Semi-rigid connection modeling for steel frameworks

  • This article provides a discussion of the mathematic modeling of connections for designing and qualifying structures, systems, and components subject to monotonic or cyclic loading. To characterize the force-deformation behavior of connections under monotonic loading, a review of the Ramberg-Osgood, Richard-Abbott, and Menegotto-Pinto models is conducted, and it is shown that these nonlinear functions can be mathematically derived by scaling up or down a linear force-deformation function. A generalized four-parameter model for simulating connection behavior is investigated to facilitate nonlinear regression analysis. In order to perform seismic analysis of frameworks, a hysteretic model accounting for loading, unloading, and reloading is described using the established monotonic model. For preliminary analysis, a method is provided to quickly determine the model parameters that fit approximately with the observed data. To reach more accurate values of the parameters, the methods of nonlinear regression analysis are investigated and the modified Levenberg-Marquardt and separable nonlinear least-square algorithms are applied in determining the model parameters. Example case studies illustrate the procedure for the computation through the use of experimental/analytical data taken form the literature. Transformation of connection curves from the three-parameter model to the four-parameter model for structural analysis is conducted based on the modeling of connections subject to fire.

Seismic fragility analysis of conventional and viscoelastically damped moment resisting frames

  • This paper presents the results of an analytical study on seismic reliability of viscoelastically damped frame systems in comparison with that of conventional moment resisting frame systems. In order to exhibit the reliability of the frame systems with viscoelastic dampers, seismic reliability analyses were carried out for steel framed buildings, 5 and 12 storeys in height, designed as: (a) Case 1: Conventional moment resisting frame, (b) Case 2: Frame with viscoelastic dampers providing supplemental effective damping ratio of 10%, and (c) Case 3: Frame with viscoelastic dampers providing supplemental effective damping ratio of 20%. Nonlinear time history analyses were utilized to develop seismic fragility curves whilst monitoring various performance objectives. To obtain robust estimators of the seismic reliability, a database including 15 natural earthquake ground motion records with markedly different characteristics was employed in the fragility analysis. The results indicate that depending upon the supplemental effective damping ratio, frames designed with viscoelastic dampers have considerably lower annual probability of exceedance of performance limit states for structural components, showing up to a five-fold reduction in comparison to conventionally designed moment resisting frame system.

Seismic behavior of reinforced concrete column-steel beam joints with and without reinforced concrete slab

  • As the key part in the reinforced concrete column-steel beam (RCS) frame, the beam-column joints are usually subjected the axial force, shear force and bending moment under seismic actions. With the aim to study the seismic behavior of RCS joints with and without RC slab, the quasi-static cyclic tests results, including hysteretic curves, slab crack development, failure mode, strain distributions, etc. were discussed in detail. It is shown that the composite action between steel beam and RC slab can significantly enhance the initial stiffness and loading capacity, but lead to a changing of the failure mode from beam flexural failure to the joint shear failure. Based on the analysis of shear failure mechanism, the calculation formula accounting for the influence of RC slab was proposed to estimate shear strength of RCS joint. In addition, the finite element model (FEM) was developed by ABAQUS and a series of parametric analysis model with RC slab was conducted to investigate the influence of the face plates thickness, slab reinforcement diameter, beam web strength and inner concrete strength on the shear strength of joints. Finally, the proposed formula in this paper is verified by the experiment and FEM parametric analysis results.

극취성·전단·휨파괴형 수평저항시스템으로 구성된 저층 철근콘크리트 건물의 요구 내력 스펙트럼 (Demand Strength Spectrums of Low-Rise Reinforced Concrete Buildings Consisted of Extremely Brittle, Shear and Flexural Failure Systems)

  • 대다수의 저층 RC 건물은 다양한 수평저항시스템으로 이루어져 있으며, 이것들은 각기 다른 변위에서 파괴될 것으로 판단된다. 그 가운데에서도, 강성 및 강도는 높지만 소성영역에서 극취성적인 파괴성상을 나타내는 극단주, 전단벽 등의 전단파괴형 부재 및 비교적 강성 및 강도는 낮지만 연성 능력이 탁월한 기둥 등의 휨파괴형 부재는 전형적인 수평저항시스템으로 다수의 피해지진에 의하여 그것들의 중요성이 대두되었다. 극단주, 전단벽, 휨기둥 등과 같이 서로 다른 성질의 역학적 특성을 가지는 내진 요소로 혼합된 저층 RC 건물의 내진성능을 평가하기 위해서는, 각각 부재의 내력과 변형 능력이 건물 전체의 내진성능에 어떻게 영향을 미치는가를 우선적으로 검토하는 것이 필요하다. 본 연구는 극단주 (극취성파괴형 부재), 전단벽 (전단파괴형 부재) 및 휨기둥 (휨파괴형 부재)이 혼합된 저층 RC 건물의 내진성능 평가법 개발 및 내진설계를 위한 기본적인 자료를 제공하는 것을 주목적으로, 각각 파괴형 부재의 강도와 변형능력 사이의 상관관계를 파악하여, 이것들의 비율이 건물 전체의 내진성능에 어떻게 영향을 미치는가를 비선형 지진응답해석을 실시 검토하여 최종적으로 극취성 전단 휨파괴형 수평저항시스템으로 구성된 저층 RC 건물의 요구 내력 스펙트럼을 제안하였다. 본 연구에서 제안된 요구 내력은 특정 지역에서 요구하는 지진수준에 대하여 지진발생시 특정 연성비 이내로 머물게 하는 하한내력의 범위를 파악할 수 있으므로 요구 내력 스펙트럼은 내진성능 평가 및 내진설계의 기본적인 자료로서 활용 가능하다고 판단된다.

필로티 구조를 가진 저층 철근콘크리트 전단벽식 건물의 요구내력 스펙트럼 (Required Strength Spectrum of Low-Rise Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall Buildings with Pilotis)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 하부층에 필로티 구조, 상부층에 전단벽식구조를 가진 저층 철근콘크리트 건물의 내진설계 및 내진성능 평가를 위한 기본적인 자료를 제공하는 것으로서, 비선형 지진응답해석을 실시하여 각 층의 내력과 연성율 사이의 상관관계를 파악하여, 이것들의 비율이 건물 전체의 내진성능에 어떻게 영향을 미치는가를 검토하였다. 본 연구에서는 필로티 구조를 가진 저층 철근콘크리트 전단벽식 건물의 특성을 2질점계로 치환하였으며, 하부층인 필로티 구조는 휨파괴형으로 상부층인 전단벽식 구조는 전단파괴형 시스템으로 각각 모델링하였다. 또한 각층의 복원력 특성으로는 필로티 구조는 Degrading Trilinear Model(휨파괴형), 상부층은 Origin Oriented Model(전단파괴형)을 선정하였다. 상기 복원력 특성은 각 층의 보유내력에 의하여 변화를 하며, 지진응답해석용 입력지진파로는 8개의 피해지진의 가속도 성분을 선정하여 이들 가속도 성분의 최대가속도를 0.1g, 0.2g, 0.3g로 표준화 하였다. 각각 지진강도수준에 따라 지진 응답해석을 실시하여 하부층 필로티 구조와 상부층 전단벽식 구조의 내력비와 응답 연성율 사이의 상관관계를 파악하였다. 최종적으로 특정 연성율을 위한 필로티 구조를 가진 저층 철근콘크리트 전단벽식 건물의 요구내력을 산정하여 요구내력 스펙트럼(Required Strength Spectrum)을 제안하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 요구내력스펙트럼은 특정 지역에서 요구하는 지진수준에 대하여 지진발생시 특정 연성율 이내로 머물게 하는 하한내력의 범위를 파악할 수 있는 등, 연구결과는 필로티 구조를 가진 철근콘크리트 전단벽식 건물의 내진성능평가 및 내진설계의 기본적인 자료로서 활용 가능하다고 사료된다.

Experimental study on shear capacity of SRC joints with different arrangement and sizes of cross-shaped steel in column

  • The seismic performance of the ordinary steel reinforced concrete (SRC) columns has no significant improvement compared to the reinforced concrete (RC) columns mainly because I, H or core cross-shaped steel cannot provide sufficient confinement for core concrete. Two improved SRC columns by constructing with new-type shaped steel were put forward on this background, and they were named as enlarging cross-shaped steel and diagonal cross-shaped steel for short. The seismic behavior and carrying capacity of new-type SRC columns have been researched theoretically and experimentally, while the shear behavior remains unclear when the new-type columns are joined onto SRC beams. This paper presents an experimental study to investigate the shear capacity of new-type SRC joints. For this purpose, four new-type and one ordinary SRC joints under low reversed cyclic loading were tested, and the failure patterns, load-displacement hysteretic curves, joint shear deformation and steel strain were also observed. The ultimate shear force of joint specimens was calculated according to the beam-end counterforce, and effects of steel shape, load angel and structural measures on shear capacity of joints were analyzed. The test results indicate that: (1) the new-type SRC joints display shear failure pattern and has higher shear capacity than the ordinary one; (2) the oblique specimens have good bearing capacity if designed reasonably; and (3) the two proposed construction measures have little effect on the shear capacity of SRC joints embedded with diagonal cross-shaped steel. Based on the mechanism observed from the test, the formulas for calculating ultimate shear capacity considering the main factors (steel web, stirrup and axial compression ratio) were derived, and the calculated results agreed well with the experimental and simulated data.

Quasi-static test of the precast-concrete pile foundation for railway bridge construction

  • Precast concrete elements in accelerated bridge construction (ABC) extends from superstructure to substructure, precast pile foundation has proven a benefit for regions with fragile ecological environment and adverse geological condition. There is still a lack of knowledge of the seismic behavior and performance of the precast pile foundation. In this study, a 1/8 scaled model of precast pile foundation with elevated cap is fabricated for quasi-static test. The failure mechanism and responses of the precast pile-soil interaction system are analyzed. It is shown that damage occurs primarily in precast pile-soil interaction system and the bridge pier keeps elastic state because of its relatively large cross-section designed for railways. The vulnerable part of the precast pile with elevated cap is located at the embedded section, but no plastic hinge forms along the pile depth under cyclic loading. Hysteretic curves show no significant strength degradation but obvious stiffness degradation throughout the loading process. The energy dissipation capacity of the precast pile-soil interaction system is discussed by using index of the equivalent viscous damping ratio. It can be found that the energy dissipation capacity decreases with the increase of loading displacement due to the unyielding pile reinforcements and potential pile uplift. It is expected to promote the use of precast pile foundation in accelerated bridge construction (ABC) of railways designed in seismic regions.

Experimental study on seismic behavior of two-storey modular structure

  • Due to the unique construction method of modular steel buildings (MSBs) with units prefabricated fully off the site and assembled quickly on the site, the inter-module connection for easy operation and overall performance of the system were key issues. However, it was a lack of relevant research on the system-level performance of MSBs. This study investigated the seismic performance of two-storey modular steel structure with a proposed vertical rotary inter-module connection. Three full-scale quasi-static tests, with and without corrugated steel plate and its combination, were carried out to evaluate and compare their seismic behaviour. The hysteretic performance, skeleton curves, ductile performance, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation capacity, and deformation pattern were clarified. The results showed that good ductility and plastic deformation ability of such modular steel structures. Two lateral-force resistance mechanisms with different layout combinations were also discussed in detail. The corrugated steel plate could significantly improve the lateral stiffness and bearing capacity of the modular steel structure. The cooperative working mechanism of modules and inter-module connections was further analyzed. When the lateral stiffness of upper and lower modular structures was close, limited bending moment transfer may be considered for the inter-module connection. While a large lateral stiffness difference existed initially between the upper and lower structures, an obvious gap occurred at the inter-module connection, and this gap may significantly influence the bending moments transferred by the inter-module connections. Meanwhile, several design recommendations of inter-module connections were also given for the application of MSBs.

피스톤 펌프 기법을 이용한 흙-수분 특성곡선 측정방법 (Determination of the Soil-water Characteristic Curve Using the Flow Pump Technique)

  • 흙-수분 특성곡선은 토질역학에서 불포화토의 근간이 되는 중요한 물성함수로 불포화토 연구에 있어서 가장 중요한 요소이다. 따라서 이러한 흙-수분 특성곡선을 보다 정확하고 빠르게 또 편리하게 측정할 수 있는 신뢰성 있는 방법이 불포화토 연구에 있어서 우선적으로 요구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 피스톤 펌프 기법을 이용한 흙-수분 특성곡선 측정방법을 보완, 발전시켰다. 이 방법은 기존의 흙-수분 특성곡선 측정방법들보다 측정하기에 편리하고 빠르며 더욱 정확한 측정이 가능하다. 또한 전체실험 과정을 통하여 완전한 통제가 가능하며 컴퓨터를 이용한 자동화 및 정밀측정이 가능하기 때문에 흙-수분 특성곡선의 상세한 부분까지 연구할 수 있다. 한 점 한 점이 아닌 연속적인 건조곡선이나 습윤곡선의 측정이 가능하고 건조곡선에서의 공기침입값 위치라든지 습윤곡선에서의 공기폐색위치등도 측정 가능하다. 또한 불포화토의 특성중의 하나인 흙-수분 특성곡선의 이방성 측정도 가능하다. 본 연구에서는 실험방법상의 기법을 개발했을 뿐만 아니라 실험결과에 대한 구체적인 해석도 이루어졌다. 실례로 석션조절기법(suction drop measurement)이라는 방법을 개발했으며 이 방법을 이용하면 흙-수분 특성곡선을 보다 편리하고 또 짧은 시간 내 정확하게 측정할 수 있다.

불포화 함수특성의 경로의존성을 고려한 현장사면 수리거동 예측 (Predicted Hydraulic Behavior in In-Situ Soil Slope Using the Path-Dependent Soil Water Characteristic Curve)

  • 불포화상태 지반의 흡수력과 응력변화를 반영한 토사사면의 전체 안정성 평가에서 매우 중요한 상태평가 입력변수로 함수특성곡선이 활용되고 있다. 함수특성의 경로의존성은 일반적으로 건조와 습윤과정으로 이력현상을 내포하는데 현장계측결과는 주로 실내실험의 습윤과정에 가깝게 나타난다. 본 연구에서는 이를 비정상류 해석에 적용하여 해석과 현장 계측된 결과들을 비교 검토하였다. 또한 심도가 증가할수록 강우의 영향이 작고 습윤과정을 적용해 산정된 값에 근접하였다. 따라서 불포화 토사사면 해석 시에 경로의존 함수특성곡선을 적용하여 안정성을 판단하는 것이 보다 합리적인 결과로 판단된다.
