenized cross-sections and approximate discontinuity factors predicts nodal powers with maximum error of 0.8% and criticality within 0.1% error relative to the fine-mesh KIDD calculations.
The effect of vertical riser support system on the dynamic behaviour of a classical spar platform is investigated. Spar platform generally uses buoyancy-can riser support system, but as water depth gets deeper the alternative riser support system is required due to safety and cost issues. The alternative riser support system is to hang risers off the spar platform using pneumatic cylinders rather than the buoyancy-can. The existing numerical model for hull/mooring/riser coupled dynamics analysis treats riser as an elastic rod truncated at the keel (truncated riser model), thus, in this model, the effect of riser support system can not be modeled correctly. Due to this reason, the truncated riser model tends to overestimate the spar pitch and heave motion. To evaluate more realistic global spar motion, mechanical coupling among risers, guide frames and support cylinders inside of spar moon-pool should be modeled. In the newly developed model, the risers are extended through the moon-pool by using nonlinear finite element methods with realistic boundary condition at multiple guide frames. In the simulation, the vertical tension from pneumatic cylinders is modeled by using ideal-gas equation and the vertical tension from buoyancy-cans is modeled as constant top tension. The different dynamic characteristics between buoyancy-can riser support system and pneumatic riser support system are extensively studied. The alternative riser support system tends to increase spar heave motion and needs damper system to reduce the spar heave motion.
Solar cells made of the edge-defined film-fed growth Si are characterized using current-voltage, surface photovoltage, electron beam induced current, electron microprobe, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscattering. The weak temperature dependence of the I-V curves in the EFG solar cells is due to a voltage variable shunt resistance giving higher diode ideality factors than the ideal one. The voltage variable shunt resistance is modeled by a modified recombination mechanism which includes carrier tunneling to distributed impurity energy states in the band gap within the space-charge region. The junction integrity and the substrate quality are characterized simultaneously by combining I-V and surface photovoltage (SPV) measurements. The diode ideality factors and the surface photovoltages characterize the junction integrity while the SPV diffusion lengths characterizes the substrate quality. Most of the measured samples show the voltage variable shunt resistance although how serious it is depends on the solar cell efficiency. The voltage variable shunt resistance is understood as one of the most important factors of the degradation of EFG solar cells.

Ambient backscatter communication is limited to channel estimation technique through a pilot signal, which is a channel estimation method in current RF communication, due to transmission power efficiency. In a limited transmission power environment, the research of traditional ambient backscatter communication has been studied assuming that it is an ideal channel without signal distortions due to channel conditions. In this paper, we propose an expectation-maximization(EM) algorithm, one of the blind channel estimation techniques, as a channel estimation method in ambient backscatter communication system which is the state of channel following normal distribution. In the proposed system model, the simulations confirm that channel estimate through EM algorithm is approaching the lower bound of the mean square error compared with the Bayesian Cramer-Rao Boundary(BCRB) to check performance. It shows that the channel parameter can be estimated in the ambient backscatter communication system.
Korea has persisted in the notion of "ethnic nationalism." That is "one race, one people, one language" as a homogeneous entity. This social ideal of unity prevails, even in overseas Korean communities formed by voluntary and involuntary displacement in the turmoil of modern history: communities made intermittent with the Japanese colonial occupation and with postcolonial encounters with the West. Given that the Korean people suffered from the trauma of deprivation of the language caused by the loss of the nation, nation has been equated with the language. Accordingly, "these bearers of a homeland" are also firm Korean language holders. The linguistic patriotism of unity based on the intertwining of "mother tongue" and "father country" has become prevalent in the collective memory of the people of the Korean diaspora. Korean American literature has grappled with this concept of the national history of Korea and the Korean language. The aesthetics of Korean American literature has been marked by an influx of literary resources of 'Korea' in sensibilities and structure of feelings; Korean myth, folk lore, songs, humor, traditional stories, manners, customs and historic moments. An experimental use of the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, written down as pronounced, provides an ethnic flavor in the midst of the English texts. Despite its national framework of mind, however, Korean American literature as an interstitial art reveals a keen awareness of inbetweenness, and transnational hybrid identities. By exploring the complex interrelationships of cultural and linguistic boundary-crossing practices in Korean American literature, this paper argues that the poetics of the Korean diaspora challenges the closed structure of identity formation, and offers a transnational sphere to deconstruct a rigidly demarcated national ideology of "one race, one people, one language," for the world literary history.
The purpose of this paper is to contend the importance of resurrection of fluid identity and ecological imagination for making the habitable biosphere in Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping. Ruth as a narrator suggests the future-oriented vision that the environment and nature(mother) can be resurrected, crossing Fingerbone bridge of the boundary line of society/nature as a faithful follower of her aunt Sylvie and becoming the existence with a transparent voice despite of her absence. This novel is to rewrite the American pastoral. Based on the patriarchical way despite of the absence of Edmund Foster, Sylvia's conventional housekeeping is to divide between inside and outside of the house. Nevertheless, Sylvia's relentless efforts to keep her house intact turns out to be fragile. Contrasting with Sylvia, Sylvie's housekeeping is to recognize the continuity of inside and outside. She willingly accepts the reconciliation of the self, the nature and the society. After Ruth and Lucille's staying at night in the lake, they are diverged into going their own way. Ruth accepts Sylvie as a substitute mother. Lucille leaves the house voluntarily and go to her Home Economics teacher, Miss Royce, pursuing the ideal mother of symbolic society. Sylvie and Ruth has the more intimate bond, with their trip to the deserted house in the valley. Ruth meditates on the non-solidity of house and the resurrection of her family. Leaving their house to escape from the town people's legal enforcement, Sylvie and Ruth become transients. Although their history is completed by the drown-death publicly, they always want to visit Lucille's well kept house in Fingerbone. Therefore the method for making Ruth and Sylvie as the existences of ecological imagination return to the real world is to accept the reconciliation of nature and society. This novel is not limited as the binary opposition of vagrance/stability and transience/durability. The significant element of fluid identity can be composed of the interactions with transience and stability.
Composite structures have been designed by stacking the laminae with different stacking angles to meet the required mechanical performance. Although the induced stresses on the composite structures under the external loads usually differ depending on the location, we determined the stacking sequence based on the maximum stress, which leads to low efficiency and generally is not the optimum design. Recently, piecewise integrated composites (PICs) were suggested for solving this inefficiency. PICs assume the perfect bonding between adjacent pieces, but this is ideal and hard to accomplish. Therefore, the overlap at the boundary is essential to prevent separation from each other. In this study, we investigated the effect of the overlap design on the impact failure mode of PIC plates. We fabricated the sample composite plates with different overlap designs using the fast curing carbon prepreg and conducted the impact tests according to ASTM D 7136. We found that PICs had different failure modes according to the overlap design, which lead the changes of absorbed impact energies as well as impact load curves.

Final goal of this research is to establish the database for correlation factors which connects the test and analysis results of shear buckling allowables for composite plate. To accomplish the goal, extensive test and analysis works are required. In this paper, as the first step, a frame-type fixture for shear buckling test was designed and validated through the test and analysis. Final configuration of the fixture were determined via parametric study on the effect of specimen size, cross-sectional dimensions, and number of fastening bolts on the shear buckling load. Results of the study showed the designed frame-type fixture successfully induces the shear buckling of composite plate. However, there were deviations between the test results and analysis results for ideal case under pure shear load, which were mainly caused by the difference in plate sizes for both cases. The difference were larger in the plates with larger hole and simply supported boundary condition. It is concluded from the results that while the designed fixture can be used for the clamped plates with acceptable accuracy, it shows larger difference in the simply supported plates.

Supersonic jet technology using high pressures has been popularly utilized in diverse industrial and engineering areas related to working fluids. In this study, to consider the effects of a shock wave caused by supersonic jet flow from a high pressure pipe, the SST turbulent flow model provided in the ANSYS FLUENT v.16 was applied and the flow characteristics of the pressure ratio and Mach number were analyzed in accordance with the working fluids (air, oxygen, and hydrogen). Before carrying out CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, it was presumed that the inlet gas temperature was 300 K and pressure ratio was 5 : 1 as the boundary conditions. The density function was derived from the ideal gas law and the viscosity function was derived from Sutherland viscosity law. The pressure ratio along the ejection distance decreased more in the lower density working fluids. In the case of the higher density working fluids, however, the Mach number was lower. This shows that the density of the working fluids has a considerable effect on the shock wave. Therefore, the reliability of the analysis results were improved by experiments and CFD analysis showed that supersonic jet flow affects the shock wave by changing shape and diameter of the jet, pressure ratio, etc. according to working fluids.

In bridge performance assessments, a new load carrying capacity evaluation model of simple bridges was proposed, which is based on the developed simple support impact factor spectrum. In this paper, a conservative assumption that the inner span with the both ends fixed boundary condition is ideal for applying the impact factor response spectrum for continuous bridges. The impact factor response spectrum has been proposed based on this assumption. The response spectrum by comparing the numerical analysis result and actual measurement data verified the applicability. The analysis was loading the moving load of DB-24 in a six-span continuous bridge, which was the same as the actual measurement data, the dynamic response was measured in the fourth span. The frequency of the bridge was obtained by FFT on the acceleration response and the span-frequency of sample bridge was calculated by the frequency. The impact factor of the sample bridge was determined by applying the span-frequency of the bridge to the proposed response spectrum; it was similar to the result of comparing the actual measured impact factor. Therefore, the method using the impact factor response spectrum based on the frequency response of both ends-fixed beam was found to be applicable to an actual continuous bridge.
