The design of sand mat should be reviewed by the behaviour of excess pore pressure which is obtained by combining characteristics of soft ground with the permeability of sand mat. In this paper, in order to investigate the distribution of hydraulic gradient of sand mat, a banking model test was performed using dredged sand as materials of sand mat, and these results were compared by the numerical analysis results utilizing Terzaghi's consolidation equation. The results show that the pore pressure was influenced by the settlement increasing in the central area of sand mat as the height of embankment increases, and uprising speed of excess pore pressure due to residing water pressure is delayed compared with the results of numerical analysis. Finally, the construction of sand mat should be spreaded to reduce the increased hydraulic gradient at the central area of embankment.
The behaviour of an earth and rock-fill dam is complicated due to reservoir water and various materials in zoned dams. Different materials with a wide range of permeability and seasonal variation of reservoir water result in the time dependent post-constructional behaviour. In aged dams it is often required to control water level to keep the dams safe. In this case information on the post-constructional dam behaviour is important. However, present geotechnical knowledge does not fully support the occasion. In this study the post-constructional behaviour of a dam is investigated using coupled finite element models for series of idealized water reservoir cases: impoundment, draw down, seasonal fluctuation with different rising and falling speeds. Numerical results were analysed in respect of geotechnical parameters such as load transfer, hydraulic fracturing potential and stress paths. It is shown that the control of water level is an important factor while operating dams.

Behaviour of ultra-high pressure diesel spray in a constant-volume pressure chamber was studied with injection pressure ranging from 20 to 160㎫. Sprays were observed by the right angle scattering method. As a result, the spray tip penetration is first proportional to a time, and after that, it is proportional to 0.52 of the time during at the time of injection pressure and back pressure increase. An empirical correlation was made for the parameters of injection pressure, air-fuel density ratio, spray tip distance, spray angle, jet angle of spray and max. spray width.

Behaviour of ultra-high pressure diesel spray and its structure in a constant-volume pressure chamber were studied with injection pressure ranging from 35 to 110MPa. Sprays were observed by using the back illumination scattering method and righ angle scattering method. The spray process mechanism were investigated with both photographs. As a result, the spray angle and air entrainment angle was larger as injection pressure and back pressure increase. It becomes clear that mean air-fuel ratio is increased by increasing the injection pressure.

Dynamic models have been developed for the coal gasification process by using a modular approach method. The complete unit is divided, for the convenience of the analysis, into several sections, viz. the coal feeding system, the gasifier, the gas cooler, the valves, the pumps, etc. The dynamic behaviour of each section is described in mathematical terms and each term is modulized into several submodels consisting of the complete process. To represent the behaviour of the fluid flow, the hydraulic network is proposed. Results for the more important system variables are presented and discussed. There dynamic models enable process and control engineers to quickly review a wide range of alternative operating and control strategies and help operators to easily understand the process dynamics and eventually can be applied to the design of commercial scale IGCC plants.
As the flow velocity and Reynolds number increase in rockfill porous media, the flow deviates from Darcy conditions. In this study, the permeability tests of rock column specimen and laboratory gabion weir model were carried out to investigate a head loss behaviour of flow through rockfill deposition in small river artificial recharge. Through column test, the nonlinear relationships between flow velocity and hydraulic gradient and coefficients were determined and the correlation formula of hydraulic mean radius and coefficients was proposed. The flow velocities and discharges in voids estimated by proposed equations were well matched with the measured values of laboratory gabion weir model.

The failure of hydraulic turbine runners is a rare event. So in order to assess the reliability of these components one cannot rely solely on the number of observed failures in a given population. However, as there is a limited number of degradation mechanisms involved, it is possible to use physically-based reliability models. Such models are often more complicated but are able to account for physical parameters in the degradation process. They can therefore help provide solutions to improve reliability. With such models, the effect of materials properties on runner reliability can be highlighted. This paper presents a brief review of the Kitagawa-Takahashi diagram which links the damage tolerance approach, based on fracture mechanics, to the stress or strain-life approaches. Using simplified response spectra based on runner stress measurements, we will show how fatigue reliability is sensitive to materials fatigue properties, namely fatigue crack propagation behaviour and fatigue limit obtained on S-N curves. Furthermore, we will review the influence of the main microstructural features observed in 13%Cr-4%Ni stainless steels commonly used for runner manufacturing. The goal is ultimately to identify the most influential microstructural features and to quantify their effect on fatigue reliability of runners.

Compacted layers of sand-bentonite mixtures have been proposed and used in a variety of geotechnical projects as engineered barriers for the enhancement of impervious landfill liners, cores of zoned earth dams and radioactive waste repository systems. This paper presents a study on the valorization of local materiel such as dune sand from Laghouat region and mine bentonite intended for the realization of liner base layers in the conception of insulation barriers for hazardous waste centers. In the practice we try to get an economical mixture that satisfies the hydraulic and mechanical properties specified by regulation rules. The effect of the bentonite additions on the mixture is reflected by its capability of clogging the matrix pores upon swelling. In order to get an adequate dune sand-bentonite mixture, an investigation on hydraulic and mechanical behaviours is carried out in this study for different mixtures. Using oedometer test, the adequate bentonite addition to the mixture, which satisfies the conditions on permeability, is found to be around 12% to 15%. These results are also confirmed by direct measurement using triaxial cell.
In this study, laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests are carried out to evaluate the effects of the cleavage anisotropy of Pocheon granite. Breakdown pressure is smaller when cracks are generated to the direction of rift plane in constant pressurization rate condition because of higher microcracks density. Besides not only injection rate changes but also the amount of injection pressure for fracture initiation and crack expansion is detected while testing due to internal deformation. Pressurization rate is higher while hydraulic fracture testing with constant injection rate condition in case of the specimen which has rift plane perpendicular to borehole because there are much flow paths to penetrate compared to the specimen which has hardway plane perpendicular to borehole. Observation by X-ray CT scanning shows that almost all of cracks due to hydraulic fracturing are generated to the direction of plane which has higher microcrack density that is rift plane or grain plane.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of five different combinations including: sand 70%, bentonite 30% (S70B30)- sand 80%, bentonite 20% (S80B20)- sand 80%, organophilic 20% (S80M20)- sand 60%, bentonite 20%, organophilic 20% (S60B30M20) and sand 75% - bentonite 15% - organophilic 10% (S75B15M10) on landfill linear structure in order to decrease phenol leaching. Hydraulic conductivity and adsorption behavior of the samples were investigated. The results demonstrated that the lowest hydraulic conductivity coefficient ($1.16{\times}10^{-11}{\frac{m}{s}}$) was obtained for S70B30. Furthermore, adding more than 20% of bentonite had no significant effect on reducing permeability. Moreover, Freundlich isotherm was introduced as the best model explaining adsorption behaviour due to its highest determination coefficient (0.945). The best samples for adsorption capacity of phenol and for both permeability and adsorption are S80M20 and S60B30M20, respectively. Although the presence of bentonite was effective in reducing hydraulic conductivity, organic clay had no considerable impact on reducing permeability. Though, it's an exceptional role in adsorbing organic contaminants including phenol cannot be ignored. To meet all regulatory constraints, the optimal compound is made up of 10.2% of bentonite and 2.8% of organophilic clays with a minimized cost of 13.64 ($/ton).
