  • A poled lead zirconate titanate (PZT) rectangular parallelepiped specimen was subjected to through-thickness electric fields at five loading rates and four temperatures. The rates of the electric field were 0.01, 0.10, 0.25, 0.50, and $1.00MVm^{-1}s^{-1}$; the temperatures were 20, 50, 80, and $110^{\circ}C$. From the measured polarization hysteresis responses, the so-called reference remnant polarization and strains were calculated. Using the calculated reference remnant polarization hysteresis loops, the effects of loading rates and temperature were discussed; using the calculated reference remnant strains, strain butterfly loops were calculated and compared with observations.

  • Effects of microstructure of two Mg-ferrite specimens with the same starting composition and relative density but with different grain size on B-H hysteresis loop, natural resonance frequency, and ferromagnetic resonance line width are reported. Such properties as B-H hysteresis loop, saturation magnetization, natural resonance frequency, and ferromagnetic resonance line width were influenced by the microstructure development during sintering. Large grain size specimen showed high saturation magnetization, low coercive force, low natural resonance frequency, and low ferromagnetic resonance line width compared with the specimen of small grain size. The main reason for the changes in properties can be explained by the variation in anisotropic characteristics due to Fe+2 content generated during sintering process.

  • Justeresos loops of melt-spun Nd13Fe77B10 cooled down at remanent state were measured at 4.2 K and 250 K. The hysteresis loops were analysed on the basis of the Stoner-Wohlfarth (S-W) model, the inter-grain exchange coupled single domain (SD) model and micromagnetism. The coercivity higher than that predicted from the S-W model and the striking shift of the thin minor loop along the H-axix observed at the fields of Hmax=4MA/m at 4.2 K indicated new evidences for the inter-grain exchange interaction . The S-W model failed in explaining the high iHc and the shift of the thin minor loop. The exchange coupled SD model was found to explain the experimental results qualitatively without difficulties associated with the S-W model. The micromagnetic calculations using a finite element technique simulated the experimental results fairly well quntitatively.

  • It is advantageous to use NDE methods to assess the mechanical properties of materials since the conventional method is time-consuming and sometimes requires cutting of sample from the component. The NDE parameters such as ultrasonic velocity and attenuation, electric resistivity, and magnetic coercive force and remanance have been utilized to evaluate changes of material properties due to heat treatment condition. It has been found that changes of materials properties under quenched and tempered/PWHT treatments could not be detected using EMAT and Electrical resistivity methods. However, victors hardness and magnetic hysteresis loop decreased with heat treatment procedures. These results were obtained using 3Cr-lMo-0.25V steel. The magnetic parameters were found to be most sensitive to changes of material properties.

  • The rolled steels for welded structure applied tensile stress have been examined by means of magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) method and of a physical parameter obtained from a hysteresis loop. The behaviors of MBN parameters and coercive force with tensile stress were discussed in relation to microstructure changes. There is no change in MBN parameters and coercive force below yield strength. The coercive force rises rapidly with tensile stress above yield strength. On the other hand, the rms voltage and the peak in averaged rms voltage take a maximum around yield strength and then decreases. The magnetomotive force at peak in the averaged rms voltage shows a minimum around yield strength. These phenomena are attributed to the combined effects of cell texture and dislocation density. In addition, the behaviors of MBN parameters around yield strength may be reflected by the localized changes in strain field due to the formation of dislocation tangles.

  • The resilience of the exchange bias ($H_{EX}$) in ferromagnet / antiferromagnet bilayers is generally studied in terms of repeated hysteresis loop cycling or by protracted annealing under reversed field (training and long-term relaxation respectively). The stability of $H_{EX}$ is fundamental for practical application of exchange bias systems. In this paper we report measurements of training and relaxation in FeNi films coupled with the antiferromagnet FeMn. We show that $H_{EX}$ suppressed both by training and relaxation was partially recovered as soon as a field cycling for consecutive hysteresis loop measurement was stopped or the magnetization of the ferromagnet was switched back to the biased direction.

  • In this study, PLZT stock solutions were prepared by Sol-Gel processing after the compositions were selected in the memory region of PLZT bulk phase diagram. PLZT solutions were deposited on the ITO glass substrate by spin-coating method. The thin films were annealed by rapid thermal processing. The electric characteristics, hysteresis loop, C-V characteristics of thin films in the memory region were measured in order to investigate the electrical characteristics of PLZT thin films. In selected compositions the decrease in Zr/Ti ratio led to an increase in dielectric constant and the decrease in remanent polarization and coercieve field which brought about slim hysteresis loop.

  • A new identification algorithm for the Preisach model is presented. The algorithm treats the identification procedure of the Preisach model as an inverse problem where the independent variables are parameters of the distribution function and the objective function is constructed using only the initial magnetization curve or only tile major loop of the hysteresis curve as well as the whole reversal curves. To parameterize the distribution function, the Bezier spline and Gaussian function are used for the coercive and interaction fields axes, respectively. The presented algorithm is applied to the ferrite permanent magnets, and the distribution functions are correctly found from the major loop of the hysteresis curve or the initial magnetization curve.

  • Piezo actuators are mainly used in precision position control system because of their high position resolution. Although there have been many approaches in open loop control of this, those method turn out to be not effective in precision control due to hysteresis and creep. To overcome the problems, closed loop PI control method is used in commercial products. However, it is very difficult to obtain fast response with conventional PI control although piezo actuator has fast response. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy PI control method with the proposed fuzzy PI controller, we obtains faster settling response over the conventional PI controller. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method with experimental results.

  • In this paper, nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted based on the experimental results on buckling restrained brace. The reliability of the analytical model was verified by comparing the results of experimental studies with hysteresis loop, bi-linear curve, cumulative energy dissipation capacity, and equivalent viscous damping. A valid finite element model has been secured and will be used as basic data for finite element analysis of buckling restrained braces in the future.
