Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the curriculum, educational facilities and employment guidance of the departments dental hygiene in junior colleges in different regions and the satisfaction level of students with their major in an effort to provide some information on the improvement of educational environments and satisfaction level with the major. Methods : The subjects in this study were 315 dental hygiene students in several junior colleges located in Seoul, Gangwon Province and South Jeolla Province. A survey was conducted during a 15-day period from April 15 to March 1, 2010. Results : As for educational environments and satisfaction level with the major, they gave 3.18, 2.95 and 3.11 respectively to satisfaction level with curriculum, facilities/employment guidance and the major. In terms of satisfaction with educational environments by academic year, the juniors and seniors expressed much satisfaction with the qualifications of professors, the preparation of labs and practice devices, the utilization of labs and practice devices and a supply of employment information. By region, the students from the metropolitan area were satisfied a lot with curriculum, the qualifications of professors, practice-centered curriculum, the preparation of labs and practice devices, the utilization of labs and practice devices, the system of employment guidance and a supply of employment information. By credit, the students tho got A expressed lots of satisfaction with the quality of instruction. Concerning satisfaction level with their major by academic year, the juniors and seniors were highly satisfied with relationship with dental hygiene professors and social status of dental hygienists. By school location, the students from the metropolitan area expressed a lot of satisfaction with the content of major courses and social status of dental hygienists. Conclusions : In order to boost the satisfaction level of students in non-metropolitan areas, colleges should try to improve educational environments, and full-fledged assistance should be provided to them.
The purpose of this study was to develop a motivational interviewing (MI) training program to improve competency in communication and to effect the evaluated changes that would occur in dental students' counseling techniques as result of the training in the program. The study proceeded through the program via role-play practice, which was explained effectively during the MI program training process. A convenience sample of 43 fourth-year dental hygiene students was recruited. Twenty-two students were randomly assigned to the intervention group and 21 to the control group in the order of recruitment. The theoretical lecture was delivered over 3 hours and the practice was done in parallel by applying cases occurring in clinic settings. The practice was technical training, partner practice, and small group practice. The intervention group received three hour MI lecture while the control group received no lecture. Evaluation through role-play practice was separated according to "researcher's viewpoint," "counselor's role viewpoint," and "patient's role viewpoint." The results of the analysis showed that the intervention group had higher MI skills and ability than the control group. Furthermore, program participants showed positive impressions to the MI training program. The use of coaching sessions improved the MI techniques and counseling skills of dental hygiene students learning MI. The effect of the application of the MI training program was that the MI training improved counseling skills and interviewing abilities. Moreover, continuous training and feedback enhanced MI techniques and core skills. Training using lectures in parallel with practice rather than education through theory alone improved students' techniques. Application of role play through the combined method of the MI program was confirmed by an effective training method.
본 연구는 치위생과 학생과 일반 대학생들과의 비교분석을 통해 구강보건교육의 중요성을 알아봄으로써, 현재 구강보건관리를 책임지고 있는 인력들에게 시사점을 제공하고자 연구되어 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 대학생들이 인지, 자각하고 있는 구강건강 특성을 살펴본 결과, 구강건강에 대한 관심(p<0.001), 구강건강의 중요도(p<0.01), 현재 학생들이 지각하는 구강건강 상태(p<0.01) 등의 모든 요인에서 치위생과 학생이 일반 학생들 보다 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 구강보건인식 수준은 치위생과 학생이 $4.41{\pm}0.62$점으로 일반 학생 $3.81{\pm}0.70$점보다 유의하게 높게 나타났으며(p<0.001), 구강보건실천 수준 역시 치위생과 학생이 $3.80{\pm}0.61$점으로 일반 학생 $3.33{\pm}0.57$점보다 유의하게 높게 나타났다(p<0.001). 이상의 결과에서 구강보건교육을 받은 경험이 있는 경우 구강보건인식과 실천 수준이 높고, 구강보건인식 수준이 증가할수록 구강보건실천 수준이 높아지는 것으로 나타나 대학생 시기에 적절한 구강보건교육이 실시되어야 할 것으로 생각된다.
Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the relation between factors related to the clinical performance competency of dental hygiene students and their clinical learning environment. Methods: The study conducted a survey of dental hygiene students from October 18 to 30, 2023. The data were analyzed using one way analysis of variance, t-test, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The total practicum lasted ≤10 weeks, 11-15 weeks, and ≥16 weeks for 41.7%, 33.5%, and 24.8% of the students, respectively. Half of them had experience at only one clinical institution. Clinical learning environment had an average score of 3.46 points, whereas the average clinical performance competency of the participants was 3.60 points. The major influencing factors on clinical performance competency were identified as preceptor' s guidance (β=0.277), work participation opportunities (β=0.213), and perceived importance of clinical practice (β=0.136). Conclusions: Efforts are required to provide students with prior education on the importance of clinical practice, improve the clinical learning environment with a focus on preceptor's guidance and work participation opportunities. And standardize various elements to resolve differences in the practice of clinical institutions across regions.
The purpose of this study was to examine food hygiene knowledge and health practice levels of elementary school students at foodservice in the Suwon area. Of the 500 upper graders from three elementary schools, 486 students (97.2%) participated in the study. The questionnaire was composed of general characteristics including experience of serving food at school, food hygiene knowledge (25 questions), and health practice (18 questions). The results were as follows: The education experiences of food hygiene were below 40% though most students (88.1%) participated in providing food at foodservice. The percentage of correct answers in food hygiene knowledge was over 70% in most questions, but relatively lower in food preservation temperature (44.7%) and food poisoning bacteria (43.2%). When we examined food hygiene behavior of elementary school students in 5scales, the level of personal hygiene management was 4.04, sanitary management in food product was 3.62, environmental hygiene was 3.92, and foodborn disease and food microorganism was 3.81. Each level in each subarea was significantly related in the frequency of hygiene education experiences. Finally, the food hygiene knowledge was positively correlated with its behavior level in elementary school foodservice. These results suggested that the knowledge of food hygiene may affect its behavior, and therefore, regular education of food hygiene at home and school would be needed to improve food safety in foodservice.
PURPOSE: This study sought to investigate the change in the satisfaction levels of healthcare students regarding clinical practice before and after the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) outbreak. METHODS: This was a longitudinal survey using a structured questionnaire. The first survey was conducted before the COVID-19 outbreak in April 2018, and the second survey was conducted after the outbreak from May to June 2022. The questionnaire used before and after COVID-19 had the same content and was categorized into the following six factors to determine clinical practice satisfaction: practice guidance, practice environment, practice time, practice evaluation, interpersonal relationships, and effectiveness of practice. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, a total of 153 healthcare students (average age: 22.43 ± 1.47 years old), participated from 4 departments: nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and dental hygiene. After COVID-19, 84 students (average age: 22.75 ± 2.87 years old), from the physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, and dental hygiene departments participated in the survey. RESULTS: Clinical practice satisfaction was evaluated considering the factors of practical guidance, practice environment, practice time, interpersonal relationships, and practical effects. It was observed that the satisfaction with clinical practice increased in nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and dental hygiene students after COVID-19 compared to the situation before the outbreak. There was no difference seen in the practice time and practice evaluation factors in the occupational therapy department and in the practice time factor in the dental hygiene department before and after COVID. CONCLUSION: In clinical practice under the extremely constrained circumstances imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems that the emotional internal response is greater, and the satisfaction with clinical practice appears to be relatively higher than before the outbreak.
The purpose of this study was to develop methods for foodservice employees to perform by measuring their levels of sanitation and hygiene practices. The employees' sanitation and hygiene competency list for school foodservice was developed on the basis of the job standardization. The competency list was divided into three parts; (1) before starting the work, (2) during the work and (3) after the work. The levels of the employees' sanitation and hygiene practices were evaluated by dietitians and by the employees themselves. Most schools had conventional foodservice systems (83.4%), which were operated by contract management (94.8%). It was found that the highest practice level related to sanitation and hygiene before starting work, with the lowest levels observed after work. The item related to the cleaning and sanitizing of dishes had the lowest practice level score. Employees perceived their sanitation and hygiene practice after work to be worse than before starting and during work. The items of ″Clean and sanitize all large stationary equipment after every use, and record equipment monitoring chart″ and ″Do not clean dishes and utensils in production area″ had the lowest scores by employees. The scores of the employees were similar to the perception of the dietitians.
The aim of this study was to investigate the level of dental infection control experienced by dental hygiene students in clinical practice institutions to identify problems and improve infection control in dental institutions. This study conducted online surveys targeting 269 dental hygiene students from universities that conducted clinical practice to determine the students' level of awareness regarding dental infection control in dental institutions and the reality of infection control in dental institutions. The results showed that dental hygiene students recognized the need for infection control and education about infection control at a high level. However, only 47% of the students were accurately informed about COVID-19. Basic instruments, periodontal instruments, and implant surgical instruments were sterilized after use for each patient, mostly by the institution, but 3-way syringe tips, preservation instruments and prosthetic instruments were more frequently reused without sterilization immediately after use. For dental infection control to be practiced at dental institutions, it is necessary to establish a systematic and safe infection control system, including infection control education, designation of infection managers, and provision of infection control guidelines.
The purpose of this study was to help improve the quality of education to keep up with fast-changing environments in educating sector. Relevant literature and data were reviewed, and the subjects in this study were dental hygiene juniors at seven two-year colleges in the Seoul metropolitan area and other regions, on whom a survey was conducted for about three months from August through October, 2004, to assess their satisfaction level with their major and educational environments. And it's concluded that in order to attract more new students and foster qualified students, dental hygiene practice labs should be improved on a large scale, and that there should be a great deal of investment in teaching facilities. The major findings of the study were as follows: 1. As for satisfaction with major choice, 57.5% of the students investigated, the largest percentage, expressed satisfaction with their major. 27.8%, the second largest group, found their choice not to be bad. 2. Regarding satisfaction with the state of practice labs, 41.9% were pleased with practice labs. This rate was quite lower than that of nursing students, as 64.2% of nursing students were pleased with their practice labs.7) 3. As to satisfaction with individual practice labs, oral prophylaxis labs were considered most satisfactory, as 53.9% were satisfied with them. Digital radiation labs appeared to be satisfactory the least, which made 77.0% dissatisfied. 4. Whether there were any connections between their working experience as a clinical worker and satisfaction level was investigated. In terms of their satisfaction with major choice and the state of practice labs, the students who had ever worked as a clinical worker were relatively pleased with the state of practice labs. As for satisfaction with each practice lab, those who had ever served as a clinical worker before being admitted into college expressed more satisfaction with radiation practice labs(p<0.05) and digital radiation labs(p<.05) than the others who hadn't. The gap between the two was statistically significant. 5. In regard to the causes of dissatisfaction with practice labs, 93.7 and 80.0% were respectively dissatisfied with digital radiation labs and basic dental hygiene labs because their colleges were devoid of those labs. 51.6%, the largest group, found oral prophylaxis labs unsatisfactory because of their frequent breakdown. In the event of most of the other practice labs, the greatest percentage were discontented due to a shortage of equipment.
Background: This study aimed to examine the factors that influence clinical performance of dental hygiene students to provide useful data for developing strategies to improve clinical competence. Methods: The effects of variables on clinical competence by quantile level were analyzed using quantile regression analysis in 247 dental hygiene students. Quantile regression and multiple regression analyses were conducted using the Stata 11.0 program to analyze predictors of clinical competence. Results: The clinical competence score of dental hygiene students was 42.69±5.90, the satisfaction of clinical practice was 49.90±7.44, the clinical practice stress was 50.62±7.37, and the professional self-concept was 31.68±4.41. Empathy was the highest at 50.87±4.93. Multiple regression analysis showed that school year, stress from clinical training, satisfaction with clinical training, professional self-concept, and empathy had significant impact on clinical competence. Quantile regression analysis showed that the effects varied depending on the clinical competence level. School year and professional self-concept had a significant positive effect, regardless of the clinical competence level, while empathy had a significant positive effect at the top 10% (Q90) of the clinical competence level. Satisfaction with clinical practice affected clinical competence at Q25, Q50, and Q90. Stress from clinical practice had significant effects at Q25, Q50, and Q90 (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to the study results, different factors affected clinical competence according to the quantile of clinical competence. This study provides valuable implications for designing clinical competence enhancement programs and strategies. In addition, objective indicators for considering factors that may affect the clinical competence, such as academic competence and satisfaction of practice hospitals, are expected to require detailed analysis and measures.
