The hydrodynamic interaction characteristics between multiple floating bodies of semisubmersible type are examined to present the basic data for the design of huge offshore structures supported by a large number of the floating bodies in multi-directional irregular waves. The numerical approach is based on a combination of a three-dimensional source distribution method, the wave interaction theory and the spectral analysis method. The effects of wave directionality on the wave exciting forces acting on multiple floating bodies in multi-directional irregular waves also have been pointed out.

A ship in waves is suffered from the various wave loads that comes from its motion throughout its life. Because these loads are dynamic, the analysis of a ship structure must be considered as the dynamic problem precisely. In the rationally-based design, the dynamic structural analysis is carried out using dynamic wave loads provided from the results of the ship motion calculation as a rigid body. This method is based on the linear theory assumed low wave height and small amplitude of motion. But at the rough sea condition, high wave height, compared with ship's depth, induce the large ship motion, so the ship section configuration under waterline is rapidly changed at each time. This results in a non-linear problem. Considering above situation in this paper, a strength analysis method is introduced for the hull girder among waves considering non-linear hydrodynamic forces. This paper evaluates the overall or primary level of the ship structural dynamic loading and dynamic response provided from the non-linear wave forces, and bottom flare impact forces by momentum slamming theory. For numerical calculation a ship is idealized as a hollow thin-walled box beam using thin walled beam theory and the finite element method is used. This method applied to a 40,000 ton double hull tanker and attention is paid to the influence of the response of the ship's speed, wave length and wave height compared with the linear strip theory.
The methods to determine the hydrodynamic coefficients for the fixed type artificial reefs which were constructed to control ecological system in coastal waters are compared and discussed by model test results. To calculate the wave forces, least square method show good agreement with the experimental results and more stability than maximum force component method or Fourier decomposition method. This modified least square method of weighting the square of measured force turned out to be the most feasible method for maximum force. Using the feasible method, hydrodynamic characteristics for artificial reefs on uniform slopes offshore and breaking zone were studied. They were properly related to Keulegan-Carpenter's number and found larger than previous results. Wave force coefficients for artificial reefs around breaking zone were distributed from 1.5 to 2.5, and the mean value was 2.0. Drag force components were more in evidence than inertia force in maximum force which is important parameter to evaluate stability for high-permeability structures. A formula for the calculation of the maximum force for artificial reefs design is proposed, using structural dimension, water particle velocity and Keulegan-Carpenter's number.

Structures floating in the ocean experience various kinds of external loads, among which wave load is considered as determining factor in structural design. Its relative size compared with wavelength may be used to classify whether the structure is relatively small or large. Traditionally, the small structures are assumed to have little diffraction and the wave loads on large structure are usually calculated by only considering inertia force according to diffraction. In this paper, rectangular floating structures usually used in the ocean, river, and lake are used to find the relationship between hydrodynamic forces and its structural response.

Herein the motion of a freely-floating sphere in a water of finite depth is analysed within the framework of a linear potential theory. A velocity potential describing fluid motion is generated by distributing pulsating sources and dipoles on the immersed surface of the sphere, without introducing an inner flow model. The potential becomes the solution of an integral equation of Fredholm's second type. In the light of the vertical axisymmetry of the flow, surface integrals reduce to line integrals, which are approximated by summation of the products of the integrand and the length of segments along the contour. Following this computational scheme the diffraction potential and the radiation potential are determined from the same algorithm of solving a set of simultaneous linear equations. Upon knowing values of the potentials hydrodynamic forces such as added mass, hydrodynamic damping and wave exciting forces are evaluated by the integrating pressure over the immersed surface of the sphere. It is found in the case of finite water depth that the hydrodynamic forces are much different from the corresponding ones in deep water. Accordingly motion response of the sphere in a water of finite depth displays a particular behavior both in a amplitude and phase.

Numerical analysis of hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was carried out as an eco-friendly marine structure for coastal and harbor protection. Using boundary elements method with two-dimensional frequency-domain reflection and transmission coefficients and wave forces acting on the submerged flat plate were calculated with various submerged depths and respective motion allowable modes. The movable breakwater was found to be more efficient in wave-blocking than the fixed structure. Variation of reflection coefficients was significantly influenced by vertical motion of the body.
In this paper, the wave-induced motion characteristics of a floating pendulor are investigated numerically. A floating pendulor is a movable-body-type wave energy converter. This device consists of three main parts (floater, pendulum, and damping plates). In order to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients and wave exciting forces acting on floating bodies, a higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM) using a wave Green function is applied to the present problems. The hinged motion of a pendulum is simulated by applying the penalty method. In order to obtain a more realistic motion response for a pendulor, numerical body damping is included. First, the wave force and motion characteristics of just a floater are observed with respect to different shape parameters. Then, a coupled analysis of a floater, pendulum, and damping plates is carried out. The relative pitch velocity and wave forces acting on the floating pendulor are compared with those of a fixed pendulor.
For the purposes of drilling oil field and extracting oil deep water in more rough weather, the size of drilling rigs must be estimated. In this paper, the three dimensional source distribution method is used and we assume 10 deg. heeling and trimming condition of the drilling rig(SR-192). Also, the effects of the hydrodynamic forces which include the drift forces for field method, and the motion responses are studied with changing the incident wave direction in the assumed inclining condition. The theory and numerical codes used in this thesis appeared to be very useful for the preliminary design of drilling rigs.
The platform and floating structure of spar type offshore wind turbine systems should be designed in order for the 6-DOF motions to be minimized, considering diverse loading environments such as the ocean wave, wind, and current conditions. The objective of this study is to optimally design the platform and substructure of a 3MW spar type wind turbine system with the maximum postural stability in 6-DOF motions as well as the minimum material cost. Therefore, design variables of the platform and substructure were first determined and then optimized by a hydrodynamic analysis. For the hydrodynamic analysis, the body weight of the system was considered, and the ocean wave conditions were quantified to the wave forces using the Morison's equation. Moreover, the minimal number of computation analysis models was generated by the Design of Experiments (DOE), and the design variables of the platform and substructure were finally optimized by using a genetic algorithm with a neural network approximation.
Concepts of submerged floating tunnels (SFTs) for land connection have been continuously suggested and developed by several researchers and institutes. To maintain their predefined positions under various dynamic environmental loading conditions, the submerged floating tunnels should be effectively moored by reasonable mooring systems. With rational mooring systems, the design of SFTs should be confirmed to satisfy the structural safety, fatigue, and operability design criteria related to tunnel motion, internal forces, structural stresses, and the fatigue life of the main structural members. This paper presents a feasibility study of a submerged floating tunnel moored by an inclined tendon system. The basic structural concept was developed based on the concept of conventional cable-stayed bridges to minimize the seabed excavation, penetration, and anchoring work by applying tower-inclined tendon systems instead of conventional tendons with individual seabed anchors. To evaluate the structural performance of the new type of SFT, a hydrodynamic analysis was performed in the time domain using the commercial nonlinear finite element code ABAQUS-AQUA. For the main dynamic environmental loading condition, an irregular wave load was examined. A JONSWAP wave spectrum was used to generate a time-series wave-induced hydrodynamic load considering the specific significant wave height and peak period for predetermined wave conditions. By performing a time-domain hydrodynamic analysis on the submerged floating structure under irregular waves, the motional characteristics, structural stresses, and fatigue damage of the floating tunnel and mooring members were analyzed to evaluate the structural safety and fatigue performance. According to the analytical study, the suggested conceptual model for SFTs shows very good hydrodynamic structural performance. It can be concluded that the concept can be considered as a reasonable structural type of SFT.
