Basauxia and Ashtaangam of Hyphorrycetes from Southeast Asia.

  • Two interesting new hyphomycetes collected on rachis of an unidentified palm (Palmao) from Malayasia are described and their taxonomy is discussed in this paper. One of them is unique in producing basauxic conidiophores from conidiophore mother cells that are sessile, simple, cylindrical or cupulate, and solitary, gangliar, acrogenous, dry phragmoconidia. It is classified in a new genus Basauxia, as a new species, B. pulchra. The other hyphomycete is also unique in producing characteristic solitary, eight-celled, eight-armed gangliar conidia on simple conidiophores. A new genus, Ashtaangam is proposed for it in which it is placed as a new species, A. sundaram.

A Polyphialidic Hyphomycete Gonytrichum macrocladum New to Korea from the Arable Soil in Jinju-shi

  • During the study of soil mycoflora in Jinju-shi in 1997, a dematiaceous hyphomycete, Gonytrichum macrocladum, was isolated using the soil dilute plating method. The isolate was recovered with very low frequencies and recorded for the first time in Korea. illustrated descriptions are presented for the isolate examined in the present study.

Phialocephala lagerbergii: A New Record from Crop Field Soil in Korea

  • A unrecorded hyphomycete species of Phialocephala was isolated for the first time during the investigation of fungal community in the soil samples collected from different regions of Korea. The fungal isolate was identified as Phialocephala lagerbergii, based on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the ribosomal DNA sequence. In addition, cultural and micro-morphological features were described in detail.

Bipolaris marantae sp. nov., A Novel Helminthosporoid Species Causing Foliage Blight of the Garden Plant Maranta leuconeura in Brazil

  • A severe leaf spot, turning to foliage blight, was observed on leaves of Maranta leuconeura growing in a garden in Brazil (state of Rio de Janeiro) in 2015. A dematiaceous hyphomycete bearing a morphology typical of a helminthosporoid fungi was regularly found in association with diseased tissues. The fungus was isolated and pathogenicity was demonstrated through the completion of Koch's postulates. A morphology and molecular analysis led to the conclusion that the fungus belonged to the genus Bipolaris, which is characterized by having fusiform conidia, externally thickened and truncate hila and a bipolar pattern of germination. Additionally, homology of internal transcribed spacer and GAPDH sequences with sequences of other Bipolaris species, confirmed its generic placement. A phylogenetic study also indicated clearly that the fungus on M. leuconeura is phylogenetically distinct from related species of this genus, leading to the proposal of the new species Bipolaris marantae.

Evaluation of a Fungal Strain, Myrothecium roridum F0252, as a Bioherbicide Agent

  • In the course of in vitro and in vivo screening for bioherbicidal agents, a hyphomycete fungus, Myrothecium sp. F0252 was selected as a candidate for the biocontrol of weeds. The isolate was identified as Myrothecium roridum Tode ex. Fries based on the morphological characteristics and 18S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis and registered as Myrothecium roridum F0252. In order to evaluate the in vitro effect of M. roridum F0252 on germination of ladino clover and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) seeds, spore solution of the fungus was employed in two concentrations, $6.5{\times}10^6$ and $2.5{\times}10^7$ spores per mL and then inoculated to the seeds. The fungal spores inhibited the seed germination, infected the seedlings, and caused an abnormal withering and inhibition of seedling growth. In addition, when the herbicidal activity of crude ethyl acetate extract from the liquid culture was assessed on a mini-plant, duck-weed (Lemna paucicostata (L.) Hegelm.), the extract showed high inhibitory effect at the level of $12.5{\mu}g$ per mL. On the other hand, in vivo herbicidal activity of M. roridum F0252 was evaluated by a whole plant spray method. M. roridum F0252 exhibited strong and broad-spectrum herbicidal activity. The herbicidal values ranged from 95-100% against 7 weeds, including Abutilon avicennae and Xanthium strumarium, and 70-80% against Digitaria sanguinalis and Sagittaria pygmaea. When the nutritional utilization (95 carbon sources) pattern of M. roridum F0252 was investigated, it varied with water activity ($a_w$) and temperature conditions, supplying good, basic information in regard to nutritional utilization for proper cultivation and formulation. Our results showed that M. roridum F0252 might be used as a potential biocontrol agent against weedy plants.

A Technique for the Prevention of Greenhouse Whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) Using the Entomopathogenic Fungus Beauveria bassiana M130

  • The possibility of using hyphomycete fungi as suitable biocontrol agents against greenhouse whitefly has led to the isolation of various insect pathogenic fungi. Among them is Beauveria bassiana, one of the most studied entomopathogenic fungi. The objective of this study was to use B. bassiana M130 as an insecticidal agent against the greenhouse whitefly. M130 isolated from infected insects is known to be a biocontrol agent against greenhouse whitefly. Phylogenetic classification of M130 was determined according to its morphological features and 18S rRNA sequence analysis. M130 was identified as B. bassiana M130 and showed chitinase (342.28 units/ml) and protease (461.70 units/ml) activities, which were involved in the invasion of the host through the outer cuticle layer, thus killing them. The insecticidal activity was 55.2% in petri-dish test, 84.6% in pot test, and 45.3% in field test. The results of this study indicate that B. bassiana has potential as a biological agent for the control of greenhouse whitefly to replace chemical pesticides.
