  • In this paper, it is intended to study about deferences of design and operation properties between large and small hydro-power house's turbine which type is reaction. In generally, turbine of large hydro-power has a more safe and effective energy output mechanisms than small hydro-power's because the turbine of small hydro-power is more sensitive to hydraulic losses. But, it is more effective for the all energy market to improve the capability and efficiency of small hydro-power in the present status of increasing construction of small hydro-power than large hydro-power. Therefore, we intend to investigate and introduce the way to enhance the efficiencies of reaction turbine adopted to small hydro-power.

  • Small Hydro-Power (SHP) is an environmental friendly technology. Usually hydro power generation projects are viewed as constructing large dams and reservoirs but available new research and engineering techniques have helped hydro power generation without large dams and without large reservoirs. In India, there are several water installations, irrigation dams, canals, streams or running rivers not tapped to generate power. In these cases the existing system and facilities can help in generating power with less investment and time. This area is yet unexplored. Harnessing a stream for hydroelectric power is a major undertaking for the energy crises and the global issues to go green. In this technical note a potential site for mini hydro power plant nearby Shoolini University is identified and examined for the economic feasibility.

  • Renewable energy sources based on solar radiation, wind energy, geothermal energy, and biomass energy have now reached the level of industrial application. A new way to generate electricity using low-potential heat is to install a hydro-steam turbine. In hydro-steam turbines, hot water is supplied directly to turbine rotor nozzles without prior separation into steam and water in separators, which significantly increases the efficiency of hot water energy use. Such turbines are suggested to be used as autonomous energy sources in geothermal heating systems, heating water boilers and cooling systems of chemical reactors, metallurgical furnaces, etc. The authors conclude that the installation of hydro-steam turbines in heating plants and process boiler plants can also be effective if the used exhaust steam-water mixture at the turbine outlet is used to heat the network water or as return water.

  • Cooling seawater of thermal power plant which amounts about 5 cms per 100 MWe has hydro energy of about 3,000 kW at the thermal power plant complex, but this useful hydro energy has not been developed. Therefore, the feasibility study on hydro energy development of three power plants located in the southern and western coast of Korea was performed. Three target power plants are Samcheonpo, Boryeong and Hadong thermal power plant. The design head to discharge cooling water by gravity and the head caused by tidal level in the southwestern coastal area, could be used for the production of electric power. The various alternatives were studied and technical feasibility and economical efficiency were clearly proved.

  • Renewable and unutilized energy (biogas power generation, wind power, solar, small hydro-power, sewage heat source, etc.) seems to be suitable to install for the sewage treatment facilities. There are 357 sewage treatment plants in 2007. 17 plants among these have been operating for self-supporting energy by using solar power, small hydro-power and biogas in 2008. Newly built sewage treatment plant of 96,000 $m^3$/day for a newtown is expected to get up to energy consumption of 10 GWh/yr. If solar energy, small hydro-power and biogas-equipments were applied to the new treatment plant, self-supporting energy of the new sewage treatment plant will get up to 56.1%. As a results, about 2,379ton $CO_2$/yr $CO_2$ emission reduction can be expected by using renewable energy. These efforts for self-supporting energy will lead sewage treatment plant to new energy recycle center.

  • The propeller type hydro turbine model with vertical axis has been tested and analyzed. The blade angle of turbine model were designed to be varied according to the condition of head and flowrate. When the changes in head and output were comparatively large, the efficiency drop were small, so the efficiency characteristics and stability of the entire operating condition were maintained in good condition. These results showed that the developed model in this study will be suitable for small hydro power stations with large changes in head and load such as sewage treatment plants and agricultural reservoirs.

  • As smart grid techniques developed, public attention is concentrating on energy efficiency. So it is necessary to study on new renewable energy in order to manage the energy within micro grid consisting smart grid. Among them, small hydro energy has the advantage of being installable anywhere depending the amount of water used by the users within micro grid. This study examines if the measured value is appropriate for small hydro power generation by measuring generation quantity and operation rate of generator based on the sewage flow used by apartments and multi-unit dwellings where those users live. Some appropriate apartments and multi-unit dwellings generate electricity with small hydro generator using sewage as potential energy. This study intends to suggest more effective management by introducing energy management system and electricity storage device of micro grid.

  • Small hydro power, among other renewable energy resources, has been evaluated to have enough development value because it is a clean, renewable and abundant energy resource. In addition, small hydro power has the advantage of low cost development by using existing facilities like sewage treatment plants, water works and similar resources. But in the case of small hydro power systems, there are problems with degraded operation efficiency of turbine due to changes in flow rates. In order to overcome this, variable speed control can be achieved by using the power rectifier and permanent magnetic synchronous generator(PMSG) as a possible method to respond to the changes in flow rates. In this study, a commercial ANSYS CFD code was used to analyze the performance of 10kW class propeller hydro turbine and to also investigate flow characteristics at variable flow rates and runner vane.

  • Recently the need for renewable energy development is expanding due to the global climate change, the environmental issues and the limited fossil energy resources. Dependence of energy on overseas is high in Korea. To resolve the environmental problems and to improve the energy independence rate, the development of renewable energy is more required. The small hydro power, one of the renewable energy resources, has been developing and operating from a long time ago. If we are new developing a small hydro power with the use existing dams and reservoirs, we will design the length of inlet pipe and the diameter suitable for it. However, in case of using the existing water supply pipe which had been designed suitable for water service, the designer has to review and check that the pipe is suitable for operating a generator. In this paper, the design of small hydro power using the existing long pipe of water supply, we suggest the optimum way to reduce the water hammer in pipe which causes the unsteady flow during the load-shutdown of generator, the generator operation plan for the stable supply of water and the design factor of determining the generator capacity through the analysis between discharge and head-loss.

  • A high-efficiency underwater radiation monitoring system, HydroGamma, has been developed for detecting 137Cs and 131I in the event of waterborne radiation contamination. The system consists of a 3-inch NaI (Tl) detector, solar panels for power supply, data acquisition and transmission modules, and batteries. HydroGamma also includes a 40K calibration source for remote performance evaluation and energy calibration. In this study, some simulations and experiments were carried out to evaluate the minimum detectable activities (MDA) of HydroGamma. We installed the HydroGamma at Tapjeongho Lake in Nonsan-si and acquired background data since MDA is calculated based on the experimental background data. The results show that the minimum detectable activities for 137Cs and 131I were 1.78Bq L-1 and 1.81Bq L-1, respectively even though the gamma rays emitted from 40K(1,460 keV) affect the minimum detectable activities for them.
