The sub-surface stress field beneath the spur gear's contact surface in lubricated condition has been analysed. The surface pressure was obtained by the elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication analysis using the accurate geometric clearances around the contact region of the teeth. The sub-surface stress field was calculated by using the Love's rectangular patch solution. The analysis results show that the sub-surface stress distribution is quite dependent on the surface pressure distribution. The pattern of sub-surface stress field is similar to that of the external load. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.
In this paper, the hydrodynamic pressure and minimum oil film thickness of a pin bush bearing for a connecting rod have been analyzed as functions of the number of oil grooves and an arc length of oil grooves. The lubrication characteristic of a pin bush is governed by oil groove design factors, which are considered in this study. The most influential design parameter is a number of oil grooves, which is three oil grooves with an arc length of oil groove, 1/6($60^{\circ}$). This means that oil groove with a long arc length of a pin bush does not contribute to the hydrodynamic pressure development. Thus the optimal design of a pin bush is necessary with an increased number of oil grooves and a reduced arc length.
In this research, effects of profile changes of stem section of the plunger on the lubrication characteristics of a fuel injection pump (FIP) were evaluated by hydrodynamic lubrication analysis. The clearance between plunger and barrel was divided into two regions, head and stem. The head was not involved in preventing a decrease of fuel oil pressure. So, research efforts were focused on both edges of the plunger’s stem. The two -dimensional Reynolds equation was used to evaluate lubrication characteristics with variations in viscosity, clearance and profile for a laminar, incompressible, unsteady-state flow. Moreover, the equilibrium equation of moment and forces in the vertical and horizontal directions were used to determine the motion of the plunger. The equations were discretized using the finite difference method. Lubrication characteristics of the FIP were investigated by comparing the dimensionless minimum film thickness, or film parameter, which is the ratio of minimum film thickness to surface roughness. Through numerical analyses, we showed that the profile of the lower edge of the stem had no effect on lubrication characteristics, but the profile of the upper edge had a significant influence on lubrication characteristics. In addition, changes in the profile were more effective in improving lubrication characteristics under low viscosity conditions.

Results of theoretical investigations on acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are presented. Nonlinear analysis of rotor bearing system including rotor imbalance is performed in order to obtain acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings. Furthermore, a cavitation algorithm, implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition, is adopted to predict cavitation regions in a fluid film. Acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are identified through frequency analysis of pressure fluctuation calculated from the nonlinear transient analysis. The results show that the acoustical frequency spectra of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are pure tone spectra, containing the frequency of the shaft rotation and its super-harmonics. The analysis also shows that the super-harmonics are predominant at neighborhood of the fluid film reformation and rupture regions.
To product multi-grade oil like engine oil, a sort of mineral base oil is mixed with a fundamental additive liquid package and a polymer liquid as viscosity index improver in order to improve the lubricating property of oil. That is, engine oil is the mixture of more than two fluids. In this paper, it will be systematically organized the governing equation describing non-Newtonian thermo-hydrodynamic lubrication related with the mixture of incompressible fluids based on the principle of continuum mechanics. Then, in order to find how the thermal analysis effect on the bearing performance lubricated with the mixture of multi-fluids, it will be compared to the performances between the mixture of each liquid to be blended and multi-grade engine oil as a single fluid in a high speed journal bearing. It is found that, in the case of lower viscosity oil, the difference of pressure distribution between the above two cases turns out to be existed, even if the load capacity is same level.
It is currently well known that surface textures act as lubricant reservoirs, entrap wear debris, and hydrodynamic bearings, which can lead to certain increases in load-carrying capacities. Until recently, the vast majority of research has focused on parallel sliding machine components such as thrust bearings, mechanical face seals, piston rings, etc. However, most sliding bearings have a convergent film shape in the sliding direction and their hydrodynamic pressure is mainly generated by the wedge action. Following the first part of the present study that investigates the effect of groove position on the lubrication performances of inclined slider bearings, this paper focuses on the effects of groove depths and film thicknesses. Using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT, the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations are numerically analyzed. The results show that the film thickness and groove depth have a significant influence on the pressure distribution. The maximum pressure occurs at the groove depth where the vortex is found and, as the depth increases, the pressure decreases. There is also a groove depth to maximize the supporting load with the film thickness. The friction force acting on the slider decreases with deeper grooves. Therefore, properly designed groove depths, depending on the operating conditions, can improve the load-carrying capacity of inclined slider bearings as compared to the bearings without a groove.
The aim of this study is to find the change in trend in the eccentricities of two journal bearings supporting the crankshaft of a single cylinder engine and the degree of misalignment of the shaft. We analyze the change in oil film thickness considering the wear scar under mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime at potential wear regions. For this, we first calculate the central eccentricities of the two journal bearings by using the mobility method. Then we calculate the outer end eccentricity by using the geometry of the bearings. Further, the tilting angle and degree of misalignment of the shaft are calculated by using the eccentricities of the two bearings. We show that the eccentricity of bearing #1, on which higher load is applied, increases at the beginning of the start-up cycle and during the coast-down cycle. However, the eccentricity of bearing #2, on which lower load is applied, decreases at the beginning of the start-up cycle and increases during the coast-down cycle. From the results of the analysis of oil film thickness, we show that the mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime for a misaligned shaft is at the initial stages of the start-up cycle for both bearing #1 and #2 and at the final stage of the coast-down cycle for only bearing #1.

The real area of contacts, average film thickness, mean real pressure, and mean hydrodynamic pressure are investigated numerically in this study, especially for the parallel thrust bearing. Model surface is generated numerically with given autocorrelation function and some surface profile parameters. Then the average Reynolds equation contained flow factors and contact factor is applied to predict the effects of surface roughness in mixed lubrication regimes. In this equation, flow factors are defined as correction terms to smooth out high frequency surface roughness and contact factor is introduced to relieve from obtaining the average film thickness. Therefore the computation time to obtain h can be reduced.

Air entrainment of a winding roll with a nip roller was studied numerically. The amount of air entrainment between two rotating rollers was obtained by solving lubrication equation, Reynolds equation, which neglect the existence of a web. However, the numerical model of this study included the web existence, therefore it considered the two lubricating air films between a winding roll and a web and also between a nip roller and the web. The pressure profiles and gap profiles of the two films were obtained by solving lubrication equation for the two air films and force balance equation of the web. Ballooning phenomenon was examined in terms of nip force, wrap angle, web stiffness, web speed, and web tension. This ballooning phenomenon caused by the back flow of the air film blocked by the nip roller. Air entrainment of the two numerical models was compared.
This paper reports on the mixed lubrication characteristics between the cam and the tappet contact surface of direct acting type valve train systems. First, the dynamic characteristics are solved by using the lumped mass method to determine the load conditions at the contact point. Then, the minimum oil film thickness is calculated with consideration of elastohydrodynamic line contact theory and the friction force is obtained by using the mixed lubrication model which separates the hydrodynamic and the boundary friction. Finally, the average surface temperatures are calculated by using the flash temperature theory. The results show that, there are some peaks in the friction force due to the asperity contact friction, and flash temperature at the position of minimum oil film thickness. It is thought that there is a relationship between the surface temperature and cam surface wear, and therefore, the analysis on the worn cam profile has been performed.
