  • The objective of this study is to analyze the temporal pattern characteristic of short-duration rainfall defined as a rainfall durations of 6 hours or less by the Huff's 4th quartile distribution. To analyze the temporal pattern characteristic of short-duration rainfall, the rainfall data are classified by rainfall duration and rainfall type(Changma, Typhoon, Severe rain storm, Frontal storm) and change of rainfall segment. Also, the results of this study compared with result of research work of Korea Institute of Construction Technology(1989) and Ministry of Construction & Transportation(2000). The conclusions of this study are as follows; (1) Short-duration rainfall with duration of 6 hours or less is found to be most prevalent frist-quartile storms. (2) In the case of rainfall type, Changma and Severe rain storms and Frontal storm is found second-quartile storms, and Typhoon is found third-quartile storms. (3) In the result by change of sixth segment storms, the type of temporal pattern of rainfall is found to be most prevalent two sixth parts, (4) Comparative analysis of the results shows that shapes of the dimensionless cumulative curves and values are different from those of existing researches.

  • An understanding of temporal trends of stream flows can help in the river management and the water resources planning for natural circumstances and human communities. Changes in temperature, precipitation, flow, and land use (agriculture, flood prevention activities, reservoir operation, interbasin diversion, etc.) are all eventually reflected in the flow pattern of the river. An assumption that the stationarity of the hydrologic series implying time-invariant characteristics of the time series accepted in water structure designs can no longer be valid if the flow changes as a result of the climate change or the stream flow use. Therefore, the identification and description of the characteristics of changes in hydrologic time series is a very important task in the river basin management. In this study, the statistical tests on the flow change forced by excess water diversions in the Sumjin River basin were performed by ways of single variable and time series variable comparisons. The tests showed that currently the Sumjin River basin statistically keeps its homogeneity in annual streamflow series, but the changed situation has been appeared in dry season streamflow series.

  • These studies are aimed at the analysis of systematic variation pattern of water resources in Korean river catchments and the development of their simulation models from the stochastic analysis of monthly and annual hydrologic data as main elements of water resources, i.e. rainfall and streamflow. In the analysis, monthly & annual rainfall records in Soul, Taegu, Pusan and Kwangju and streamflow records at the main gauging stations in Han, Nakdong and Geum river were used. Firstly, the systematic variation pattern of annual streamflow was found by the exponential function relationship between their standard deviations and mean values of log-annual runoff. Secondly, stochastic characteristics of annual rainfall & streamflow series were studied by the correlogram Monte Carlo method and a single season model of 1st-order Markov type were applied and compared in the simulation of annual hydrologic series. In the simulation, single season model of Markov type showed better results than LN-model and the simulated data were fit well with historical data. But it was noticed that LN-model gave quite better results in the simulation of annual rainfall. Thirdly, stochastic characteristics of monthly rainfall & streamflow series were also studied by the correlogram and spectrum analysis, and then the Model-C, which was developed and applied for the synthesis of monthly perennial streamflow by lst author and is a Markov type model with transformed skewed random number, was used in the simulation of monthly hydrologic series. In the simulation, it was proved that Model-C was fit well for extended area in Korea and also applicable for menthly rainfall as well as monthly streamflow.

  • Estimation of design floods is typically required for hydrologic design purpose. Design floods are routinely estimated for water resources planning, safety and risk of the existing water-related structures. However, the hydrologic data, especially streamflow data for the design purposes in South Korea are still very limited, and additionally the length of streamflow data is relatively short compared to the rainfall data. Therefore, this study collected a large number design flood data and watershed characteristics (e.g. area, slope and altitude) from the national river database. We further explored to formulate a scaling approach for the estimation of design flood, which is a function of the watershed characteristics. Then, this study adopted a Hierarchical Bayesian model for evaluating both parameters and their uncertainties in the regionalization approach, which models the hydrologic response of ungauged basins using regression relationships between watershed structure and model. The proposed modeling framework was validated through ungauged watersheds. The proposed approach have better performance in terms of correlation coefficient than the existing approach which is solely based on area as a predictor. Moreover, the proposed approach can provide uncertainty associated with the model parameters to better characterize design floods at ungauged watersheds.

  • This paper presents an estimation method of small hydro power(SHP) potential using a SHP resource map. As a basic unit of SHP energy potential at a certain area, capacity and annual energy production of unit head was calculated from the catchment area given by a SHP resource map which was established by numerical hydrologic simulation so that a logical and relatively accurate potential estimation was possible comparing with the performance analysis model for SHP sites. The performance characteristics for Samok-Ri site were analyzed, using the SHP resource map and the developed model. It was found that the SHP resource map and the developed model is useful tool to estimate SHP potential.

  • A subwatershed within the Lake Juam was monitored to identify hydrologic and water quality characteristics. Rainfall record was collected and flow rate measurement and water quality sampling were conducted periodically at the watershed outlet. Water quality of storm period was worse than that of base flow period. Nutrient loading from the watershed was governed by only a few storms during study period. Nonpoint source pollution was identified major problem for water quality management in Juam Lake.

  • The purpose of this research is reconstruction of annual precipitation based on Tree-ring series at Seorak mountain and examine its effectiveness. To do so we performed nonlinear time series characteristics test of Tree-ring series and reconstructed annual precipitation of Gangneung from 1687 to 1911 using Artificial neural network and Nonlinear autoregressive exogeneous input (NARX) model which reflects stochastic properties. As a result, Tree-ring series at Seorak Mountain shows nonlinear time series property and reconstructed annual precipitation series drawn from NARX is similar in statistical characteristics of observed annual time series.

  • The objective of this paper is to study the discharge characteristics of pollutant loads in small watershed according to probability rainfall using the Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (WinHSPF). The subwatershed of Gosam reservoir watershed in Gyeonggido province was simulated and the probability rainfall of study area was estimated by recurrence interval and duration. The probability rainfalls are 156.5, 205.9 and 277.4 mm for 6 hrs, 12 hrs and 24 hrs in 10 year frequency, and each probability rainfalls is distributed by Huff's 4th quantiles method and applied to HSPF. The pollutant loads were high for initial rainfall. The concentrations of TN, TP and BOD were high as rainfall duration is shorter and rainfall intensity is higher.
