  • This study aimed at verifying the effect of hydroxypropyl cellulose(HPC) treatment on polyethylene glycol(PEG)-treated waterlogged wood for surface stabilizing. This research investigated macroscopic and microscopic appearance, color change, weight change, and dimensional change. And effect of HPC was verified through variance analysis (ANOVA) and least significant difference test(LSD). HPC formed thin layer on the surface of wood specimen, and blocked the pore of tracheid and the gap between the crack. Specimens without deterioration showed no invisible change except HPC 1,000,000 treatment group. Whitening was appeared at the sound surface of HPC 1,000,000 treated wood. Specimens with deterioration showed a little color difference change by external moisture adsorption. Thin layer of HPC on the surface of wood specimen was maintained after the deterioration, and this HPC layer significantly suppressed the weight and dimensional change by moisture adsorption.

  • To synthesize ZnO colloidal solution by a sol-gel process, zinc acetate ($C_{4}H_{6}O_{4}Zn{\cdot}2H_{2}O{\cdot}0.2\;mol$) and lithium hydroxide ($LiOH{\cdot}H_{2}O{\cdot}0.14\;mol$) in the ethanol were added to the solution containing a dispersing agent, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC). The nanosize and physical shape of the synthesized ZnO particles were determined by HPC acting as the dispersing agent. Nanosized ZnO particles were also obtained by a precipitation method based on zinc-2-ethylhexagonate. The precipitates were characterized by DLS, XRD, FE-SEM, and UV-vis. As the results, the ZnO colloids tend to self-assemble into a well-ordered hexagonal close-packed structure. The ZnO nanoparticles have an average diameter of nearly 40 nm with a narrow size distribution.

  • Multilayer edible coatings was applied to lemon with beeswax-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (BW-HPMC), soybean oil-carboxymethyl cellulose (SBO-CMC), and carnaubawax-shellac-locust bean gum (CW-SL-LBG), respectively. The multilayer was composed of two layers of the same material, but the outer layer only contained vitamins C and E as antioxidants. Coating amounts built on lemon peel were measured to be large in the order of CW-SLLBG> BW-HPMC> SBO-CMC. The coated lemons were stored at 30${^{\circ}C}$ for 12 days. CW-SL-LBG showed the least change during the storage in weight loss, rotten rate, firmness, and browning. Whereas SBO-CMC had the least change in pH, soluble solid amount, and titratable acidity. In a sensory test, CW-SL-LBG was evaluated to be the best in the attributes such as spoilage, glossiness, color, firmness, and flavor. Overall CW-SL-LBG was judged to be the best for multilayerd coating with vitamin C and E on lemon.

  • Percutaneous delivery of NSAIDs has advantages of avoiding hepatic first pass effect and delivering the drug for extended period of time at a sustained, concentrated level at the inflammation site that mainly acts at the joint and the related regions. To develop the new topical formulations of pranoprofen that have suitable bioadhesion, the gel was formulated using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and poloxamer 407. The effects of temperature on drug release was performed at $32^{\circ}C$, $37^{\circ}C$ and $42^{\circ}C$ according to drug concentration of 0.04%, 0.08%, 0.12%, 0.16%, and 0.2% (w/w) using synthetic cellulose membrane at $37{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$. The increase of temperature showed the increased drug release. The activation energy (Ea), which were calculated from the slope of lop P versus 1000/T plots was 11.22 kcal/ mol for 0.04%, 10.79 kcal/mol for 0.08%, 10.41 kcal/mol for 0.12% and 8.88 kcal/mol for 0.16% loading dose from the pranoprofen gel. To increase the drug permeation, some kinds of penetration enhancers such as the ethylene glycols, the propylene glycols, the glycerides, the non-ionic surfactants and the fatty acids were incorporated in the gel formulation. Among the various enhancers used, propylene glycol mono laurate showed the highest enhancing effects with the enhancement factor of 2.74. The results of this study suggest that development of topical gel formulation of pranoprofen containing an enhancer is feasible.

  • Three kinds of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) derivatives, [6-{4-(4-cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}]hexyloxypropyl celluloses (CAHPCs) with degree of etherification (DET) ranging from 0.4 to 3, fully substituted acrylic acid esters of HPC (HPCA) and CAHPCs (CAHPCAs) were synthesized. The crosslinked HPCA (HPCAG) and CAHPCAs (CAHPCAGs) were also prepared by exposing thermotropic mesophases of HPCA and CAHPCAs to UV light. Both CAHPCs and CAHPCAs with DET ${\leq}$ 1.2, as well as HPC and HPCA, formed enantiotropic cholesteric phases whose optical pitches(${\lambda}_m$'s) increase with temperature, wheras both CAHPCs and CAHPCAs with DET ${\geq}$ 1.4 showed monotropic nematic phases. CAHPCAGs with DET ${\leq}$ 1.2, as well as CAHPCAs with DET ${\leq}$ 1.2, exhibited reflection colors in a wide temperature range. On the other hand, CAHPCAGs with DET ${\geq}$ 1.4, as well as CAHPCAs with DET ${\geq}$ 1.4, showed Schileren textures typical of nematic phase, indicating that the liquid crystalline structure is virtually locked upon photocrosslinking. The isotropization temperatures($T_i$'s) of both CAHPCAs and CAHPCAGs decreased with increasing DET. The $T_i$ of CAHPCAG, however, was higher than that of CAHPCA at the same DET. Moreover, the temperature dependence of ${\lambda}_m$ of CAHPCAGs was much weaker than that of CAHPCAs.

  • The effect of solubility and hygroscopicity of some tablet diluents on the disintegration of enzyme tablets was investigated. Tablets were prepared by direct compression method using sodium starch glycolate, crospovidone, croscarmellose sodium and low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose as super disintegrants. Lactose, dextrose, sucrose, sorbitol and calcium phosphate dibasic were selected as typical diluents in this study. They were different in solubility (sucrose, sorbitol>dextrose>dextrose>lactose>calcium phosphate dibasic) and hygroscopicity (sorbitol>sucrose>dextrose>caicium phosphate dibasic, lactose). The disintegrants accelerated differently the disintegration of the tablets prepared with different diluents in the decreasing order of calcium phosphate dibasic>lactose>dextrose>sucrose and sorbitol. These results indicate highly soluble and/or hygroscopic diluents decrease the efficiencies of super disintegrants in the enzyme tablets.

  • Basic investigation for the flexural strength and water stability of hardened cement pastes using ordinary portland cement with water-soluble polyer (hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose ; HPMC) was carried out with 0.2 of water cement ratio. For molding of the specimen, the paste was mixed by twin roll mill. According to increase in the content of HPMC, the setting time of cement paste was delayed and the flexural strength was increased. The maximum flexural strength of hardened cement paste with 5.0wt% of HPMC was about 330 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The expansion of the hardened cement paste immersed in water was increased with the content of water soluble polymer(HPMC). Consequently, the strength and the water stability of the hardened cement pastes were remarkably reduced by the expansion of them.

  • Investigation for the preparation of high strength hardened cement paste using ordinary portland cement, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) with admixtures was carried out. For molding of the specimen, the paste was mixed with 0.1 of water cement ratio by twin roll mill. The maximum flexural strength of dried hardened cement paste was about 600∼700kg/㎠. When the SiC was added to the paste, the dry flexural strength was about 920kg/㎠ and the young's modulus was 5.2×105kg/㎠. When the admixtures were added to the specimens, wet strength of the harened cement paste immersed in water was showed around 50∼100kg/㎠ higher than that of plain specimen. Consequently it is recognized the water stability of hardened cement paste was remarkably improved by adequate admixture.
