For application of sodium hypochlorite as a seed disinfectant to the control of bakanae disease caused by Gibberella fujikuroi in rice, we investigated the effects of sodium hypochlorite for antifungal activity, eliminating fungus from seeds and reducing disease occurrence in vitro and greenhouse. The viability of the pathogen was significantly reduced at $80{\mu}l/l$ concentration of sodium hypochlorite, and the pathogens did not grow at over $100{\mu}l/l$ concentration of sodium hypochlorite. The effect of eliminating fungus was 90% at treatment of 0.3% sodium hypochlorite solution to infected rice seeds for eight hours. When the rice seeds were soaked into 0.5% and 0.3% sodium hypochlorite solutions for twelve hours, the disease incidences of rice seedling were remarkably reduced to 4.3% and 4.7%, respectively, compared to 97.3% of non-treatment control. The rates of seedling stand were 29.1% and 26.9% higher with the sodium hypochlorite treatment than that of non-treatment control. When prochloraz and sodium hypochlorite was treated to naturally severely infested rice seeds with bakanae disease, the disinfection effect was higher than that of prochloraz alone treatment. When the seeds were soaked in sodium hypochlorite before or after prochloraz, the rate of seed contamination was low as 4.0% or 6.3%, respectively, compared to prochloraz alone as 13.7%. The disease incidence was low as 3.7% or 8.3%, respectively, compared to prochloraz alone as 14.3%. The disinfection effect of treatment with prochloraz after sodium hypochlorite was higher than that of treatment with prochloraz before sodium hypochlorite.
The removal efficiency of herbicide glyphosate in a drinking water treatment system was investigated. Four major processes of a drinking water treatment system were selected and experiments were performed separately including; treatments by sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), a sedimentation process by PAC (polyaluminum chloride), ozonation and a GAC (granular activated carbon) treatment. In the sodium hypochlorite experiment, about 50% of the glyphosate was removed by 2 mg/L of hypochlorite and more than 90% was eliminated when 5 mg/L of NaOCl was applied. Also, AMPA, the main metabolite of glyphosate, was treated with hypochlorite. More than 30% of the AMPA was removed by 2 mg/L of hypochlorite and 50% by 5 mg/L. In the PAC experiment, it was determined that more than 60% could be removed. Further experiments were performed and the results indicated that the removed amount was dependent upon the amount of soil and upon the properties of the soil especially that of clay minerals. Ozonation could oxidize glyphosate to its byproducts at about a level of 50%. In contrast, when 1 mg/L of glyphosate was treated with GAC, the amount removed was negligible. The results of this experiment were conclusive. We confirmed that drinking water, which has been contaminated with water polluted with glyphosate can be effectively purified by the application of the drinking water treatment processes currently used.
Sodium hypochlorite alkaline was tested against Pseudomonas tolaasii causing bacterial blotch on cultivated oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus). The minimum inhibitory concentration of sodium hypochlorite against P. tolaasii contained active chlorine (AC) at 1.4 mg/l on plate assay. The highest cultivation yield was obtained from the treatment of AC 5.7 mg/l. Treatment of sodium hypochlorite at the rate of higher than AC 11.4 mg/l resulted in reduced yields at the harvest. However, the population of total bacteria on the bed surface treated with AC 5.7 mg/l of sodium hypochlorite was maintained to some extent. Inhibitory concentration against total bacteria on the bed surface was over AC 22.8 mg/l. Mushroom mycelium was damaged and its growth strongly inhibited at the concentration of AC 200 mg/l. Mushroom caps showed yellowish symptom by chemical injury by treatments of AC 74.1 mg/l or higher. Sporocarps infected by P. tolaasii were irrevocable at any concentration of sodium hypochlorite. Routine watering with AC 5.7 mg/l from mushroom initiation to the end of picking resulted in reduced bacterial blotch incidence of 40% and 86% at two mushroom farms. The treatment resulted in higher quality mushroom production compared to that conventionally watered with tap water alone.
The pH-dependent inter-conversion of the three free chlorine species ($Cl_2$, HOCl, OCl-) present in the aqueous hypochlorite solution was theoretically investigated. Each species was found overwhelmingly present in a characteristic pH range. Hypochlorite treatment of the polyamide membrane was carried out over these pH ranges and various membrane responses were observed. As pH is less than 8, membrane tends to be N-chlorinated by $Cl_2$ and HOCl, and N-chlorinated membrane showed reduced water permeance and salt rejection. As pH rises to 10-12, $OCl^-$ appears to be the dominating chlorine species. Membrane hydrolysis was found to well interpret the improved water permeance and salt rejection. When the pH is between 8-10, both N-chlorination and hydrolysis contribute to the response of the membrane, and the treated membrane showed improved salt rejection but reduced water permeation. Excessive hydrolysis occurred while the membrane was treated at pH 13 for the much stronger alkalinity.

Although sodium hypochlorite is the most frequently used canal irrigant during endodontic treatment, its complications are not as well recognized as its effectiveness. This report demonstrates that sodium hypochlorite extrusion during endodontic treatment can cause severe complications. A 5-year-old boy experienced immediate pain and swelling, ecchymosis in surrounding tissues, and profuse bleeding from the root canal during endodontic treatment, because of accidental extrusion of sodium hypochlorite. The patient was hospitalized, and analgesics and antibiotics were prescribed. Accidental extrusion of the irrigating solution occurs more frequently in teeth with immature apices, root resorption, and apical perforations; therefore, caution is needed. When such complications occur, proper management and medications are needed.

Purpose: Since the food wastewater contains a high concentration of nitrogen, it is very important to find a way to efficiently remove it. Research design, data and methodology: A total of four experiments were conducted under different conditions to remove ammonia nitrogen present in the food wastewater. The experiment was designed by adding sodium hypochlorite to the raw food wastewater and varying conditions such as pH control, aeration/precipitation, and stirring. Results: The ammonia nitrogen removal rate in Experiment 1 was about 12% (sodium hypochlorite added), ammonia nitrogen increased about 4.7% in Experiment 2 (sodium hypochlorite added after aeration/precipitation in a bioreaction tank, stirring), and decreased about 52.5% (sodium hypochlorite added after controlling and stirring). Conclusions: When the concentration of sodium hypochlorite was high, ammonia nitrogen was best removed, and the pH was adjusted to 12, and sodium hypochlorite was added after stirring, and the removal was the second best. If the method of this study is further studied and developed, it can be basic data for ammonia nitrogen removal in the future.
In this study, the influence of different IEMs (ion exchange membranes) to performance of the hypochlorite electrolysis unit with Cl2 recovery stream was investigated. More specifically, Nafion 117-a representative cation exchange membrane (CEM)-and aminated polypheylene oxide (APPO)-an anion exchange membrane (AEM)-were installed in the hypochlorite electrolysis unit, and the performance and the energy efficiency of the units were evaluated and compared. Regardless of whether CEM (Nafion 117) or AEM (APPO) was installed, the rate of hypochlorite generation was increased (by up to 24.3% and 22.2% for Nafion 117 and APPO, respectively) compared with the unit without an IEM. On the other hand, the power efficiency and the optimum operation condition of hypochlorite production units seem to depend on the conductivity and stability of the installed IEM. As the result, between Nafion 117 and APPO, higher performance and efficiency were achieved with Nafion 117, due to excellent conductivity and stability of the membrane.
The effects of light source, plant growth regulators (GA, BA, ABA), and sodium hypochlorite (4% Cl, SH) on germination of 'G rand Rapid' lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seed were studied. Seed did not germinate under the conditions of dark and blue light. The treatment of GA or BA did not promote on germination under dark or blue light. The germination percentage under red light was very high, it was similar to the condition of white light. ABA inhibited lettuce seed germination. Although ABA was treated, BA 10ppm treatment was moderately effective under white light condition and BA 10ppm or 50ppm combined with GA 50ppm were also effective on seed germination under dark condition. Presoaking in sodium hypochlorite solution induced germination of lettuce seed in any condition of dark or white light. The optimum presoaking time in sodium hypochlorite solution was twenty min.
The ability of chemicals, 10% sodium hypochlorite, 28% ammonium hydroxide, 5% sodium hydroxide, 5% sodium bicarbonate, 0.1% hydrochloric acid, 5% hydrogen peroxide, and 5% acetone, to destroy aflatoxins in laboratory waste water containing 3.26 ppb of B$_{1}$ 7.64 ppb of B$_{6}$3 ppb of G$_{1}$, and 11.39 ppb of G$_{2}$ with the total of 29.11 ppb was investigated. High performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) was used for the separation and quantitation of aflatoxins. Treatment for 2 hours by the chemicals affected the destruction of aflatoxins and the most effective chemical was 10% sodium hypochlorite (p<0.05). Sodium hypochlorite concentrations more than 1% significantly reduced aflatoxin B$_{2}$, G$_{1}$, G$_{2}$ and total aflatoxins and more than 3% reduced B$_{1}$ (p<0.05). No further significant decreases were observed above the concentration of 5% for all 4 aflatoxins. Complete destruction of aflatoxins B$_{2}$, G_{1}$, and G$_{2}$ was achieved by 5% sodium hypochlorite at 48 hours and B$_{1}$ at 72 hours.

Dissolving pulp is a low yield(30∼35%) bleached chemical pulp that has a high cellulose content (95% or higher) suitable for use in cellulose derivatives such as rayon, cellulose acetate. This research was studied for dissolving pulp preparation as the raw material of viscose rayon from commertial pulps. (TMP, CP, DIP) In the change of pulp(cellulose) characteristics after sodium hypochlorite and solvolysis treatment. the following results were obtained In the case of sodium hypochlorite pretreatment, we have obtained pulp that high purity cellulose, but degree of polymerization was inclined to decrease less than 170∼240. Comparing sodium hypochlorite pretreatment and solvolysis pretreatment, solvolysis pretreatment is superior to sodium hypochlorite process for making dissolving pulp. We think that the low degree of polymerization of cellulose because of increasing degradation of cellulose during delignification treatment.
