  • Recently fuel cell is considered to be a new technology that can substitute the ICE(Internal Combustion Engine) as well as overcome environmental issues. In military applications, fuel cell has an unique advantages, which are quietness, namely, stealth. The environmental requirement such as shock and vibration in military application, however, is very severe comparing to civilian demand. Especially, the safety concerning hydrogen storage is the most important problem. Among the candidate methods to store hydrogen, the metal hydride storage is promising method owing to the storage mechanism of chemical absorption of hydrogen to metal hydrides. In this study, the new composition of Ti-Zr type metal hydride(A composition) was suggested and investigated to increase the hydrogen storage capacity. For comparison, the hydrogen charge-discharge properties were investigated with the commercialized Ti-Zr type metal hydride(B composition) using PCT(Pressure-Composition-Temperature) measurement. Also two hydrogen storage cylinders were loaded with each metal hydride and their hydrogen charging and discharging characteristics were investigated. As a result, it was found that the new Ti-Zr type metal hydride has a slightly higher hydrogen storage capacity compared to commercial Ti-Zr type metal hydride.

  • To examine the quality changes of three typical fishes under usual storage conditions during marketing, we determined the total bacterial counts and pH values during storage of mackerel, croaker, and saury. Mackerels were stored at 0$^{\circ}C$ and on ice at 19$^{\circ}C$, which is the usual storage condition in a local market and croakers and saury were stored at 0$^{\circ}C$ and 4$^{\circ}C$. Total bacterial counts of mackerel, croaker, and saury were 3,2${\times}$10$^3$, 2.9${\times}$10$^3$, and 2.8 x 10$^4$CFU/g at the time of storage respectively. Total bacterial counts of mackerel stored on ice at 19$^{\circ}C$ increased during storage and reached to 8.4 x 10$\^$6/ CFU/g at day 6, while those stored at 0$^{\circ}C$ decreased up to 2 days of storage and increased to 5.6 ${\times}$ 10$^4$CFU/g. For croaker and saury, total bacterial counts at 0$^{\circ}C$ were 2.5 ${\times}$ 10$\^$5/ and 2.1 x 10$\^$5/ CFU/g at day 6, respectively, while those stored at 4$^{\circ}C$ had 3.6 x 10$\^$6/ and 2.6 ${\times}$ 10$\^$5/ CFU/g. the pH value or mackerel was 5.56 at the time or storage, yet it increased to 6.04. The pH changes of croaker and saury had a similar pattern with that of mackerel, which increased with time of storage. These results suggest that storage of fishes at 0$^{\circ}C$ should be better than those at 4$^{\circ}C$ or on ice at 19$^{\circ}C$ in terms of microbial safety as well as quality and shelf-life of fishes.

  • The ice storage system uses water for low temperature latent heat storage. However, a refrigerator capacity is increased and COP is decreased due to supercooling of water in the course of phase change from solid to liquid. This study investigates the cooling characteristics of the TMA-water clathrate compound including TMA (Tri-methyl-amine, $(CH_3)_3N)$ of $20{\sim}25wt%$ as a low temperature latent heat storage material. The results showed that the phase change temperature and the specific heat is increased and the supercooling degree is decreased as the weight concentration of TMA increased. Especially, the clathrate compound containing TMA 25wt% has the average phase change temperature of $5.8^{\circ}C$, the supercooling degree of $8.0^{\circ}C$ and the specific heat of 3.499 kJ/kgK in the cooling process. This can lead to reduction of operation time of refrigerator in low temperature latent heat storage system and efficiency improvement of refrigerator COP and overall system. Therefore, energy saving and improvement of utilization efficiency are expected.

  • This paper presents some design guidelines for using cold air/water distribution to cool commercial and industrial buildings. Cold air /water distribution systems provide primary air/water for space conditioning at nominal temperature between $3^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ ($4{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ might be recommendable for better selection). By using lower temperature primary air/water equipment could be downsized, means lower first costs, and often reduce annual energy costs up to 50% less than that of the conventional ($13^{\circ}C$) system. This concept takes full advantages of the $2{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ chilled water (brine) available with ice storate systems.

  • Supercooled type ice storage system with aqueous solution (or water) may have trouble with non-uniform release of supercooling even though it contributes to the simplicity of system and ecological improvement. The non-uniform release increases the instability of the system because it may cause an ice blockage in pipe or cooling part. In order to suppress the release of the supercooling, a cooling experiment was tried to an ethylene glycol(EG) 3 mass% solution corresponding with pressurization. Also, the frequency ratio of the release of the supercooling was measured to the pressurization from 101 to 505 kPa. At results, the frequency ratio of supercooling release tends to decrease as the pressure of the aqueous solution increased in each cooling rate. Moreover, it tends to decrease as the cooling rate of the solution decreased in each pressure.

  • The ice thermal storage system is to use consolation latent heat of water. But, supercooling phenomenon of water during phase change is to increase the cooling capacity and to decrease COP of the refrigerator. Furthermore, this causes the operation cost of system to increase and the efficiency of energy to decrease. Therefore, the better thermal storage material than the water is required. The purpose of this study is to improve supercooling characteristics and thermal properties of TMA 30wt% clathrate by using Ethanol.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of dandelion leaf, root and whole part extracts on the physicochemical characteristics of pork patties stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. Four types of pork patties were evaluated: ice-water-added (T0), dandelion leaf extract (T1), dandelion root extract (T2) and dandelion whole part extract (T3). The pH decreased significantly during storage, but increased after 10 days of storage. The pH was highest in T0 during storage. The L value of T0 increased whereas T1, T2 and T3 did not significantly changed during storage. The a value decreased with a longer storage period, and the a values for T1, T2 and T3 were higher than that of T0 during storage. The b value did not change significantly during storage. The TBARS increased with a longer storage period, and the values for T0, T1, T2 and T3 were 0.87, 0.29, 0.47 and 0.31 mg MA/kg, respectively, after 10 days of storage. The VBN content value of T0 increased, but those of T1, T2 and T3 did not significantly change during storage. The water holding capacity of T0 decreased, but those of T1, T2 and T3 did not significantly change during storage. Cooking loss increased during storage and that of T0 was higher than those of T1, T2 and T3. Hardness and chewiness decreased while springiness and cohesiveness increased during storage.

  • To investigate the quality changes during frozen storage, top shell, Omphalius pfeifferi capenteri, was stored at -18$^{\circ}C$, -$25^{\circ}C$ and -3$0^{\circ}C$ immediately after shelling and water holding capacity, protein composition and histological features were examined with the lapsed period of the storage. During the storage period, amount of free drip was increased with higher frozen temperature and longer frozen period, but with the longer storage period, the lower water holding capacity was observed. The extractability and composition of muscle protein, sarcoplasmic protein and stroma protein were rather stable regardless of frozen temperature and frozen storage period. However, the extractability of myofibrillar protein was decreased with higher frozen temperature and longer frozen storage period. On the changes of muscle tissue structure, following points were observed. 1) In the muscle tissue structure of fresh sample, fine muscle fiber was closely distributed all over the tissue regardless of cross and longitudinal section. 2) In tissue structure under frozen state, it was observed that ice crystals apparently grew with the higher storage temperature. Empty spaces between muscle bundles which wee formed by aggregations of muscle fiber were observed after 3 months storage at -18$^{\circ}C$ . 3) Tissue structure in thawed state was restored satisfactorily after 1 month storage regardless of storage temperature. After 3 months storage at -3$0^{\circ}C$, muscle tissue was well restored, but at -18$^{\circ}C$, empty spaces were apparent due to incomplete restoration.

  • The experiments were carried out to find how the processing of ascidian (Halocynthia roretzi) was affected by the frozen storage. The quality of ascidian which takes the shell-on was changed quickly in the frozen storage. The causes of the change were as follows: 1. the damage caused by the ice crystal in the muscle, 2. a lot of drips after thawing, 3. the discoloration of the muscle after thawing. On the contrary, the quality of ascidian which takes the shell-off was even better in color, texture, yield and drips after 60 days of the frozen storage. But the muscle was blackened after that.
