  • The NMR shift arising from the electron angular momentum and the electron spin dipolar-nuclear spin angular momentum interaction has been examined for a $3d_1$ system in a strong octahedral crystal field when the threefold axis is chosen as the quantization axis. To investigate the NMR shift in this situation, first, we have extended the evaluation of the hyperfine integrals to any pairs of 3d orbitals adopting a general method which is applicable to a general vector R, pointing in arbitrary direction in space. Secondly, a general expression using a nonmultipole technique is derived for the NMR shift resulting from the electron angular momentum and the electron spin dipolar-nuclear spin angular momentum interactions. From this expression all the multipolar terms are determined. ${\Delta}B/B$ for the $3d_1$ system in this case is compared with that for the 3d1 system when the z axis is chosen as the quantization axis. When we choose the threefold axis as the quantization axis, it is found that along the , and axes, ${\Delta}B/B$ values are significantly different from each other and along the , <-1-1-1>, <-11-1>, , <-1-11>, , and <-111> axes, ${\Delta}B/B$ values are however the same. We also find that the 1/R7 term contributes dominantly to the NMR shift for all values of R. When 1/$R^5$ term is included, there is good agreement between the exact solution and the multipolar terms when $R\; {\leqslant}\;0.35\;nm.$.

  • The mixed ferrite $V_xFe_{3-x}O_4$(x=0.0, 0.15, 0.5, 1.0) thin films were prepared by sol-gel method. Their crystallographic and magnetic hyperfine properties have been studied using X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and conversion electron $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy(CEMS). The crystal structure is found to be cubic spinel throughout the series($x{\leq}1.0$), and the lattice parameter $a_0$ increases linearly with increasing V content. XRD, XSP and CEMS indicate that $V^{3+}$ substitution for $Fe^{3+}$ in B-site is superior to $V^{2+}$ substitution for $Fe^{2+}$ in B-site. It is noticeable that both quadrupole shift and hyperfine field decreases with increasing V composition, suggesting the change of local symmetry and accompanying line-broadening. The line-broadening on CEMS spectra can be explained by the distribution of magnetic hyperfine fields.

  • [ $^{11}B$ ] nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements were performed on the single crystals of $TbB_4$ to investigate local electronic structure and 4f spin dynamics. $^{11}B$ NMR spectrum, Knight shift, spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates were measured down to 4K at 8T. $^{11}B$ NMR shift and linewidth are huge and strongly temperature dependent due to the 4f moments. In addition, both are proportional to magnetic susceptibility, indicating that the hyperfine field at the boron site originates from the 4f spins of Tb. Below $T_N$, the single broad resonance peak of $^{11}B$ NMR splits into several peaks reflecting the local magnetic fields due to antiferromagnetic spin arrangements. The longitudinal and the transverse relaxation rates, $1/T_1\;and\;1/T_2$, independent of temperature above $T_N$, decreases tremendously confirming huge suppression of spin fluctuation below $T_N$.

  • Ferrimagnetic Copper-Iron-Chromium Oxide $CuFe_{0.9}Cr_{1.1}O_4$ has been investigated over a temperature range from liquid nitrogen temperature upto $N{\acute{e}}el$ temperature using the Mossbauer technique. Its $N{\acute{e}}el$ temperature is found to be 355 K. Above the $N{\acute{e}}el$ temperature the quadrupole splitting is found to be 0.50 mm/s. On the other hand, all the electric quadrupole shift values are zero below the $N{\acute{e}}el$ temperature within experimental error. These seemingly contradictory phenomena have been explained by the model that the magnetic hyperfine field is randomly oriented with respect to the principal axes of the electric-field-gradient tensor.

The Mossbauer Spectra Changes Due to the Jahn-Teller Distortion in Sulphur Spinel $Co_{0.95}Fe_{0.05}Cr_2S_4$ (유화 Spinel $Co_{0.95}Fe_{0.05}Cr_2S_4$에서 Jahn - Teller Distortion에 의한 Mossbauer 공명 흡수선의 변화에 관한 연구)

  • Sulphur Spinel $Co_{0.95}Fe_{0.05}Cr_2S_4$ has been studied with Mossbauer Spectroscopy between 4.2 K and room temperature. The $Fe^{2+}$ ion in a tetrahedral site is the Jahn-Teller active and the dynamic Jahn-Teller distortion starts below the magnetic ordering temperature. The distortion cause a quadrupole shift to appear which increases with decreasing temperature. The magnetic hyperfine field has a maximum at 100 k and then decreases with decreasing temperature. The magnitude of the interaction ratio R between the electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole interaction increases from 0 near the magnetic ordering temperature to 5.4 at 4.2 K. The optimum values of 0, the polar angle of the magnetic hyperfine field with respect to the principle axis of the electric field gradient (EFG) remains zero and the asymmetry of the EFG n is about 0.25. The simulations of Mossbauer spectra coincidence with the experimental results.

  • The NMR spin echo in pure iron was measured as a function of external magnetic field up to 10 kgauss at room temperature. We observed the signal coming from a single domain formed over 7.5 kgauss which has not been detected in previous works. The resonance frequency shift with external field confirmed that the hyperfine field in iron is -330.2 kgauss. From the comparison of the magnetization curve with the domain wall signal and the resonance frequency in external field, we showed that NMR could give the useful qualitative information on the magnetization process. The extent of the internal strain removed by annealing, which can be hardly seen in hysteresis curves, was clearly shown up in the NMR line-width.

  • The embrittlement of fast neutron-irradiated reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels was investigated by X-ray diffraction patterns at room temperature and $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy at room- and liquid nitrogen-temperature. Neutron fluence on the samples were $10^{12},\;10^{13},\;10^{14},\;10^{15},\;10^{16},\;10^{17},\;10^{18}\;n/cm^2$. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the structure of the neutron unirradiated sample was bcc type, where as but the neutron irradiated samples with the fluence higher than $10^{17}\;n/{\cal}cm^2$ were so severely damaged, that bcc type structure disappeared. The $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectra of all samples showed superposition of two or more sextets. In this paper all $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectra were fitted by three set of sextet. The isomer shift and quadrupole splitting values were found around zero. At liquid nitrogen temperature, magnetic hyperfine field and absorption area increase rapidly S 1 sextet in the samples of $10^{17}\~10^{18}\;n/{\cal}cm^2$ neutron fluences. And at room temperature, magnetic hyperfine field and absorption increased rapidly at SI sextet in the samples of $10^{17}\~10^{18}\;n/{\cal}cm^2$ neutron fluences. This rapid increase of magnetic hyperfine field and absorption area were inferred to be caused by the change of $^{56}Fe,\;^{55}Mn$ into $^{57}Fe$ due to by neutron irradiation.

  • The reverse detection heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence, HMQC study of metcyano complex of horse myoglobin(MbCN) has provided the complete assignment of hyperfine shifted resonances of heme carbons attached with proton(s). The application of HMQC experiment to the paramagnetic low-spin MbCN gives clear $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ coherences for the paramagnetic amino acid residues as well as heme side chains, and can be extended to the low-spin paramagnetic hemoprotein derivative for the assignment of natural abundance $^{13}C$ resonances. This assignment strategy can avoid possible ambiguities that may result from the sole utilization of $^1H$ nuclear Overhauser effect for the assignment of heme $^1H$ signals resonating in the diamagnetic region. The resulting 2,4-vinyl ${\alpha}$-carbons and 7-propionate ${\beta}$-carbon follow anomalous anti-Curie behavior, and are indicative of incoplanarity with heme plane. Magnetic/electronic asymmetry of heme induced by proximal histidine(His) makes spread that the hyperfine shifted heme carbon resonances over the range of 250 ppm at $25^{\circ}C$. These heme carbon resonances would be the much more sensitive probe than those of proton resonances in analyzing the nature of heme electronic structure of myoglobin.

  • The properties of Fe-Se-Te system(FeSe(sub)1-xTe(sub)x, x=0.2, 0.5, 0.8) have been studied by means of the X-ray diffraction method and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The results of X-ray diffraction patterns show that three samples have the ixed structure of tetragonal PbO and a small amount of hexagonal NiAs structure respectively. For x=0.5 the lattice parameters of tetragonal PbO structure are a=3.795$\AA$, c=5.896$\AA$ and c/a=1.55. The Mossbauer spectra were obtained with the various temperature variation and than they do not exhibit magnetic hyperfine structure but show a strong doublet. The values of observed isomer shift and quadrupole splitting suggest that the irons of all samples exist in the +2 oxidation state with a major covalent contribution. The temperature dependence of isomer shift values for x=0.8 seems to be originated from the second order Doppler effect.

  • The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline ${(Fe_{2}O_{3})}_{1-x-y}{(In_{2}O_{3})}_{x}{(Eu_{2}O_{3})}_{y}$(x=0.01, y=0.02과 x=0.02, y=0.03) have been studied by the methods of X-ray diffraction, $M\"{o}ssbauer$ effect, and magnetic hysteresis measurement. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the samples have a same crystal structure as $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$. From the analysis of the temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting and average half-width, it is found that the Morin transition occurs in the sample of x=0.01 and y=0.02 and the spin angle defined as the angle between the [111] crystal axis and antiferromagnetic vector, changes from about $35^{\circ}$ to the (111) plane as increasing the temperature in the sample of x=0.02 and y=O.03. The temperature dependence of magnetic hyperfine field is analyzed by using the spin-wave theory. The isomer shift values at room temperature are found to be given by about 0.35mm/s for the samples which means that the Fe ions belong to $3^{+}ion$. The temperature dependence of isomer shift was analyzed by using the Debye model.
