  • In order to improve a trip pattern in Mt. Halla climbing only to a summit, two trip programs with nature interpretation have been developed using the geomorphic characteristics of Mt. Halla which are distinct from those of mountains in the Korean peninsula. It also aims to help conservation of natural environment of Mt. Halla and to enhance the visitor satisfaction in Mt. Halla. The subalpine trip program is carried out on a 1.5 km-long trail between Wissaeoreum Hut and Janggumokoreum. Program participants are able to learn expertise about, and understand vulnerability of, a subalpine ecosystem, Consequently, the program can obtain an educational attainment getting them to recognize the necessity of preserving the subalpine zone of Mt. Halla as an important natural resource. The mountain river trip program is performed on a 1.5 km-long reach of Byeongmun River between Gwaneumsa trailhead and a gorge upstream of Gurin Cave. The program is capable of exhibiting effectively the river characteristics of Jeju Island using the geomorphic and hydrologic properties of Byeongmun River which differ from those of rivers in the Korean peninsula. Since the subalpine grassland and ephemeral stream of Mt. Halla are the visiting places which are rarely experienced in the Korean peninsula, the program participants can understand the regionality of Jeju Island as well as Mt. Halla through trip activities.

  • In this study, the changes of the streamflow characteristics of the watershed were analysed depending on the infiltration methods of CAT. The study area, Boryeong-dam watershed located in Chungcheongnam-do area, has been suffered from severe drought in recent years and stabilized regarding on the storage rate through efforts such as constructing a channel connecting the upstream of Boryeong-dam from the downstream of the Geum river. In this study, the effects of soil infiltration parameters on the watershed streamflow characteristics were analyzed by the infiltration methods of CAT such as Rainfall Excess, Green&Ampt and Horton. And the parameter calibrations were conducted by SCEUA-P, a global optimization technique module of the PEST, the package for parameter optimization and uncertainty analysis, to compare the yearly variations of soil parameters for infiltration methods of CAT. In addition, the streamflow characteristics were analyzed for three infiltration methods by applying three different scenarios, such as applying calibrated parameters for every years to simulate the model for each years, applying calibrated parameters for the entire period to simulate the model for entire period, and applying the average value of yearly calibrated parameters to simulate the model for entire period.

  • This study was to investigate phytoplankton communities and to evaluate the effects of hydrological and physical-chemical environmental factors in major five dam reservoirs in the Han River water system. Annual average of chlorophyll a concentration in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam was higher than that of Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong. The opposite seasonal variation patterns of phytoplankton growth were observed in dam reservoirs; the highest biomass in spring of dry season in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong which are the river-type reservoirs and Lake Doam where turbidity was high throughout the year, and in summer and autumn of rainy season in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which are the lake-type reservoirs, indicating that the seasonal pattern for growth of phytoplankton in on-river reservoirs is mainly determined by hydrologic characteristics. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam, where the concentration of nutrients was relatively high, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima in Lake Paldang and Lake Cyeongpyeong and Nitzschia spp. in Lake Doam throughout all season. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which showed the oligo-mesotrophic state, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Cyclotella pseudostelligera in spring and winter, but Cyanophyceae such as Microcystis spp. in summer.

  • A local rain that is concentrated in specific area in a short time frequently occurs due to recent abnormal weather. To prevent potential flood disasters, therefore, it is necessary to be established to the flood control system. Checking the river design standard, however, hydrologic design frequency of water gate is only marked as over 20 years, so this fact shows that the standard is unclear. The inland inundation modeling considering the stage in a river and quantitative assessment are required to reduce flood damage. The simulation for internal inundation is very complex and is time-consuming due to considering hydraulic hydrology characteristics at the same time. Using the already established river master plan, consequently, this study proposed the simple and convenient method for assessment of the internal inundation simulation. Using the proposed method in the upper and middle regions of a river, influences for design frequency or water gate location were assessed by applying the nine probability precipitation with design frequency and by targeting the water gates which are installed in five inlands.

  • In this study, a groundwater table fluctuation method is suggested to predict groundwater level by means of groundwater table fluctuation due to recharge and discharge under unsteady condition. This model analyzes groundwater variation characteristics by using reaction factor related with groundwater flow and specific yield related with recharge. For the test of this model, measured groundwater level at JD Yongdam 1 and JW Konghang for 5 years (2006-2010) were used. At JD Yongdam 1, the estimated specific yield was 0.023, and the estimated reaction factor was 0.039. At JW Konghang, the estimated specific yield was 0.009 and the estimated reaction factor was 0.028, respectively. This model can estimate recharge and saturated parameters, thus it is expected that this model would be the proper tool for checking the parameter of hydrologic model and percolation features.

  • GIS technique was applied for ffie work of water supply protection, and GIS rnaps were produced by this technique in Cheong-ju area. They are actual runoff rnap and regional groundwater protection map. The digital database was estabilished for creation of these maps in EGIS(Environmental Geologic information system). A lot of environmental, hydrological and geotedmical data relating to the area were collected from various sources, and used along with the results of the field investigation and laboratorv works in the interpretation of environmental geologic characteristics of the area. These special maps can be applied in the establishment of water supply protection and regional land use planning. For instant, the actaal runoff rnap is very linportant for hydrologic study, and groundwater protection map for susceptibility to groundwater contamination in the area. Actual runoff of the study area was calculated about 148mm using the method of SCS(Soil Consrevation Service) in GIS. The GIS technique was effective in watershed analysis and water balance study.

  • This study aims at the introduction of new catchment shape descriptor, developed by Moussa(2003), based on equivalent ellipse and the assessment of its hydrologic applicability. Two descriptors a+b and a+b+${\varepsilon}OM$were correlated to the lag time and those were applied to the estimation of representative values of Nash model parameters. They are applied in order to examine the practicality to 3 catchments in Korea, catchments in Korea, respectively, i.e. Pyeongchanggang catchment in Han river, Bocheongcheon catchment in Geum river and Wicheon catchment in Nakdong river. As a result both of two descriptors show higher correlations to the lag lime than classical geomorphologic factors and hereby Moussa's suggestion(2003) is confirmed. For the sake of simplicity the former is recommended. Also representative IUHs derived from this study show consistent basin response characteristics. It is desirable to conduct further more case studies on many other basins.

  • For the establishment of effective water resources management platform for Jeju-Island, the characteristics, including surface runoff, evapotranspiration, groundwater recharge and discharge are to be properly quantified. Among these hydrologic components, interception due to vegetation is very important factor but it is hard to be quantified. After Von Hoyningen-Huene (1981) found the relationship between LAI (Leaf Area Index) and interception storage, LAI has been used for key factor to estimate interception and transpiration. In this study the equation suggested by Kozak et al. (2007) is implemented in SWAT-K (Soil and Water Assessment Tool - Korea) model and is tested at the Cheonmicheon watershed in Jeju-Island. The evaporation due to interception was estimated as 85~104mm, 8~11% of whole evaporation. Therefore it is necessary to consider the evaporation due to interception as a controlling factor to water budget of this watershed.

  • This paper presents a hydrologic method of probabilistic design flood calculation for ungauged small river basins. It is based on the study and analysis of the physiographic characteristics of the river basin for which stream flow records may not be available. Rainfall data is used at nearby station which has the rainfall intensity-duration-frequency relations. Musim cheon, second tributary of the Guem river, is selected for the sample study. Design floods for the stream reaches are computed by the Rational formula, the runoff coefficients being determined with the physiographic data such as soil type, land use and vepetal covers. Derived unit hydrograph at conneted main river basin is used to compute the peak flood discharge. Kajiyama formula and modified Kajiyama formula are used to calculated the most probable maximum flood discharge. The result of this study shows that synthesized unit hydrograph method is more accurate and applicable way to com pute design flood for ungauged small river basins.
