  • In design of steel column member using TMCP steels, hysteretic behavior characteristics of steel column must be clarified. To predict hysteretic behavior of steel column using TMCP steels, a cyclic plasticity model is necessary which can consider the mechanical characteristics and stress-strain relationship of TMCP steels. In this paper, a cyclic plasticity model of SM490-TMC was formulated based on monotonic and cyclic loading tests. The formulated cyclic plasticity model was applied to 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Hysteretic behavior characteristics of steel circular column and H-section column using SM490-TMC was presented by carrying out numerical analysis. Also, influence of SM490-TMC on hysteretic behavior of steel column was presented by comparing analysis results both SM490 and SM490-TMC steel column.

  • In this paper, various dynamic model of magnetorheological (MR) damper, is required for describing the hysteresis of MR damper and for their application are investigated to structural control. The dynamic characteristics and control effects of the modeling methods for MR dampers such as Bingham, biviscous, hysteretic biviscous, simple Bouc-Wen, Bouc-Wen with mass element and phenomenological models are studied. Of these models, hysteretic biviscous model which is simple and describes the hysteretic characteristics, is chosen for numerical studies. The capacity of MR damper is determined as a portion of not the building weight but the lateral restoring force.

  • The design response spectrum has been widely used in seismic design to estimate force and deformation demands of structures imposed by Earthquake Ground Motion (EQGM). Inelastic Design Response Spectra (IDRS) to specify design yielding strength in seismic codes are obtained by reducing the ordinates of Linear Elastic Design Response Spectrum (LEDRS) by strength reduction factor (R). Since a building is designed using reduced design spectrum (IDRS) rather than LEDRS in current seismic design procedures it allows structures behave inelastically during design level EQGM. Inelastic Response Spectra (IRS) depend not only on the characteristics of the expected ground motion at a given site, but also on the dynamic properties and nonlinear characteristics of a structure. However, it has not been explicitly investigated the effect of different hysteretic models on IRS. In this study, the effect of hysteretic models on IRS is investigated.

  • Current seismic design code is based on the assumption that the designed structures would be behaved inelastically during a severe earthquake ground motion. For this reason, seismic design forces calculated by seismic codes are much lower than the forces generated by design earthquakes which makes structures responding elastically. Present procedures for calculating seismic design forces are based on the use of elastic spectra reduced by a strength reduction factors known as "response modificaion factor". The effect of hysteretic behavior, as well as maximum ductility ratio and period on the inelastic strength demand is investigated. Special emphasis is given to the effects of the hysteretic characteristics such as strength degradation or pinching. Results indicate that inelastic strength demands are strongly dependent on level of inelastic deformation, period and hysteretic behavior.

  • Multi-leaf springs are widely used for a major suspension component in many commercial vehicles. The modeling technique of multi-leaf springs is one of the most difficult problems in suspension modeling as the elements have complicated nonlinear characteristics such as a hysteresis behavior due to the friction. In this paper, hysteretic characteristics with the static and dynamic test are modeled and are simulated with three links and joints in MSC.ADAMS. Simulation results showed good agreements with test results. Using this methodology, it is expected that dynamic characteristics of suspension system with multi-leaf spring can be more accurately evaluated in vehicle dynamics.

  • In this paper, the hysteretic characteristics of traditional wooden house frame, which is fabricated by Sagaemachum, under cyclic lateral load are presented. Full scale frame models are used in the tests. The skeleton curves of traditional wooden frame are quite different from those of wooden frames which are fabricated using nails or bracings. The equivalent viscous damping ratios of the frame system are about 27% and 13% for ordinary and high-column frames, respectively. The nonlinear hysteretic characteristics of the frame is modeled by the so called Modified Double Target model.

  • This study performed experimental validation of the hysteretic steel slit damper's basic and dependent characteristics, which should be considered for the design. The basic characteristic of the steel slit damper is used for determining design properties of non-linear analysis, such as yielding strength, yielding displacement, elastic stiffness and post-yielding stiffness. In order to evaluate dependent characteristics of the hysteretic steel slit damper, repeated deformation capacity with respect to the displacement, velocity and aspect ratio of the damper was evaluated. In this study, steel slit damper, which is widely used in Korea, was considered. The slit dampers with 55kN and 240kN of yielding strength were produced and tested. It was concluded that the slit damper's hysteresis behavior was affected by the dependent characteristics: displacement, velocity and aspect ratio. In other words, the steel slit damper's behavior was stable within limit displacement, and aspect ratio of the strut affected repeated deformation capacity of the damper subjected to large deformation. In addition, it was observed that the repeated deformation capacity abruptly decreased at the high speed range (${\geq}60mm/sec$). Furthermore, the experimental results were evaluated with the criterion of the damping device specified in ASCE7-10.

  • In near-fault earthquake prone areas, the velocity pulse-like seismic waves often results in excessive horizontal displacement for structures, which may result in severe structural failure during large or near-fault earthquakes. The recently developed isolator-gap damper (IGD) systems provide a solution for the large horizontal displacement of long period base-isolated structures. However, the hysteresis characteristics of the IGD system are significantly different from the traditional hysteretic behavior. At present, the hysteretic behavior is difficult to be reflected in the structural analysis and performance evaluation especially under random earthquake excitations for lacking of effective analysis models which prevent the application of this kind of IGD system. In this paper, we propose a mathematical hysteretic model for the IGD system that presents its nonlinear hysteretic characteristics. The equivalent linearization is conducted on this nonlinear model, which requires the variances of the IGD responses. The covariance matrix for the responses of the structure and the IGD system is obtained for random earthquake excitations represented by the Kanai-Tajimi spectrum by solving the Lyapunov equation. The responses obtained by the equivalent linearization are verified in comparison with the nonlinear responses by the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) analysis for random earthquake excitations.

  • In general, the laminated rubber bearing (LRB), a composite structure laminated with the elastic rubber and steel plates, has a complex hysteretic nonlinear characteristics in relationships between the restoring force and shear deflection. The representative nonlinear characteristics of LRB include the change of hysteresis loop with cyclic shear deflections and the hardening effects at large shear deflection regions. Changes of the hysteresis loop of LRB with cyclic shear deflections affect the horizontal stiffness and the damping characteristics. The hardening behavior of LRB in large shear deflection region results in an increased horizontal stiffness and therefore, has a great impacton the seismic responses. In this paper, the seismic response analysis is carried out using the modified hysteretic bi-linear model of LRB, which takes into account the hysteresis loop change and the hardening behavior with cyclic shear deflection. The results on seismic responses are compared with those obtained using the widely used hysteretic hi-linear model. The new model is found to reveal the greater amount of peak acceleration response.

  • Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) have been recognized as an effective seismic-force resisting systems due to their excellent strength and stiffness characteristics. The infill steel plate in a SPSW is constrained by a boundary frame consisting of vertical and horizontal structural members. The main purpose of this study was to investigate deformation modes and hysteretic characteristics of steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) to consider the effects of their aspect ratios and width-to-thicness ratios. The finite element model (FEM) was establish in order to simulate cyclic responses of SPSWs which have the two-side clamped boundary condition and made of conventional steel grade. The stress distribution obtained from the FEA results demonstrated that the principal stresses on steel plate with large thickness-to-width ratio were more uniformly distributed along its horizontal cross section due to the formation of multiple struts.
