A kinematic and dynamic optimal design of a new parallel-type rolling mill based upon Stewart platform manipulator is investigated. To provide sufficient degrees-of-freedom in the rolling process and the structural stability of each stand, a parallel manipulator with six legs is considered. The objective of this new parallel-type rolling mill is to permit an integrated control of the strip thickness, strip shape, pair crossing angle, uniform wear of the rolls, and tension of the strip. By splitting the weighted Jacobian matrices Into two parts, the linear velocity, angular velocity, force, and moment transmissivities are analyzed. A manipulability measure, the ratio of the manipulability ellipsoid volume and the condition number of a split Jacobian matrix, is defined. Two kinematic parameters, the radius of the base and the angle between two neighboring Joints, are optimally designed by maximizing the global manipulability measure in the entire workspace. The maximum force needed in the hydraulic actuator is also calculated using the structure determined through the kinematic analysis and the Plucker coordinates. Simulation results are provided.

In this paper, we present some results on performance analysis for flap actuation system of aircraft. For this, by utilizing MATLAB/Simulink solution, which is widely used physical model-based design tool, we particularly construct the architecture of the analysis model consisting of the main three phases: 1)commanding and outer-controlling the flap angle through flight control computer; 2)generating hydraulic/mechanical power through control module and power drive unit; 3)transmitting torque and actuating the flap through torque tube and rotary geared actuators. For mimicking the motion of the actual flap, we apply each mechanical component, which is already being used in actual aircraft, to our performance analysis model so that it guarantees the congruency of the simulation results. That is, we reflect the actual specifications of flap hardware and software as parameters of the model. Finally, simulation results are presented to illustrate the model.
This paper presents a user programmable computational/control platform developed to conduct real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS). The architecture of this platform is based on the integration of a real-time controller and a field programmable gate array (FPGA).This not only enables the user to apply user-defined control laws to control the experimental substructures, but also provides ample computational resources to run the integration algorithm and analytical substructure state determination in real-time. In this platform the need for SCRAMNet as the communication device between real-time and servo-control workstations has been eliminated which was a critical component in several former RTHS platforms. The accuracy of the servo-hydraulic actuator displacement control, where the control tasks get executed on the FPGA was verified using single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and 2 degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) experimental substructures. Finally, the functionality of the proposed system as a robust and reliable RTHS platform for performance evaluation of structural systems was validated by conducting real-time hybrid simulation of a three story nonlinear structure with SDOF and 2DOF experimental substructures. Also, tracking indicators were employed to assess the accuracy of the results.

Numerous devices exist for reducing or eliminating seismic damage to structures. These include passive dampers, semi-active dampers, and active control devices. The performance of structural systems with these devices has often been evaluated using numerical simulations. Experiments on structural systems with these devices, particularly at large-scale, are lacking. This paper describes a real-time hybrid testing facility that has been developed at the Lehigh University NEES Equipment Site. The facility enables real-time large-scale experiments to be performed on structural systems with rate-dependent devices, thereby permitting a more complete evaluation of the seismic performance of the devices and their effectiveness in seismic hazard reduction. The hardware and integrated control architecture for hybrid testing developed at the facility are presented. An application involving the use of passive elastomeric dampers in a three story moment resisting frame subjected to earthquake ground motions is presented. The experiment focused on a test structure consisting of the damper and diagonal bracing, which was coupled to a nonlinear analytical model of the remaining part of the structure (i.e., the moment resisting frame). A tracking indictor is used to track the actuator ability to achieve the command displacement during a test, enabling the quality of the test results to be assessed. An extension of the testbed to the real-time hybrid testing of smart structures with semi-active dampers is described.
This paper presents a hybrid system combining lead rubber bearings and hydraulic actuators controlled by a μ-synthesis method for seismic response control of a cable-stayed bridge. A hybrid system could alleviate some of restrictions and limitations that exist when each system is acting alone because multiple control devices are operating. Therefore, the overall control performance of a hybrid system may be improved compared to each system, however the overall system robustness may be negatively impacted by active device in the hybrid system or active controller may cause instability due to small margins. Therefore, a f-synthesis method that guarantees the robust performance is considered to enhance the possibility of real applications of the control system. The control performances of the proposed control system are compared with those of passive, active, semiactive control systems and hybrid system controlled by LQG algorithm and an extensive robust analysis with respect to stiffness and mass matrices perturbation and time delay of actuator is performed. Numerical simulation results show that the control performance of the proposed control system is superior to that of the passive system and slightly better than that of the active and semiactive systems and two hybrid systems show similar control performances. Furthermore, the hybrid system controlled by a μ-synthesis method shows the good robustness without loss of control performances. Therefore, the proposed control system could effectively be used to seismically excited cable-stayed bridge which contains many uncertainties.
Flow rate is one of the important variables for precise motion control and detection of the faults and fluid loss in many hydraulic components and systems. But in many cases, it is not easy to measure it directly. The orifice area of a servo valve by which the fluid flows is one of key factors to monitor the flow rate. In this paper, we have constructed an estimation algorithm for the effective orifice area by using the model of a servo valve cylinder control system and Kalman filter algorithm. Without geometry information about the servo valve, it is shown that the effective orifice area can be estimated by using only displacement and pressure data corrupted with noise. And the effect of the biased sensor data and system parameter errors on the estimation results are discussed. The paper reveals that sensor calibration is important in accurate estimation and plausible parameter data such as oil bulk modulus and actuator volume are acceptable for the estimation without any error. The estimation algorithm can be used as an useful tool for detecting leakage, monitoring malfunction and/or degradation of the system performance.
This paper represents an investigation of the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control system using Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation(HiLS). Control logic is primarily developed and tested with a specially equipped test vehicle. Establishment of an efficient and low cost development tool is a very important issue, and test vehicle approach is costly and time consuming. HiLS method is useful in the investigation of driver assistance and active safety systems. The HiLS system consists of a stepper motor for throttle control, a hydraulic brake system with an electronic vacuum booster, an electronic controller unit, a data logging computer which are used to save vehicle states and signals of actuator through a CAN and a simulation computer using mathematical vehicle model. Adaptation of a CAN instead of RS-232 Serial Interface for communication is a trend in the automotive industry. Since this environment is the same as a test vehicle, a control logic verified in laboratory can be easily transferred to a test vehicle.
This paper presents a novel concept of cargo handling system adapted for a sea port subjected to severe time-varying tide. The proposed system can perform loading or unloading by using a sort of hydraulic elevator associated with real-time position control. In order to achieve a proof-of-concept, a small-sized laboratory model of the cargo handling system is designed and built. The model consists of three principal components container palette transfer (CPT) car, platform with lifting columns, and cargo ship. The platform activated by electro-rheological (ER) valve-cylinders is actively controlled to track the position of the cargo ship subjected to be varied due to the time-varying tide and wave motion. Following the derivation of the dynamic model for the platform and cargo ship motions, an appropriate control scheme is formulated and implemented. The location of the CPT car is sensed by a set of photoelectric switches and controlled via sequence controller. On the other hand, a sliding mode controller (SMC) is adopted as the position controller for the platform. Both simulated and measured control results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed cargo system.
