  • The operating torque and tribological characteristics of the cam/tappet system in an I.C. engine have an important effect on engine efficiency. In this paper, we measured the torque of cam/tappet system with respect to the oil temperature and camshaft speed to characterize the tribological behavior. Also, accelerated test was performed to analyze the wear characteristics of cam/tappet interface. The torque of the cam/tappet system decreased with respect to camshaft speed and was not significantly affected by the oil temperature. The results of accelerated test showed that the running-in wear occurred during the tests and the center of the tappet was mainly damaged by the rolling and sliding friction.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate screw joint stability and sagittal fit between internal connection implant fixtures of two different manufacturers and customized abutments. Materials and methods: Internal connection implant systems from two different manufacturers (Biomet 3i system, Astra Tech system) were selected for this study (n=24 for each implant system, total n=48). For 3i implant system, half of the implants were connected with Ti ready-made abutments and the other half implants were connected with Ti CAD-CAM custom ones of domestic-make (Myplant, Raphabio Co., Seoul, Korea) and were classified into Group 1 and Group 2 respectively. Astra implants were divided into Group 3 and Group 4 in the same way. Micro-CT sagittal imaging was performed for fit analysis of interfaces and preloading reverse torque values (RTV) were measured. Results: In the contact length of fixture-abutment interface, there were no significant differences not only between Group 1 and Group 2 but also between Group 3 and Group 4 (Mann-Whitney test, P>.05). However, Group 2 and Group 4 showed higher contact length significantly than Group 1 and Group 3 in abutment-screw interface as well as fixture-screw one (Mann-Whitney test, P<.05). In addition, RTV was lower in CAD-CAM custom abutments compared to ready-made ones (Student t-test, P<.05). Conclusion: It is considered that domestically manufactured CAD-CAM custom abutments have similar fit at the fixture abutment interface and it could be used clinically. However, RTV of CAD-CAM custom abutments should be improved for the increase of clinical application.

  • A barrel cam is used as a very important part of an index drive unit. The index drive unit must have an intermittent-rotational motion. The barrel typed cam and roller gear mechanism has the advantages of high reliability to perform a prescribed motion of a follower. This paper proposes a new method for the shape design of the barrel cam and also a CAD program is developed by using the proposed method. As defined in this paper, the relative velocity method for the shape design calculates the relative velocity of the follower versus cam at a center of roller, and then detemines a contact point by using the geometric relationships and the kinematic constraints, where the direction of the relative velocity must be parallel to a common tangential line at the contact point of two independent bodies, i.e. the cam and the follower. Then, the shape of the cam is defined by the coordinate transformation of the trace of the contact points. This paper presents shape design of the barrel cam in order to prove the accuracy of the proposed methods

  • In this study, stress-deformation characteristics of buried pipe are studied. A numerical model, i.e., Egg-Cam Clay is introduced for the analysis of soft clay. Cam Clay model has a difficulty in analyzing soft clay that has two properties of shrinkage and swelling. Egg-Cam Clay model is modified format of Cam Clay model. In addition, Mohr-Coulomb model using finite element method is employed to verify effects of the geogrid, EPS geofoam. Stress deformation of several cases of pipe and other reinforcemnt material combinations are analyzed. Geofoam and geogrid have positive effects on the deformation characteristics.

  • Objectives Although clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are becoming crucial in medical decision-making worldwide, there are very few development guidelines for children. Therefore, this preliminary study aimed to assess the status of worldwide except east asia-CPGs recommending complementary and alternative medicine interventions (CAM-i) in children worldwide except east asia in order to help developing Korean medicine CPGs (KMCPGs) for children. Methods To identify the current status of CPGs including CAM-i that have been developed so far, the author searched the related databases, and selected CPGs for children. The data related to the status of evidence-based CPGs, the materials related to the characteristics of CAM-i, and the details of recommendations for CAM-i were selected from the obtained findings. Results A total of 106 CPGs were identified based on the searches, of which 11 were finally selected as pediatric CPGs. These pediatric CPGs have been developed since 2007 to target various diseases. The countries developing these CPGs include the United Kingdom, Scotland, Australia, and the United States, with the U.K. having the largest share. The majority of CPGs used MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane library as databases. The most frequently recommended topic was acupuncture, followed by herbal medicine. Many CPGs suggested that more research was needed. Conclusions Through this study, the author was able to identify the characteristics of the developed pediatric CPGs that include CAM-i. More preceding studies are needed for the development of pediatric KMCPGs. It is hoped that this report can be used as the foundation for future development of pediatric KMCPGs.

  • This paper is concerned on kinematic analysis and simulation of an automatic feeding mechanism subjected by the motion of a curvilinear inverse can. The curvilinear cam is rotated by positioning a translating roller and the automatic feeding mechanism is moved to the sliding position by the motion of a campin fixed on the curvilinear cam. The curvilinear cam consists of two arcs of circles and two straight lines. The modular approach is used for the kinematic analysis of the feeding mechanism. As the first part of the paper for the motion simulation of the cam-feeding system, this paper discusses the algorithm to simulate the motion of the cam-feeding mechanism. The second part of the paper presents the state-of-art for the graphics-oriented CAD technique,
