  • We present a high-order potential flow model for the motion of hydrodynamic unstable interfaces in cylindrical geometry. The asymptotic solutions of the bubbles in the gravity-induced instability and the shock-induced instability are obtained from the high-order model. We show that the model gives significant high-order corrections for the solution of the bubble.

  • This work concerns the investigation of a Q1D methodology employed to study pressure oscillations in solid rocket motors driven by hydrodynamic instabilities. A laboratory-scale solid motor designed to develop vortex-shedding phenomena is analyzed for the whole firing time. The comparison between numerical results and experimental data shows good agreement regarding pressure oscillations signature, especially in the flute-mode behavior, the typical oscillations frequency trend present in any motor liable to hydrodynamic instabilities. Such result ensures the model capability to cope with this particular kind of pressure oscillations source, allowing the investigation of the phenomenon with a lighter and cost savings methodology than CFD simulations.

  • To investigate cell formation in hydrocarbon/hydrogen/carbon monoxide-air premixed flames, the outward propagation and cellular instabilities were experimentally studied in a constant pressure combustion chamber at room temperature and elevated pressures. Unstretched laminar burning velocities and Markstein lengths of the mixtures were obtained by analyzing high-speed schlieren images. In this study, hydrodynamic and diffusional- thermal instabilities were evaluated to examine their effects on flame instabilities. The experimentally-measured unstretched laminar burning velocities were compared to numerical predictions using the PREMIX code. Effective Lewis numbers of premixed flames with methane addition decreased for all of the cases; meanwhile, effective Lewis numbers with propane addition increased for lean and stoichiometric conditions and increased for rich and stoichiometric cases for hydrogen-enriched flames. With the addition of propane, the propensity for cell formation significantly was diminished, whereas cellular instabilities for hydrogen-enriched flames were promoted. However, similar behavior of cellularity was obtained with the addition of methane to the reactant mixtures.

  • We summarize various aspects of the interaction of supernova remnants (SNRs) with the ambient medium. We discuss the evolution' of SNRs in environments sculpted by the progenitor star, and summarize the factors on which this evolution depends. As a specific example, we consider the evolution of the medium around a 35 M$\bigodot$ star, and the interaction of the shock wave with this medium when the star explodes as a SN. We also discuss the interaction of Type Ia SNe with the ambient medium, especially the formation and growth of hydrodynamic instabilities.

  • DNS is performed to examine the propagation characteristics of stagnating turbulent premixed flames. Results show good agreement with the recently proposed relationship for turbulent burning velocity, $S_T$. It is shown that $S_T$ increases through a thinner flamelet, turbulence production and correlation between fluctuating velocity and buoyancy force respectively for diffusive-thermal, hydrodynamic and Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The mean curvature doesn't have significant effect on $S_T$ at the leading edge.

  • We present preliminary numerical simulations of tilted-disk accretion around a rotating black hole. Our goal is to explore whether hydrodynamic instabilities near the Bardeen-Petterson radius could be responsible for generating moderate-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations in X-ray binaries. We review the relevant general relativistic hydrodynamic equations, and discuss preliminary results on the structure and dynamics of a thin, Keplerian disk.

  • In order to evaluate the potential of partial hydrocarbon substitution to improve the safety of hydrogen use in general and the performance of internal combustion engines in particular, the outward propagation and development of surface cellular instability of spark-ignited spherical premixed flames of mixtures of hydrogen, hydrocarbon, and air were experimentally studied at NTP (normal temperature and pressure) condition in a constant-pressure combustion chamber. With propane being the substituent, the laminar burning velocities, the Markstein lengths, and the propensity of cell formation were experimentally determined, while the laminar burning velocities and the associated flame thicknesses were computed using a recent kinetic mechanism. Results show substantial reduction of laminar burning velocities with propane substitution, and support the potential of propane as a suppressant of both diffusional-thermal and hydrodynamic cellular instabilities in hydrogen-air flames.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of added diluents (carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and helium) on cellular instabilities in outwardly propagating spherical syngas-air premixed flames. Laminar burning velocities and Markstein lengths were measured by analyzing high-speed schlieren images at various diluent concentrations and equivalence ratios. Experimental results showed substantial reduction of the laminar burning velocities and of the Markstein lengths with the diluent additions in the fuel blends. Effective Lewis numbers of helium-diluted syngas-air flames increased but those of carbon dioxide- and nitrogen-diluted syngas-air flames decreased in increase of diluents in the reactant mixtures. With helium diluent, the propensity for cells formation was significantly diminished, whereas the cellular instabilities for carbon dioxide- and nitrogen-diluted syngas-air flames were not suppressed.

  • The thermocapillary flow in a differentially heated cylindrical liquid bridge under steady rotation of the hot disk is considered in the limit of zero capillary number. Steady flow states and their three-dimensional stability are calculated numerically. A linear stability analysis reveals that the most dangerous perturbations are oscillatory with azimuthal wavenumber m=1 or m=2 depending on the parameters.

  • We showed that magnetic fields are generated in the plasma which have the temperature inhomogeneities. The mechanism is the same as the Weibel instability because the velocity distribution functions are at non-equilibrium and anisotropic under the temperature gradients. The growth timescale is much shorter than the dynamical time of structure formation. The coherence length of magnetic fields at the saturated time is much shorter than kpc scale and then, at nonlinear phase, become longer by inverse-cascade process. We report the application of our results to clusters of galaxies, not including hydrodynamic effects.
