ON THE EXTERMINATION OF POLYCLADS -Calcium hypochlorite($CaOCl_2$) treatment in the period of high water temperature- (납작벌레의 구제에 관하여 -고수온기에 있어서의 표백분($CaOCl_2$) 처리-)

  • Polyclads (Stylochus ijimai and Pseudostylochus obscurus) which damage oyster were treated with calcium hypochlorite to determine the TLm concentration. In this experiment the TLm and the extermination density as well as the growth of the oyster after the treatment were checked with following results: The higher the temperature and the longer the period of the treatment is, the lower the TLm is. The greater the concentration of sea water is, the higher TLm is because of the weakened action of calcium hypochlorite. When the oyster is treated by calcium hypochlorite at the oyster farm, its extermination concentration is 2.4-7.1 times higher than that of TLm in fresh water. The growth rate was not affected after the treatment.

  • Sodium hypochlorite, used as water disinfectant, is generated by electrolysis of salt. Compared to chlorine gas disinfection, it is free from high-pressure gas regulation and does not generate toxic gas, so it is increasingly used as a safe disinfectant. Despite these advantages, the concentration of sodium hypochlorite decreases with temperature during long-term storage, and the amount of chlorate increases when a large amount is added, it has mainly been applied to small-scale waterworks. To solve this problem, high sodium hypochlorite generation was developed. In this study, the changes of concentration and chlorate of sodium hypochlorite with time has been studied. As a result of the test, it was found that the usable period of sodium hypochlorite produced at a certain temperature or less was increased from 1.5 days to 13 days. Overall, sodium hypochlorite can be applied even in large-scale waterworks, which makes operation more stable and also reduces the disinfection byproducts, thus it contributed greatly to securing water quality.

The Effect of Oxidizing Agents on Alkaloid Reduction of Tobacco Extract (담배추출물의 알카로이드감소에 미치는 산화제의 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out for the purpose of reducing alkaloid in reconstituted tobacco sheet and effluent of reconstituted tobacco sheet manufacturing company by treating oxidizing agents such as ozone, sodium hypochlorite, perchloric acid and hydrogen peroxide to tobacco extract created from the manufacturing process of reconstituted tobacco sheet. The effect of alkaloid reduction in tobacco extract by the volume added, time of treatment and pH of oxidizing agents were as follows: 1. When the solid rate of tobacco extract stood at 10 percent, the content of alkaloid, total sugar, total nitrogen and chlorine was 1,600mg/l, 11,000mg/l, 3,200mg/l and 4,000mg/l, respectively. 2. The effect of alkaloid reduction through ozone treatment was in proportion to time of ozone treatment. Alkaloid showed a 31.2 percent reduction under 8 hours' ozone treatment and 0.23g ozone consumed to remove lmg alkaloid. 3. Alkaloid reduction through sodium hypochlorite treatment was influenced by quantity of chlorine in sodium hypochlorite solution. To remove lmg alkaloid, 36.3mg chlorine was used. Reduction of alkaloid was not affected by time of sodium hypochlorite treatment, while showed the best reaction under pH 5-7. 4. The effect of alkaloid reduction by perchloric acid was under the control of the volume added and time of treatment of perchloric acid. The volume of perchloric acid required to remove alkaloid was on the decrease as time of treatment was getting longer. lmg alkaloid was removed by 0.15g perchloric acid under 8 hours' perchloric acid treatment. 5. Alkaloid reduction reacted slowly to the volume added and time of treatment of hydrogen peroxide. Under 8 hours' hydrogen peroxide treatment, it showed maximum removal, registering 10 percent alkaloid reduction.

Efficacy of Sodium Hypochlorite against E. coli on Various Leafy Green and Stem Vegetables (차아염소산나트륨이 비가열 엽경채류 중 병원성 대장균 사멸에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of sodium hypochlorite in eliminating Escherichia coli strains from leafy green and stem vegetables, which are frequently sold at community service centers. A cocktail of non-pathogenic E. coli and enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (E. coli O157:H7) was used to artificially contaminate the vegetables (initial numbers of bacteria 7-8 log CFU/g). The contaminated vegetables were soaked in sodium hypochlorite for 5 min and then washed three times with running water. After the treatment, number of viable bacterial cells on the vegetables was estimated. Sodium hypochlorite treatment reduced the E. coli population by 1-2 log CFU/g on leafy green and stem vegetables, a significant reduction from the initial number. Further, sodium hypochlorite showed better antimicrobial efficacy for leaves with a larger surface area, less roughness, and softness. There was no significant difference in the antimicrobial effect between 100 and 200 mg/kg of sodium hypochlorite. Therefore, it is not necessary to increase sodium hypochlorite concentration than the level suggested in the school meal hygiene management guidelines. However, sodium hypochlorite treatment is not sufficient to achieve a safe level of microorganisms on leafy green and stem vegetables since they generally have a high abundance of microorganisms on their surface. Thus, an alternative cooking method for fresh leafy green and stem vegetables in summer should be developed to ensure they are safe for consumption.

  • This study was concerned with the influence of reaction conditions on the surface friction properties of Syrene-Butadiene Rubber(SBR) sheet when it was chlorinated by chemical treatment method using the sodium hypochlorite and sulfuric acid. The results of this study were as follows. SEM photographs of chlorinated SBR surface showed uneven etching caused by the chlorination. In the FTIR spectra, the intensity of C=C peak of SBR was decreased with increasing the concentration of sodium hypochlorite. Otherwise there was no trace of C=C peak in spectrum of SBR treated with 5 wt% NaOCl with pH 0.1 for 90 seconds. EDX spectra showed that relative content of chlorine of SBR was increased with increasing the amount of sodium hypochlorite, and also affected with pH condition of acid solution. Friction angle and friction coefficient of SBR were influenced with concentration of sodium hypochlorite, but were not with pH condition of acid solution.

Enhanced Germination of Echinacea angustifolia Seed with Ethephon and Sodium Hypochlortie Treatment

  • The influence of sodium hypochlorite and ethephon on the germination of narrow-leaved purple coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia) was investigated. Treatment of seeds with ethephon (1 mM) for 2 h followed by soaking in 0.525% sodium hypochlorite greatly increased germination (>90%). The treatment of seed with a combination of sodium hypochlorite and ethephon shortened number of days required to reach 50% of the final germination ($T_{50}$) from 4.2 days in control to 1.1 days. Seedlings grown from ethephon-treated seeds had shorter and thicker hypocotyls and roots with higher dry weights compared to the control. The same trend was observed during seedling emergence from soil. Ethephon treatment longer than 2 h resulted in weaker seedlings, probably due to leaf senescence. Anthocyanin content in seedling leaves increased linearly from 0.04 mg/g fresh weight in control to 3.72 mg/g fresh weight in 24 h treatment as the time of seed exposure to ethephon increased. Seed treatment with bleach and ethephon may well be practiced to facilitate the establishment of E. angustifolia in the field.

Effects of hypochlorite exposure on morphology and trace organic contaminant rejection by NF/RO membranes

  • The impacts of membrane degradation due to chlorine attack on the rejection of inorganic salts and trace organic contaminants by nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were investigated in this study. The rejection of trace contaminants was examined at environmentally relevant concentrations. Changes in the membrane surface morphology were observed as a result of chlorine exposure. A small increase in rejection was consistently observed with all four membranes selected in this study after being exposed to a low concentration of hypochlorite (100 ppm). In contrast, a higher concentration of hypochlorite (i.e., 2000 ppm) could be detrimental to the membrane separation capacity. Membranes with severe chlorine impact showed a considerable decrease in rejection over filtration time, possibly due to rearrangement of the polyamide chains under the influence of chlorine degradation and filtration pressure. The reported results indicate that loose NF membranes are more sensitive to chlorine exposure than RO membranes. The impact of hypochlorite exposure (both positive and negative) on rejection is dependent on the strength of the hypochlorite solution and is more significant for the neutral carbamazepine compound than the negatively charged sulfamethoxazole.

  • During the germination of soybean (variety Peongyang: Glycine max L.) which was treated by hypochlorite and standard procedure. fructose content was highest and followed by glucose and galactose. Fructose. glucose and galactose decreased as germination period was longer. in the standard procedure. When hypochlorite was treated the fructose content was highest but galactose was almost negligible. and as the period of treatment was longer. fructose content decreased. The sucrose content increased until 96 hours and decreased thereafter. Over the whole period. the germinated soybean treated by hypochlorite showed higher sugar content than standard procedure. Raffinose decreased and disappeared after 96 hours in the standard procedure. and it didn't show up after 48 hours when treated by hypochlorite. Stachyose decreased in both case.

The Effect of Chemical Sanitizers on Reducing Staphylococcus aureus on Rubber Gloves Depending on Material and Food Contaminant (고무장갑 재질 및 식품 오염에 따른 살균소독제의 황색포도상구균 저해 효과)

  • This study investigated the effect of sodium hypochlorite and ethanol on reducing Staphylococcus aureus on gloves depending on material and food contaminant. S. aureus inoculated onto rubber gloves with various organic substances (pork extract, perilla leaf extract, and 0.2% peptone water) and inoculated rubber gloves were stored in a desiccator at 100% RH and 25℃ for 24 h before treatments with distilled water, ethanol, or sodium hypochlorite. Levels of S. aureus were significantly reduced on both types of rubber gloves when treated with ethanol and sodium hypochlorite. However, sodium hypochlorite treatment resulted in 3.27 log CFU/each of S. aureus in pork extract on nitrile gloves, indicating that the effectiveness of disinfection may vary depending on the glove material and the type of organic substance. The results of this study suggest that ethanol treatment is the most effective disinfection method for S. aureus on rubber gloves, regardless of the material and organic substances.

Fouling resistant membrane tailored by polyethylene glycol in oxidative environment for desalination

  • Surface modification is very efficient and scalable approach to achieve improved membrane performance. We treated Reverse Osmosis Thin Film Composite (TFC RO) membrane with various concentrations of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), a hydrophilic polymer after activation with sodium hypochlorite. This treatment resulted in an increment of the water flux by 43% and the salt rejection by 2.36% for the 3000 mg/l PEG-treated membrane. Further, these PEG-treated membranes were exposed to a mixture of 3000 mg/l PEG and 1000 mg/l sodium hypochlorite for 1 hour. Further modification of this membrane by PEG and sodium hypochlorite mixture increased the water permeance up to 133% when compared with the virgin TFC RO membrane. We characterized the treated membranes to understand the changes in wettability by contact angle analysis, changes in surface morphology and roughness by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis.
